    So -- if I (as a user) adopt a self-issued card, do I have an option as to which sites/apps I use with it, or does each one have to adopt the MS cardspace model as well? And if so, how is that different (other than in implementation) than Passport or any other unique ID system?

    Self issued cards give you great flexibility in which sites you use it. Of course the site has to be set up to accept the token - CardSpace is one way of doing it. Of course it is all based on standards!
