Poll: “Bored” by the cloud? Here’s what you might be missing

Government Computing’s “How of the Cloud” site recently asked visitors an important question about public sector technology:

In 2012, 49% of ICT Decision Makers were excited about the public cloud. How do you feel today?

The results are intriguing:

That’s right – 31.9% of the 142 people responding to the poll say they’re bored by the cloud. Bored!

A few years ago, that sentiment would have been impossible – it seems like just yesterday that the cloud was an experimental concept, not a real technology option for public sector organisations. Today, the government takes a “cloud first” stance to technology acquisitions. In just a handful of years, the cloud went from science fiction to standard operating procedure. In a way, it’s a sign of progress that anyone, let alone more than 3 in 10 respondents could be “bored” by a technology that saves money, improves service delivery and improve productivity.

Of course, it might well be that some people are “bored” by the cloud, not because they’ve mastered it, but because they’re not totally familiar with all the ways the cloud can help. A few years ago the cloud was a back office tool, used to lower storage costs. Now it’s the technology that underpins almost every part of the office, not only changing the way we work, but creating new opportunities for organisations of all types.

The cloud computing space is constantly evolving and organisations now have more options than ever before. Whether you’re “bored” or “excited” by the cloud, you owe it to yourself to stay current with the latest tech trends.
