Integrating Lotus Sametime with SharePoint 2007
Online Presence is an important collaboration feature available in SharePoint 2007. Online presence enables individuals who have access to your site to see who is online and to send instant messages to them. Most Microsoft customers do it through the Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007. To know more you can read: Plan presence integration (Office SharePoint Server)
What if your company has IBM's Lotus Sametime as the corporate standard for real-time (synchronous) collaboration? Can you still have online presence? Yes. You can have online presence through IBM's Lotus Sametime server also. I did not know that this was possible, so sharing with everyone in case anyone needs it.
The Disclaimer
The technical information given here is from the IBM Lotus Sametime 8.0.2 Information Center. I have not tested the complete setup and am banking on the Big Blue for content accuracy :-) If you implement this, please let me know if it works as documented or do you face any problems.
System Requirements
Lotus Sametime integration with the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 requires the following applications:
- Microsoft Office versions 2003 or 2007
- Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, version 6 or higher
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Server versions 2003, 2007
- Lotus Sametime 8.0.2 client with the Lotus Sametime Connect Integrator for Microsoft Office
- Lotus Sametime server, release 8.0.2 or higher
more information in: Installing Sametime Integration for Microsoft Office
"... Any Office SharePoint Server user's live name that can be resolved using the standard email address field will be recognized and will display its presence status to a user who is logged into Lotus Sametime. Clicking on an active SharePoint user displays a contextual Lotus Sametime menu. During a chat, the Lotus Sametime user is presented with the complete feature set of Lotus Sametime and its third-party plug ins, including emoticons, file sharing, image captures, multiway chats, audio, video, telephony, screen sharing, and chat history ..."
How to do it?
Following files, available with the Lotus Sametime 8.0.2 kit, need to be copied to the SharePoint 2007 Server:
- SharePointImages.zip
- EnsureIMNControl.js
- IMNGetStatusImage_SharePoint2007.js
Read the article - Setting up the Office SharePoint Server for the more details on where to put these files on SharePoint 2007 server and what modifications need to be done.
Once this is done, you need to use the IBM Lotus Sametime Connect client with the Lotus Sametime Connect integrator for SharePoint to verify that the Microsoft Office SharePoint integration feature is working correctly. More information to do this is here - Verifying the Office SharePoint integration setup and troubleshooting information is here - Troubleshooting Office SharePoint integration
