WIndows 10 1903 - Force a specific default lockscreen and logon image - potentially a bug?

Question

Hi all,

Suddently our pilot users running Windows 10 Pro 1903 x64 DK/US fails to force a specific lockscreen/logon image from GPO's.

The path set in the "Force a specific default lock screen and logon image" is still valid and pointing to a local directory and when looking in the regedit "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization" I can see the path writting in the GPO.

From last known working state the ADMX templates in "central store" was from 1809, I know we have upgraded the ADMX templates to 1903 not so long ago.

Known last working build: 18362.116

Current Windows build is: 18362.175

Anyone seeing problems with this feature?

Regards,

Daniel

This policy has been unreliable in earlier builds as well. It looks like the behaviour has recently changed following a recent cumulative. I've not tracked down exactly when it changed.

The symptom as we see it is that you get a solid colour instead of the expected image enforced by policy. Pressing a key to show the login screen, then allowing that to time-out back to the pre-login lock screen results in the correct image being shown.

Is this what you're seeing?

Hallo Mike,

My thought was also that something has changed by an CU but I have justed tried to use the old image "18363.116" and that is now the same result, that the preferred custom image wasn't set.

Also just tried your suggestion and let the login "time-out" when you see the login/PW box, but without success.

I have tried to google but doesn't seem to get any hits on this matter.

Regards,

Daniel

There are various other threads about this issue, some of which go into quite some detail as to the symptoms/workarounds as seen in earlier builds. I think this one has the most info:

Hi,

Also have a look at this thread:

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Windows-10/Windows-10-1803-Custom-Login-Lock-Screen-Image-Is-Not-Applied/td-p/218144

Since it could be a potential issue in 1903, please use Windows 10 built-in feedback hub (type feedback hub in search box) to give Microsoft a valuable feedback and I am going to submit this case to Microsoft via our channel.

Thanks for your understanding.

Best regards,

Yilia

I should have spotted this earlier - that policy doesn't work on Pro - it requires Enterprise, and has done for quite a while.

Given this, I'm not sure how you had it working earlier, but I think your most likely workaround is one of the ways of replacing the default image that MS would use (C:\Windows\Web\Screen\img100.jpg  I think)
