ADC SoundBytes: July – September 2009

The ADC Team has three further SoundBytes scheduled over the coming months. Two are repeats of popular sessions by Morgan Skinner and Chris Barker, and the third is a new session delivered by Simon Ince.

The sessions are charged at the rate of 1 hour from your ADC contract, or 2 proactive hours from your Premier contract, if you haven’t yet got an ADC contract. For this price you may have up to 2 Live Meeting connections, and you are of course free to use these to broadcast to a room full of people in your office.

 

If you require further information on this subject after the event, you can of course engage with the ADC team as usual to setup a suitable session.

 

SoundByte	Instrumenting Your .NET Application (Morgan Skinner)

Abstract	Did you know that the System.Diagnostics namespace was revamped in .NET 2.0? Are you aware of the excellent tracing facilities that are available within the .NET framework? Do you know how to easily add performance counters into an application, and how to do this with the least amount of trouble? And do you know that there are tools available with the .NET framework that allow you to visualise and correlate an end to end trace over WCF? If not then this is the session for you. Morgan will show how the classes within the System.Diagnostics namespace can be used to instrument your application and how to implement method entry/exit logging with the minimum of code. This session will also be useful if you are using a third party logging framework as some of the principles described can be used however you expose logging data.

 

SoundByte	Optimising Silverlight Performance (Chris Barker)

Abstract	As applications and web sites become “richer” more functionality is hosted in the browser, in many cases within Silverlight applications. Although this provides a great User Experience, care should be taken that the responsiveness of the application is not compromised. This SoundByte is focused on ensuring that Silverlight applications perform well, maintaining the Rich User Experience. It requires reasonable knowledge of Silverlight and .NET programming.

 

SoundByte	Debugging and Tuning AJAX Applications (Simon Ince)
Date & Time	Friday 25th September 2009 from 11:00 – 12:00 UK Time

Abstract	As web applications demand richer content so the complexity and volume of client-side code increases. Pushing this processing to the browser means that end users can experience errors or performance degradation without the developer’s knowledge. This session looks at a set of tools and techniques that will help you understand and remediate performance or functional problems within your AJAX code. Examples will be in ASP.NET AJAX 3.5 SP1, jQuery, and C#.
