On MSI 3.0, how does a MSP know it supersedes the previous patches?

Please read the MSDN site on patch sequencing or the patch sequencing whitepaper. Both explain this in detail. Supersedence is based upon the authored MsiPatchSequence table. If after reading this it still doesn't explain why, then let us know so the documentation can be clarified.
