Bluetooth Volume problem after Windows 10 April 2018 Update

Question

Tuesday, May 1, 2018 8:55 PM | 38 votes

I have Edifier bluetooth speakers.  Before the Windows 10 April 2018 update I could use the Windows 10 Volume Mixer to change the volume on my speakers, after the update the Window 10 Volume mixer NO longer controls the volume of the bluetooth speakers.  If I change my default speakers to my laptops built in speakers if works, so it seem to be bluetooth specific, though if I mute the sound that works.  Also when trying to adjust the volume, the volume mixer makes beeping noises as it tries to change the volume, but of course the volume does not change.  I have all Windows sounds turned off.  I tried deleting and updating the Edifier and bluetooth drivers, but nothing has helped.  Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

TEMPORARY SOLUTION (until Microsoft will solve the driver issue):

Just roll back your bluetooth adapter driver.

In Start Search type troubleshoot and hit the enter key.

Select Playing Audio

Click Run the troubleshooter

Select Bluetooth

Click Run the troubleshooter

You may try Ear Trumpet, that offers you a smarter way to control the volume for each individual program.

You can download it from Store

I have got the same issue after April`s Windows 10 update that I have just installed. I am using Craetive Muvo 1C Bluetooth speaker and before today`s update, it was working fine. Now the volume over bluetooth is set as max and even when I change the volume using Windows 10, it still plays max volume. Volume control over laptop speakers works fine.

My laptop is Lenovo T440S if it makes any difference. I have updated bluetooth driver and tried troubleshooting but it doesn`t help. When I change the volume using some program like VLC Media Player while watching movie, it works fine, just the Windows volume control seems to not work over bluetooth now.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I also have Edifier bluetooth speakers and that is EXACTLY my experience on two laptops which were updated to the April 2018 update. I sent in a support request to Edifier last night.

I have exactly the same problem - i have two PC's at home - one is running april update (that one has problem that you mentioned) another one does not have this update and sound works fine.

I'm trying to fix it whole day, nothing is helping....

Hope they will create some update to repair it soon.

EDIT: i'm using Marshall Woburn speakers

Same here. After the April update my Bluetooth main volume blasts at full throttle on my Creative T30 speakers. Taskbar volume control doesn't have any effect except for its mute function (on two different laptops). Individual apps' volumes can be changed through their respective volume controls.

Apparently they have implemented this feature to enable controls over individual volume levels of apps.

I found the following article on this feature but it doesn't say anything about the main volume control having lost its functionality:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-manage-sound-settings-windows-10-april-2018-update

Troubleshooting the sound settings didn't help either.

You can control the INDIVIDUAL program volume, but you CANNOT control the master volume, which is the main issue.  I want to have my individual programs volumes where I want them set, then use the master volume, as you normally could before, to actually set the volume coming from my speakers.  The master volume is what is shown on the screen in the taskbar, and volume controllers on hardware, ie a keyboard with volume controller, use the master volume to control the sound from speakers.  This could be considered a work around, but not a fix.

I have same problem with Bluetooth Edifier + windows 10 latest update.

Monday, May 14, 2018 12:38 PM | 5 votes

I have a JBL Go speaker. Before the update I could set the speaker volume on the speaker and the source volume on my lenovo notebook separately. Since the latest Windows update the speaker's volume button changes the windows volume as well, and  vice versa. So I can't set the optimal sound settings now.

Exact same problem with my Edifier 1700BT.... haven't found a workaround yet!

Wednesday, May 16, 2018 8:45 PM | 1 vote

Exact same thing with my Edifier R1700BT's.  The sound also crackles and breaks up a lot more, especially while typing or clicking the mouse.

Update: I may have figured it out!

1. Click Start Menu and type 'sound' to go to the sound control panel

2. right click on the troubled bluetooth sound playback device and select properties

3. go to the 'Advanced' tab and uncheck 'Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device'

Thursday, May 17, 2018 8:12 PM

same thing happen to me. Can not control audio. And most of the time. Blut tooth is not working

I also tried, and it does not work for me either.

Friday, May 18, 2018 11:20 PM | 1 vote

I've got same problem, R1700BT, and no real volume control from windows (only on/off)

Saturday, May 19, 2018 2:48 PM | 2 votes

I tried this as well.  No luck.

On a side note, due to the way I had my volume set up, I think I blew the driver out of my right speaker after the update applied.  Thanks Microsoft.

Saturday, May 19, 2018 8:24 PM | 2 votes

Thanks, but unfortunately neither of the troubleshooters worked.  In my case similar to some others, the Bluetooth device is either silent (when turned down completely), or plays at full volume (if turned up either a little).  This was not occurring before the update was applied.

Sunday, May 20, 2018 2:20 AM | 4 votes

You can control the INDIVIDUAL program volume, but you CANNOT control the master volume, which is the main issue.

Exactly. If you go to the Volume Mixer, adjusting volume for individual apps will correctly affect the bluetooth volume, but the master volume does nothing.

Sunday, May 20, 2018 2:31 AM | 2 votes

You may try Ear Trumpet, that offers you a smarter way to control the volume for each individual program.

Ear Trumpet does the same thing the Volume Mixer does, but will not fix the problem that the master volume control is now useless when using Bluetooth.

Same problem here in France with an iClever USB Bluetooth adapter (CSR8510 A10) and a Philips AEA2700 Bluetooth receiver :

the master volume is now just an on/off switch : off (master volume=0) or full volume (master volume from 1 to 100). Changing this setting does not scale the output volume of any of the applications (system sounds, chrome, firefox, edge, spotify, ...)

Only the individual application sliders in the sound mixer allow effective volume control, but it's a pain to have to open the sound mixer each time you want to change the volume.

The laptop's physical volume + and - keys still set the master volume, hence just an on-off switch since the april W10 update.

Sunday, May 20, 2018 3:01 PM | 4 votes

Same problem here. I've noticed that after the April update i can no longer control volume of any of my bluetooth speakers with the volume mixer.

Monday, May 21, 2018 3:48 AM

Similar problem here. HP Envy x360 with Vizio SB 5.1 3651 Bluetooth speaker.

After recent Windows update, volume control button on laptop keyboard and mouse-clicking volume control bar of Windows cannot be used to adjust Bluetooth speaker anymore. Every time I attempt to increase or decrease volume, the volume bar would flash intermittently with pinging noises and volume would go out of control . The laptop speaker works normally; only the Bluetooth speaker has issues.

This is really annoying because I need the Bluetooth speakers to be controlled from my keyboard. I tried updating all sound drivers, all Bluetooth related drivers, BIOS, changing volume control settings, removing any non-critical Windows/ Flash Player/ etc updates but none of the fix work. This has to be a Windows update issue because it used to work perfectly before.

If someone from Microsoft reads this, please give us instructions on how to fix this problem. Or if anyone figures out how to fix it, please let us know too. Thanks!

I have the exact same problem with JBL Charge Stereo 2. Has someone found any solution to this ??

Monday, May 21, 2018 11:39 PM | 1 vote

Apparently I have the same problem as everyone else, for my Creative T30 speakers.  They had no issues before the April update and now I cannot control the master volume through my keyboard.

Windows bluetooth dev here

If anyone can't control their BT speaker/headphones volume from the PC after the update, can you share a product link to what device you're using?

We added "absolute volume" in the last update which lets the Windows volume slider directly control the local volume of BT speakers/headphones who support it.

Sorry to hear this is happening, I already made a note to look into the Edifier 1700BT and JBL Go, we want this to work as best as possible so let me know the devices you're having issues with and we'll look into it.

Thanks guys!

Tuesday, May 22, 2018 2:14 AM

Windows bluetooth dev here - thanks, I made a note of the receivers, we'll look into what's going on.

Windows bluetooth dev here - thanks for letting us know, I'll added your Vizio soundbar to the list and we'll look into it

Tuesday, May 22, 2018 2:21 AM

Windows bluetooth dev - you're not the only one, it seems we're having issues with JBL in general with absolute volume, I'm looking into this one right now.

Tuesday, May 22, 2018 2:23 AM

Windows bluetooth dev here - yes we're getting reports of absolute volume problems with Creative T30/T50, I'm going to look into it and see what's going on

Hi, I have the same issue as well using my Mi Bluetooth Speaker. If you could fix it as soon as possible it would be nice. Thanks.

Tuesday, May 22, 2018 7:59 AM

I have the same problem with my Edifier R1280DB Bluetooth speakers. Before the update, I was able to use the Windows volume control to adjust the sound of the speaker. Now it doesn't work. When I move the slider the sound remains the same apart from when it is muted. Only the muting works.

Tuesday, May 22, 2018 11:27 AM

Problem exists with Sharkk Mako https://www.sharkk.com/products/mako.

Tuesday, May 22, 2018 11:37 AM

Hello,

I also have issues with Dynaudio BT speakers device, so I think the problem is hardware agnostic and comes from W10 itself. Sames issues, no possibility to control the master volume, with noisy beeps every time the key is hit.

My 2 cents

Tuesday, May 22, 2018 4:12 PM

Ausdom H8 bluetooth headphones have this issue as well. With the number of brands having issues I suspect it is less device specific and more just something broken in the Windows OS. Unless it has to do with Lenovo drivers, as I did see a number of others mention their machine also being a Lenovo.

Tuesday, May 22, 2018 5:36 PM

Works for me, thanks. But since you're looking for devices which don't work properly, my speaker is Anker SoundCore Boost (same problem on two different laptops, Dell and Acer). Thank you for looking into this!

Tuesday, May 22, 2018 6:41 PM

This is exactly why i postpone my updates, but this time Microsoft really outdid themselves. They managed to break it in such manner that they still didnt fix it after almost a month from first report. GJ

BTW it doesnt work on Marshall Kilburn also

I am experiencing the same issue with the  Anker 3143 Premium Stereo Bluetooth Speaker. Tried on both a laptop and a desktop computer. No issues before the last windows update. After the update the master volume control for my bluetoooth speaker broke.

Friday, May 25, 2018 6:12 AM

Same problem with Edifier R2000DB and JBL Flip 4

Friday, May 25, 2018 9:02 AM | 3 votes

I believe most bluetooth speakers are having this problem, and this is so obvious and annoying. Mine is JBL. I used to be able to control its volume with an external dial, which was so convenient, now without physically pressing the volume button on it click by click, there is no way to change the volume...

Since windows 10 I've personally encountered a handful of regression defects - a proven track record that each big update breaks something used to work. I really hope windows team (if that still exists) can just stop making major feature implementation and come back to sort out basic stuff.

Cheers, Daniel

jgabby's solution doesn't work....

Sunday, May 27, 2018 11:17 AM

Exactly the same problem (Edifier 1700BT). It's very frustrating... How they could broke such basic thing. Is there anyone who cares doing some tests before major update?

Sunday, May 27, 2018 8:46 PM | 10 votes

Same goddamn problem here.   When is someone from Microsoft going to fix this?!    FYI the suggestion to run the troubleshooter is foolish useless braindead and tonedeaf.   Don't waste your time, it doesn't work.

To recap...

* This happens for just about EVERY bluetooth speaker, no point in identifying each one, it's endemic to all speakers

* The issue is the complete failure of the master volume toggle.    Master volume basically now has only 2 settings, 0 or 100.    Any value in the slider >0 is treated as 100 volume.

* Application level volume does seem to work still.    To get to the app volume settings, you need to visit "App volume and device preferences" in Settings --> Sound.   This is a somewhat usable workaround but you have to keep that window open at all times.  Blech.

* I installed EarTrumpet and EarTrumpet is a much easier to use, taskbar equivalent of this same settings panel - you can more conveniently reach volume sliders for each app.    But it has the exactly same functionality - it has a master volume slider which is broken because the underlying function in Windows is broken.     But still, to EarTrumpet's credit, it is easier to have this in my taskbar instead of keeping the Windows Sound properties screen open all the time.    Will rely on this until bug is fixed.

RANT: G'd I hate Microsoft and their shitty poorly tested releases.    It is especially infuriating when Microsoft developers offer stupid useless advice like running some troubleshooter before they themselves have figured out that there is actually a code issue, and there is zero transparency as to the timing or other status of this bug.

Sunday, May 27, 2018 8:54 PM

This does not work at all, in fact it made it much worse, killed the Bluetooth service and removed the Bluetoothdevice. I was all working except for the volume control.

This is not related to the Bluetooth device as it was working fine prior to the update, and as you can see from the plethora of devices on this thread its common to all of them.

Monday, May 28, 2018 12:00 PM | 9 votes

hi there!

I've found some universal solution for the malfunction volume sound control via bluetooth speakers (all kind), after April Update. The troubleshooting is the microsoft driver 'bluetooth stereo device' - so the solution is to force to install older drivers, until the potential microsoft update will be relased.

So those ones from here: http://www.driverscape.com/download/bluetooth-stereo ; version 1.3.842.3 works fine with mine bt stereo and the volume error is fixed. To force the installation you should use - device manager -> update drivers in proper audio device -> browse my computer -> from the disc -> proper location.

That's all.

You're welcome :)

Monday, May 28, 2018 1:39 PM

Same problem here. Every bluetooth speaker device I have tried.

Mr R0b0t not happy :-(

Monday, May 28, 2018 3:25 PM

Hi, I've encountered a problem when I was trying your method. It said "the folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. if the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems" even though I picked the .inf files in Win81X64 subfolder.

Tuesday, May 29, 2018 9:18 AM

Make sure that files are extract properly and try - Win8X64. I think 8.1 was in general a bit different...

Tuesday, May 29, 2018 12:21 PM

hello Castorp, i have download it and tried to install it but it says the best drivers for your device are already installed - Audio Endpoint. It is not possible to force to install the one you recommended. Can you maybe advice how to uninstall the Audio Endpoint and install the one you recommended please?

thanks!

Tuesday, May 29, 2018 2:38 PM | 27 votes

From the beginning:

1. Download: Driver Version: 1.3.842.3 (second position), from: http://www.driverscape.com/download/bluetooth-stereo.

2. Extract the files, it should end with new folder: 'realtek_bluetooth_3_842_842_01082015_driver".

3. Open 'device manager' and find name of your bluetooth stereo in 'Sound, Video and Games controller'.

4. Right click and --> Update Driver Software.

5. 'Browse my computer for driver software'.

6. 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'.

7. 'Have disk'.

**8. 'Browse' --> Find this 'realtek_bluetooth' folder and take **'**Win8X64' to install. **

9. Should be fine!

10. Peace.

I tried : ...\realtek_bluetooth_3.842.842.01082015\BT_Driver\Win8X64 but windows refuses to install it. Compatibility issues i guess.

Thank you.

JBL Link 20 no longer able to use Windows 10 master volume. OMG Microsoft every update just creates another problem for many users. I'm just going to turn updates off.

Still not working. At least with JBL Charge 2.

Since it was a bluetooth problem, I was foolishly trying to update my 'Bluetooth controller' and not my 'Sound, Video and Games controller'.

Once I noticed my mistake, I followed your steps and it also worked for me.

Thank you Castorp.

Thursday, May 31, 2018 6:32 PM

My problem is EXACTLY the same as described by nlm on May 01, 2018. Tried the Troubleshooter multiple times. This does not provide a solution/fix. It repeatedly says "Volume too low" and "Not fixed." Actually, this is the opposite of the problem - the problem is that the volume is too high and the volume control in notification area doesn't change the volume level even when the slider is at minimum. It WILL, however, mute the volume. I have also tried disconnecting/reconnecting my device, searched for updated drives, removed and re-paired my bluetooth device, all to no avail.

Thursday, May 31, 2018 6:35 PM

Doesn't work for me either. :-(

Thursday, May 31, 2018 6:40 PM

Using ASUS USB Adapter with Bluetooth (USB-BT400) paired to Sharp Stereo XL-HF203B.

Thursday, May 31, 2018 6:50 PM

Same issue over here using Edifer bluetooth speakers. Can't change the volume. But when I try to do so, it plays a kinda unpleasant beeping volume indicator sound now. Which doesn't change volume either.

Friday, June 1, 2018 1:55 PM

I have the EXACT same problem as described by nlm on May 01, 2018. Neither the Troubleshooter nor Ear Trumpet solve the problem. I am using an ASUS USB Adapter with Bluetooth (USB-BT400) paired to Sharp Stereo XL-HF203B.

Friday, June 1, 2018 4:13 PM

So, I'm having the same issue after the April update.

I have a JBL Charge connected via one of those little USB bluetooth dongles (BT 4.1+LE) which is exhibiting the same issue - Windows master volume control has no effect on the volume, and instead Windows is feeding the audio to the device at 100% volume.

For everyone here who is confused why this was changed, the intent was that Windows would control the volume directly on the Bluetooth device via the Windows master volume control, so when you hit Vol+/Vol- on Windows, you would see the volume change automatically on your Bluetooth device. (i.e. if your device has volume lights, if you changed the volume on Windows, you would see the volume lights change on your device.) This prevents you from having to manage two sets of volumes (one on Windows and one on the device). Sounds great on paper, right?

HOWEVER, the issue is that Microsoft is not properly detecting devices which support automatic/remote volume control - so devices that don't support this are being played at full volume. This is especially bad for devices that don't also have a local volume control, because the audio will just play at full volume uncontrollably. (At least my portable speaker has volume controls...) Not good, though.

I tried the Realtek driver solution above, and that did not work for me, even after re-pairing my speaker.

Microsoft, you guys need to fix this ASAP and get a KB hotfix out there. Not being able to control the master volume output from Windows when using a Bluetooth speaker is unacceptable!

Or at the very least, tell us where the registry key is to disable this so we can go back to the way it was!

@Ganesu do you have any workarounds for us?

Sunday, June 3, 2018 1:25 PM

Please Fix This!

Monday, June 4, 2018 6:43 AM

I can only confirm the bug, it's really annoying.

Tuesday, June 5, 2018 4:01 AM | 1 vote

It's been a month since the problem was first reported and still no hotfix from Microsoft. Any update would be appreciated.

Same problem here with Edifier speakers. Microsoft, please fix this, it's annoying!

Does anybody know how to reverse that half-baked April update?

Wednesday, June 6, 2018 3:38 PM

Same problem with Edifier e25HD (Luna Eclipse).

I can confirm that reverting to the driver 'realtek_bluetooth_3_842_842_01082015_driver', A2DP will resume proper operation.

Even so, these speakers connected via BT to my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will not be volume controlled. This tells me that Samsung drivers on my phone also have a problem similar to the latest Windows update (Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803).

Regarding Android phones and this problem with BT speaker volume, I have just discovered that it has to do with something called 'ABSOLUTE VOLUME'. I went to developer options in settings of the phone and near the end of the list, 'DISABLE ABSOLUTE VOLUME', and this has reinstated correct volume control of the Edifier e25HD (Luna Eclipse).

My Optoma NuForce BE6i & JBL Extreme on the other hand function just right, both on Windows10 and on Android with any drivers including the latest ones.

Thanks for sharing.

Same problem with Edifier S2000PRO speakers. It's very annoying!

Can confirm, rollback of bluetooth driver per steps above is a solid workaround.
I have Edifier 1700BT, Windows 10, Toshiba and Dell notebooks.
All issues resolved after rollback.

Used 'RtkAvrcpCtrlr.inf' file from the 'Win8X64' folder.

Worked like magic.
Thanks to all for the guidance/assistance.

Same here.  Sony laptop and Phillips BT speakers.  Get this fixed!!!

Saturday, June 9, 2018 2:53 PM

This works! Thanks

There is a God.

This worked for me as well. I now have volume on my Edifier BT speakers. Whoever the OP for this fix is I'd get you a case of your favorite beer if I knew where to send it :)

Cheers and huge thanks.

Same issue here with Ausdom AH861 headphones on two different PCs that recently updated, although Soundpeats Q800 work as before.  I'm using the same no-name Bluetooth adapter on both PCs.

Same problem over here. BIG THX to Castorp for his solution.

Sunday, June 10, 2018 10:08 PM

Having the same issue. Some help with a fix would be much appreciated. Sent in an error feedback.

Tuesday, June 12, 2018 12:06 AM

Castorp's solution above works, but it also removes a lot of driver enhancements like loudness equalization and bass boost, so you have to pick a lesser evil here.

Tuesday, June 12, 2018 5:22 PM

Exactly the same problem with the same speakers. I solved it by reverting to the previous version of Windows 10. The latest update is flakey to say the least, you won`t be losing anything by rolling back.

Thursday, June 14, 2018 6:18 AM

Not all Realtek Bluetooth drivers are the same and I found that a fresh reinstall of Win 10 ver 1803 (x86) using Realteks brand new (12/04/2018) Bluetooth UART driver version number 1.0.250.2 fixed this issue for me. My hardware (an HP Stream 8 tablet) includes the Realtek RTL8723BS combination WiFi/BT chipset. My Anker Soundbuds Tag Earbud headset has never sounded better with stereo audio back working fully again and now using the headsets volume control displays the Win 10 volume slider as changes are made.

So the problem affects ALL bluetooth speakers, and the solution appears to be replace the driver with one downloaded directly from the manufacturer.

This solution is technical and time-consuming.

It also indicates that the problem is Microsoft's driver is broken. Microsoft supplies drivers for almost everything in your computer and I wonder if this is a good idea. Quality control does not seem to be as good as the manufacturer in many cases.

Thursday, June 14, 2018 3:19 PM

I'm having the same problem with Klipsch, The Three

Sunday, June 17, 2018 1:05 AM

Hello, please I have the same issue with my tronsmart mega 40w, audio's working but no volume control, works fine on Linux by the way :).
I would really appreciate if you guys could find a solution.
Thanks.

10. Peace.

Thank you for this workaround, it worked ok with my tronsmart mega element 40w. Very greatful.

Thank you, you beautiful person! This fixed it for me (but only after a restart).

Thursday, June 28, 2018 6:31 AM

Same issue with Creative T30. Workaround with older drivers (from MSI site for GT62VR 6RD Dominator laptop) not working on Qualcomm Atheros Bluetooth chipset. When using vol +/- I hear beeping only instead of volume change.

Thursday, June 28, 2018 7:56 PM

Praise be! This was driving me (and my family members) nuts. Installing the old drivers worked after following your instructions to the letter. Thanks a lot!

Friday, June 29, 2018 10:22 AM

Over here exactly the same problem, but with my Nyne Bass

Friday, June 29, 2018 10:45 AM

It works ;).

Much better than walking to my speaker

Thanks

Sunday, July 1, 2018 12:36 PM

Perfect. This trick of installing an older driver worked for my Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adapter!
Had the same issue as everyone else reported. This bluetooth adaptor has no volume controls and is directly connected to the back of an amplifier. Also almost blew out my speakers. Crazy.
Disappointed how microsoft has not tested this!!

Thanks Castorp

Monday, July 2, 2018 9:55 AM

Btw: the trick to revert to an older Realtek driver does not help.

Monday, July 2, 2018 5:33 PM

Same problem with by Marshall Woburn Bluetooth speaker.   Really frustrating!

Monday, July 2, 2018 11:55 PM

Same problem Edifier e25HD Luna Eclipse

Please fix this and thanks in advance.

Tuesday, July 3, 2018 5:32 PM

Just installed a bluetooth device on a new windows 10 box. Same issue.

Then used trick from Castorp. Installed older Realtek driver. Issue resolved.

Why is this still not resolved with the latest update(s) from microsoft. Seems to have been an issue for over a month. Just roll back to the older driver, remove the feature. And then when it is all fixed, roll out the latest properly tested. Why can't this be done?

Starting to understand why many consumers buy Apple computers. This is just another example of microsoft trying but missing the boat.

Friday, July 6, 2018 10:47 AM

Worked like a charm!

If this causes your bluetooth device to shut down completely, go to Bluetooth & other devices and find your audio, then Disconnect (not Remove device) and Connect. Should work now! Worked with my Edifier R1700BT.

Dear Microsoft Team,

it's been a couple of months since the issue persists and I'm wondering why there is still no generic solution for a problem that probably applies to most bluetooth speakers out there, as forums are full of reports: Google

In my case it's Anker SoundCore Mini (1) and Anker SoundCore Mini 2

Friday, July 13, 2018 2:54 PM

Mine is a BOSE Soundlink. Same issue. None of the Drivers fix it.

Sunday, July 15, 2018 2:19 PM

Same problem, no solution proposed in this thread is working. I've been patiently waiting for a solution, yet after searching the web and seeing endless reports of similar failures, there is no Microsoft acknowledgement of the defect they introduced, nor any workaround short of rolling back the update.  XPS13, Edifer 1700BT.

Microsoft has ruined an otherwise truly exceptional speaker system.

unbelievable, still no permanent fix from Microsoft... really?

Wednesday, July 25, 2018 2:09 AM

How are we in July and this is still a problem?!! I just had a major windows update and now have the same issue as everyone above. Don't even ask me what device I'm using. This has been a never-ending issue with Microsoft updates. Don't you test your updates before release? Does anyone there have Bluetooth speakers? It is a systemic issue across the board. I delay updates on purpose because I need to make sure I have time to fix your screwups. Test your updates before you release them.

Tuesday, July 31, 2018 9:48 AM

After installing bluetooth speakers and connecting them successfully (beep!):

Tuesday, July 31, 2018 6:11 PM | 2 votes

3 months since the issue was reported here. Microsoft, please, fix this. This is extremely inconvenient for every user.

Tuesday, July 31, 2018 7:30 PM | 1 vote

While rolling back drivers did the trick, now I have no options for enhancements and now my adapter (PHILIPS AEA2700) disconnects randomly. Thank you Microsoft!

Thursday, August 2, 2018 4:52 PM | 1 vote

Same issue here with Edifier e108BT speakers.  I haven't tried rolling back the driver yet; was hoping Microsoft would have delivered a fix by now.

MICROSOFT DEVS: Is this something you expect to fix soon? Do you have an ETA you can share?

Thursday, August 2, 2018 5:09 PM | 1 vote

Also can't believe this wasn't fixed yet. I just can't handle the pain of having no control over my volume anymore.

I use a Sprout amplifier from PS Audio and have the same issue for almost four months now.

Tuesday, August 7, 2018 10:05 AM

Same problem here I will try rolling back the drivers but this is a temporary solution and is pretty sketchy, this is unacceptable they not only fuck up new things they fuck up perfectly working old things

Works for me, thank you, but still, I don't like such workarounds. Microsoft - shame on you!

Friday, August 10, 2018 10:36 PM | 1 vote

Microsoft should also realize that this is dangerous, as it can easily playback at full volume in a headset rather than the previously set lower volume, which can damage people's hearing.

Monday, August 13, 2018 2:25 PM

This fixed the issue.  Thank you Castorp!

Saturday, August 18, 2018 12:45 AM

Still no fix... I'm wondering if they even realize there's a problem :D

Sunday, August 19, 2018 8:59 PM

Been having this issue with my logic sp3 speaker and already tried all the proposed solutions in this thread but nothing worked.

Monday, August 20, 2018 8:07 AM

CSR8510 dongle and JBL Playlist.

Dongle works well with bluetooth headphones but not the JBL Playlist.

The JBL Playlist will work but only with Groove Music.

Horrible workaround that works for me.  Play a song with Groove Music and Exit before the song ends.  This does not work if you let the song finish.

From that point the JBL Playlist will work.  I have tested it with iTunes, VLC and Chrome (radio station).

Groove appears to be making a change - likely related to the volume updates / defects.

Monday, August 20, 2018 9:06 AM

The Groove Workaround works until you next disconnect and reconnect the speaker.

Does anyone else see this same behaviour ?

It's been almost 5 months and Microsoft still hasn't fixed their screw up with this problem. Only this solution fixed my problem, but it's honestly sad that a normal person had to come up with a fix for the mistake of a multi-billion dollar company like Microsoft. I suggest everybody try this solution. Also, if it doesn't work, try selecting the RtkAvrcpCtrlr file instead of the one that gets selected by default. The default file didn't work for me so I selected that one instead and volume control was restored. Thanks, Castorp.

Saturday, August 25, 2018 3:16 PM

Just keep in mind that if you rely on any kind of sound enhancements, those will not be available after applying this workaround (my story).

Saturday, August 25, 2018 3:18 PM

Hi All

Have you all checked event viewer (winlogo +X) and expand windows logs> take a look at Application or System to find all errors relate to Bluetooth.  copy the current error here to analyze.

Momominta

there is nothing to analyze :D none of the bluetooth speakers/headphones allow volume control for anybody

Saturday, August 25, 2018 6:40 PM

What exactly did you do to fix the issue with the Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adapter? It is driving me insane!

Sunday, August 26, 2018 2:25 AM

The Device Manager workaround doesn't work for me, or I should say it does immediately after installing it, I'm able to change the volume normally but when I go into a game or movie the headphones just reset and don't work after that, I have to repair again and it over writes with it's own driver again.

So yea WHERE is that Microsoft DEV that was in here earlier, any updates on this  ?

Monday, August 27, 2018 9:13 AM

I changed to a Broadcom Dongle and the JBL Speaker now works.  Old Dongle CSR8510.  New Dongle BCM20702.  Maybe someone in Microsoft does not like Qualcomm.

Tuesday, August 28, 2018 4:04 PM

Thank you thank you thank you! This fix works 100%. Much appreciated!

Thursday, September 6, 2018 5:54 PM

just flying by to see what's happening. we still need a solution from microsoft.

Sunday, September 9, 2018 2:42 AM

Same Problem here with Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adaptor - Thought it would fixed in the following update since it was such a major screw up. Good job Microsoft.

I just spent 45 minutes updating my wife's Surface and searching once again for a solution to this insane Bluetooth audio issue. Reading threads and wasting my time again.

I don't like being the beta/alpha tester for your new xeon based enterprise window versions...

Hey MICROSOFT YOU BROKE THE FRIGGIN BLUETOOTH.

BTW I bought my first Apple iMac for work, because I got tired of the forced updates that break drivers and render my hardware nearly useless. I use Windows in a virtual machine on the Mac when I have to visit this world at work.

My 5 other computers are win10 machines... when they become obsolete I am not sure if Windows 11 is in my future.

Tuesday, September 11, 2018 1:56 AM

Update only happened 2 days ago for me for whatever reason.

Now I can't control my Edifier luna e25 HD anymore.

Some windows me level support from Microsoft as usual.

Friday, September 14, 2018 4:18 PM

Same problem here.  Anker A3143 in case Microsoft still don't understand that it's affecting a huge number of devices.

Don't really want to have to manually downgrade drivers but it seems like this is never going to be fixed!

Saturday, September 15, 2018 3:01 PM

Edifier e10bt having same issue

Sunday, September 23, 2018 11:13 PM

Might be dumb question. But WHERE and WHICH exact driver to update? Can someone plz give complete steps if that works. I looked into "Device Manager" -> "Audio inputs and outputs", "Bluetooth", "Network adapters", "Sound, video and game controllers" categories, but nowhere with my sound system manufactorer's name there option "Roll back driver" available. Everywhere that option is DISABLED

Sunday, September 30, 2018 4:02 PM

this is still broken. what are the chances it is fixed in this year's fall update?

Saturday, October 6, 2018 10:09 AM | 1 vote

I had exactly the same problem after Windows 10pro64 1803 update: volume level either 0% or 100% with no output level in between although the volume slider was able to position in between (Edifier R1700BT). With 1709 no problem which I was reinstalling then. Now since 1809 was released: same problem again: The internal speakers (Lenovo T470p) still run fine, also (surprisingly) my BT connected Bose Quiet Control 30 earphones run adjustable. But the Edifier speakers show the same strange behaviour as with the 1803 update; so no change to 1809. :-(

Sunday, October 7, 2018 2:53 AM

funny thing is my bose AE2 headphones also work fine. But nothing else seems to be controllable. Neither my QCY QY12 wireless headphones nor my creative T30 wireless speakers... too bad it's not fixed in 1809. I've seen a couple articles saying Microsoft had to pull the update due to massive personal files deletion issue. I miss the Windows 7 times...

Tuesday, October 9, 2018 7:40 AM | 4 votes

I will IMPROVE on this solution by the following:

Go to this page:

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=0000110b-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb

It searches for the OFFICIAL MICROSOFT DRIVERS relating to the device 0000110b-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb which is RtkA2dp - basically your bluetooth speaker drivers.

Choose the latest driver

Realtek - MEDIA - 6/22/2018 12:00:00 AM - 1.1.137.3 Windows 10 version 1803 and Later Servicing Drivers Drivers (Sound) 6/22/2018 1.1.137.3 104 KB

and download it on your machine and extract the files.

Then follow the same procedure from point 3 onwards to update your drivers:

The benefit from this driver is that it is much newer than the 2014 driver suggested, and it will reconnect my bluetook speaker automatically after a reboot! EXCELLENT. ENJOY!

3. Open 'device manager' and find name of your bluetooth stereo in 'Sound, Video and Games controller'.
4. Right click and --> Update Driver Software.
5. '**Browse my computer for driver software'.
**6. '**Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'.
7. 'Have disk'.
8. 'Browse' --> Find the files you just extracted and click OK to install.
**9. Should be fine!
10. Peace.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL! ENJOY!

I had the same problem with my Ausdom AH861 headphone and crated a program that forces Windows 10 to behave like before the update.  I hoped that Fall update (1809) would address this problem, but apparently it didn't.  So, I've made it available for the people who are having the similar problem.

It's in beta testing, but it can be downloaded from https://www.bluetoothgoodies.com/tweaker/ .

Hope this helps.

Thanks for this. I've been living with this for months!

Wednesday, December 5, 2018 12:11 PM

@sarai2 Thanks this worked for me. It's crazy that this problem has been there for months and Microsoft can't fix it.

I have the same issue with adjusting the "master volume" after one update, but it's even worse in a sense & is kind of the reverse... The volume control slider works for my Bluetooth headphone, but it doesn't work for the volume coming from the PC itself (the device is Realtek HD audio)... So the PC will play the same high volume no matter if I set the device volume to 2 or 100, unless it's muted...

And it's really annoying because the only way I could lower the volume will be to open the volume control in control panel and lower the volume for each individual window/application.

Do we have a solution from Microsoft yet??

Ediphier S1000 speakers.

I had the exact same issue with the Edifier R2730DB. I'm also running Win10 Pro.

Reverting drivers didn't help for me. I know that there are some third party (beta) tools that may help, but I didn't want to pay or install beta software. After A LOT of googling, I found a thread on answers.microsoft.com. I am not allowed to post links (because this account isn't verified yet), but just google for 5be7a2a0-2caa-47f0-8054-fba5d7b4f282.

Their suggested answer worked for me perfectly:

To disable the Absolute Volume feature manually:

1.     In the Search box, type cmd.  Right-click Command Prompt in the Search results and select Run as administrator.

2.     In the Command Prompt window, type the following command:

reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Bluetooth\Audio\AVRCP\CT /v DisableAbsoluteVolume /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Did they solve it yet? Because I'm tired of not beeing able to use my headphones via bluetooth

Sunday, December 30, 2018 11:22 AM

Cheers mate

Seems to have worked for me.

I have a few systems that work and some that don't. It seems if the bluetooth device is just speakers it does not work properly, however if the device has hands free or microphone for example then the computer identifies it differently.

However, your solution seems to work fine!!

Once again thanks and happy new year.

I struggled with this for months until the October update.  That fixed my bluetooth issues.

This is the only real answer as rolling back drivers results in a loss of functionality and only works if your BT adapter is Realtek. If you have a Qualcomm adapter this is your only option.

Monday, January 14, 2019 3:18 PM

Thanks, Ear Trumpet resolved the issue for me.

Tuesday, January 22, 2019 4:46 PM

Thank you soo much! Worked for me to.

Im using the Logitech Bluetooth adapter. Interesting fact: A 2nd one of the same type worked as it should. Only difference: When i connected the two adapters, both had the same name "Logitech BT Adapter". But the one that didn't work had a headspeaker symbol while the working one hat a loudspreaker symbol. Don't know if that matters.

  2. Jump to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Bluetooth\Audio\AVRCP\CT

  3. Create REG_DWORD DisableAbsoluteVolume and set it's value to 1.

This is a known Microsoft issue with Absolute Volume that was introduced. Answer is to disable absolute volume as valaki2018 and PixelPikey stated.

Actual answer in MS thread: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-10-version-1803-april-2018-update-broke/5be7a2a0-2caa-47f0-8054-fba5d7b4f282

Registry edit worked for me. I had one JBL Link that was not working and a soundbar that was working well.

Now both are working with windows 10/keyboard  volume controls

same problem here with harman kardon onyx mini

what i do is restart audio service

1. type services.msc in the run promt

2. find windows audio, right click go to properties

3. click stop button.. and then start it again

4. restart..

now i can control my volume again

Tuesday, July 9, 2019 6:21 PM

This should not be an accepted answer at this point in time.  Look below for the registry entry to disable this hideous "feature."

Sunday, July 28, 2019 1:10 AM

it worked perfectly!

maybe it is a problem of incompatible scale betwen win10 and, in my case, my jbl2go.

now, i turn the jbl stereo's volume to the max and controle the max's scale by the +- of win 10

Sunday, July 28, 2019 11:50 PM

This did it for me, I had the previous drivers work on an old windows, was tedious to reconnect every start up. New windows didn't accept the driver, this method was alot easier and effective. Cheers mate

it's not a question of list of producers.. it's a question of a master volume control,

just keep the volume buttons as a master volume control as it was beffore,

thanks

Thursday, January 2, 2020 2:40 PM

Hi everyone,

I had a problem with my Edifier R1700BT bluetooth speakers connected via bluetooth to Windows 10 PC (version 1909 build 18363.535). Connected with ASUS USB-BT400 usb dongle. I was unable to change master volume in the taskbar near to system clock. Only possible to switch sound off or on.

I tried many workarounds - nothing helped.

Then I found below solution - it helped me (after Windows restart).

Best wishes to everyone,

Alexander

Warning

Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. For added protection, back up the registry before attempting to modify it.

Make sure you've installed the latest updates from Windows Update. (A solution for this issue was included in the update for Windows 10 version 1803.)

To check for updates, select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Manually disable the Absolute Volume feature by making a change in the registry. To do this, go to Start and type cmd. Right-click Command Prompt in the Search results and select Run as administrator.
In the Command Prompt window, type the following command:

reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Bluetooth\Audio\AVRCP\CT /v DisableAbsoluteVolume /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

You may need to restart Windows for the registry change to take effect.

Note

To re-enable the Absolute Volume feature, type the following command in the Command Prompt window:

reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Bluetooth\Audio\AVRCP\CT /v DisableAbsoluteVolume /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

This solution DOES NOT WORK.

The solution that DOES WORK is in the end of that page.

I wonder why the idiots from microsoft stuff has not yet bring the solution up to save all of as from loosing time to search for it.

SOLUTION:

1. Open up Registry Editor (regedit.exe)

2. go to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Bluetooth\Audio\AVRCP\CT

3. if there is an entry called DisableAbsoluteVolume change its value to 1.

4. if there is no entry just create one with that name and value- right click, then new then select DWORD.

5. restart you computer.
