It is not so many years ago that the words Microsoft and security were seen as a contradiction in terms by many IT professionals. How times have changed. Initiated in 2002, the Microsoft Trustworthy Computing programme has been instrumental in putting security at the core of all of Microsoft’s software development and the Writing Secure Code book has become a ‘must read’ bible for all software developers.
One of the fundamental differences with Trustworthy Computing is that it looks beyond the software coding to address the broader security challenges of privacy, reliability and business process. As we have identified in previous blog entries on security it should always be the requirements of the business that drive the need for security and not security getting in the way of what the business needs to do.
Which brings me to the topic in the title of this entry. On January 22nd and 23rd 2008 Microsoft will hold a Security Summit at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) Main Building in Whitehall, London. This is the fifth successive year in which we have held this event in collaboration with the MoD. The agenda explores strategic developments in Microsoft technology for secure deployment by the MoD in both administrative and field operations and includes more ‘deep dive’ workshops on specific aspects of security and how Microsoft is addressing the challenges and ever-changing threats.
As with previous years, we do extend the invitation to attend the event beyond MoD personnel to key IT and Security professionals in local authorities, central government and criminal justice organisations. Invitations to attend are issued by the MoD and the closing date for nominations is November 16th.
If you, or an appropriate representative from your organisation, would like to attend the Microsoft Security Summit for the MOD on 22-23 January 2008 please send an email expressing your interest to: lrg@microsoft.com. I shall follow-up with you to qualify what information we need to submit your nomination to attend the event.
