In Azure Devops how do I completely delete a custom field I created?

Question

Thursday, October 10, 2019 4:19 PM

I'm sorry if this isn't the right forum but for the life of me I couldn't find one related to project management in Azure DevOps
I created a custom field for tickets in DevOps and when I tried to edit the field type I couldn't so I removed the field and went to recreate it but it tells me that the field name is already in use. I see no way to delete the old field or rename it so that I can create it with the right field type.

Hi Truss,

Really sorry for delay in reply.

According to your description, DevOps forum has been moved to Developer Community Forum, since our forum is discussing about tools and editors of Visual Studio IDE, I recommend you could redirect your issue to this appropriate forum: https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/spaces/21/index.html with tag Azure DevOps, then start a new thread with ‘Azure DevOps’ to seek for a more professional support.

BTW, I have tested and tried to reproduce your issue in my side using DevOps.

I add a new customized field to inherited process and rename as “test1”, then I tried to delete it under Fields. I find it is possible for me to delete and create a new field with the same name.

But I have noticed that there are some original fields that exist in the Fields. After checking your issue, It seems you'd like to add a new field but maybe the name is as same as one certain original fields, which are not allowed to be deleted.

For example, if I create a field named “Activity”, I meet the same error like you.

## We suggest you could check the name in the Field and make sure that there is no certain original fields with the same name as the field name you’d like to add.

>>  I see no way to delete the old field or rename it.

## I’m afraid that the original field are not allowed to be deleted or renamed. But the customized field could.

Hope all above could help you.

Best Regards,

Tianyu

Hi Truss,

Did you try my suggestions?

I suppose the name you set might be as same as certain original field. Since the original filed could not be renamed, you could check this and rename your custom field.

Have a nice day.

Best Regards,

Tianyu
