Uninstall Visual Studio 2015 Community

Question

Monday, November 9, 2015 9:35 AM

I've been having trouble with Visual Studio.  I'm considering a reinstall.  I have some questions about how best to do it.

First some background.  I'm running Windows 8.0.  I installed Visual Studio 2015 Community on 2015/Oct/21.  It took about 13 hours.  The following day, I installed the tools.  That took almost 18 hours.  Then I used the C++ console template to create a "Hello World" program.  It worked.  Then a few days later, when I tried to reopen the project, it didn't recognize it.  I got this message: "The Visual C++ Project System Package did not load correctly.".  The solution said it had zero projects.  When I tried to create a new project from scratch, by clicking on New Project from the opening screen, I got this message: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object".  After using Google, I decided the problem probably had something to do with the registry.  I restored from the system restore point after the first installation, but before the installation of the tools.  That didn't work.  So, I think I have to do a complete uninstall and reinstall.  Here are my questions.

1.  In the Control Panel, under Programs and Features, I found these programs with an Installed On date of 2015/Oct/21 or later.

    Entity Framework 6.1.3 Tools for Visual Studio 2015
    IIS 10.0 Express
    IIS Express Application Compatibility Database for x64
    IIS Express Application Compatibility Database for x86
    9  Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 etc.
    Microsoft .NET Version Manager (x64) 1.0.0-beta5
    Microsoft Help Viewer 2.2
    8  Microsoft SQl Server etc.
    Microsoft System CLR types for SQL Server 2014
    Microsoft System CLR types for SQL Server 2014 (appears twice)
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (x64) 11.0.60610
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (x86) 11.0.60610
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x64) 12.0.21005
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x86) 12.0.21005
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x86) 11.0.30501
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x64) 14.0.23026
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x86) 14.0.23026
    Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2015
    Microsoft Web Deploy 3.6
    Prerequisites for SSDT
    TypeScript Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 1.6.3.0

All 36 of these entries have Publisher: Microsoft Corporation.
Do I need to uninstall all of them?
According to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2771441, Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 should be left in.

2.  There are 9 entries of type:
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
for 2005, 2008, and 2010.  Should I uninstall these also?  The Installed On dates are in 2013 and 2014.

3.  In "View installed updates" there are 5 entries with recent dates.  4 of them are Windows updates, 3 of those are Security updates.  I think I should leave them in.  The fifth entry is:
    Update for (KB2504637)
What is this?  Should I uninstall it?

4.  I created the Visual Studio software in a different directory than Program Files.  Could that have been the source of the problem?

5.  Would it help to upgrade my operating system to Wndows 8.1 or Windows 10?

6.  If I don't delete the program files (Common7\IDE) will that make the reinstallation run faster?

7.  Would it be a good idea to create a system restore point after reinstalling?  The idea being to avoid having to do a complete reinstall if things go wrong again.

Hi Tom Mahon,

Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.

For your questions, You don't need to uninstall all of them, I suggest you try to use /uninstall /force commands to uninstall your visual studio 2015, it will remove all shared components of visual studio 2015.

Please take the following steps to remove it:

1.Download the setup application you used to originally install Visual Studio 2015. If you installed from media, please insert that media.
2.Open a command prompt.
  a.Click Run on the Start menu (Start + R).
  b.Type cmd and press OK (Enter).
3.Type in the full path to the setup application and pass the following command line switches: /uninstall /force
  Example: D:\vs_community.exe /uninstall /force

4.Click the Uninstall button and follow the prompts.

Best Regards,

Jiayi Li

Hi, I want to uninstall because even running on a core i5 with 8 Gb ram, the thing is incredibly slow !

Using visual studio uninstaller doesn't work: it can stay open for hours (1 full night) with progress bar stuck at 1 millimeter and info: "facultative elements".

I tried the /uninstall /force option, but even running the cmd console with admin rights, I get a "forbidden" return..

Can you describe how to do with files-folders and registry keys removal ?

Thanks,

Hello,

I install by error visual studio community 2015.

vs_community.exe /uninstall /force does not clean the installation.

There is a lot of stuff.

How to remove securely all these remnants :

C:\Program Files (x86)

\Common Files

===>Merge Modules

\Common Files\Microsoft Shared :

===> MSENV

===> VS7DEBUG

===> Phone Tools

===> MSDesigners8

===> Windows 10 Remote Tools

===> VsHub

And all the files found into the /users directories and all the files not removed into the visual studio directory and some others files found with the program you recommend the usage : http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2005/07/01/using-msiinv-to-gather-information-about-what-is-installed-on-a-computer.aspx

And many other things we can't uninstall eg. :

Hello,

Because my system was going wrong after the visual studio 2015 community edition (I just wanted Python...), I've had to reinitialize all my W8 installation. Great Job...

Have a good day

Hi Tom,

I want to uninstall visual studio 2015 completely and as it is stated above that I would have to add the path of vs_community.exe in the command prompt to force uninstall. I vs_community.exe is in the hidden folder named ProgramData so I was dubious whether to add that path or not. Could you please clarify my doubt. I'm attaching a screenshort to help you.

oops my account is not verified yet. I will add screenshort later. Till then please help.

Regards,

Rohit Yadav
