The Developer Roadmap
New from Microsoft Press

This page offers information on the most current Microsoft developer resources. This month we highlight a site for architectural guidance, the Developer Roadmap, and additional resources related to the topics covered in this issue of MSDN Magazine.

Patterns & Practices

If you are looking for technical architectural guidance, check out Microsoft patterns & practices. This site offers design practice guidelines for specific software needs utilizing multiple Microsoft products within the .NET Framework. Rather than offering finished wizards and solutions, the site provides patterns and principles, presenting a solid foundation from which you can then create your own solutions. Patterns & practices offers infrastructure guidance to design, build, and operate integrated solutions. Developers will be able to mix and match design patterns to suit their particular needs. Along with development solutions, the site also provides design patterns for software deployment.

The technical guides are divided into three categories: Reference Architecture, Reference Building Blocks, and Operational Practices.

Patterns & practices plans to use regular interviews with customers to determine their needs and provide design solutions to resolve them. Eventually customers will be able to submit their own design patterns to the site to share with others.

Plans are underway for a series of books to be published by Microsoft Press in conjunction with the patterns & practices group. The first book, on the subject of helping to protect the security of ASP.NET applications, is scheduled to be released in February.

The Developer Roadmap

In the latest .NET Show, Robert Hess interviews Thomas O'Grady and Kerry Carnahan about the .NET Developer Career Skills Roadmap. The Roadmap was designed to help enterprise developers discover the best ways to properly acquire the skills they need for developing applications in .NET. This tool provides a clear mapping of real-world career paths for developers, along with courseware for the most comprehensive .NET training. To learn more, see https://msdn.microsoft.com/theshow.
