New Micros tablet built on Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry puts real power on the sales floor

At the National Retail Federation Big Show 2014 in New York, Microsoft is demonstrating a food service point of service (POS) solution based on Windows Embedded that lets businesses use affordable off-the-shelf hardware to simplify customer service and business operations. The solution, a collaborative effort with MICROS, Intel and Dell, offers ease of use through an attractive interface, along with quick deployment and the flexibility to scale from small, independent restaurants up to national chains.

Many restaurant technology solutions rely on proprietary hardware or custom ruggedized devices, built to withstand the abuse of a kitchen environment. Such solutions can be expensive and take a long time to develop and deploy. The MICROS Simphony Enterprise solution lets businesses use affordable hardware and quickly implement the system.

In the accompanying video, John Coyne, senior business evangelist at Microsoft, demonstrates MICROS Simphony Enterprise for Food and Beverage, running on a Dell Venue 11 PRO tablet  that incorporates the Intel Atom processor, all powered by Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry.

Restaurant servers can carry the tablet from table to table to take orders and respond quickly to customer requests, or dock it for use with cash drawers, scanners or scales. Managers can access business data such as labor costs, sales performance and trends, inventory, or even security camera feeds or other location-specific information. If the restaurant gets busy, a manager can immediately switch to taking orders, then jump back into data analysis when the rush dies down.

The solution can be deployed on any Windows 8-based device, giving restaurants and other businesses flexibility to fit their technology to their brand design and physical environment. And businesses that are already using Windows-based software to manage their back-end processes can easily integrate the solution and devices into their existing systems.

The MICROS Simphony Enterprise solution is on display in Microsoft’s booth (#2703) at the NRF Big Show 2014 in New York through January 14.
