Visual Studio 2017/2019 Professional/Enterprise Standalone License

Question

Tuesday, March 26, 2019 9:15 AM

Hello,

Our company develops commercial software and has ~230 PCs/~180 Users. Among them there are ~50 developers (Java, RAD Studio, VS Code, etc.) and only 15 are working in Visual Studio (currently we have 15 licenses for VS 2010 SP1 Professional). And we would like to upgrade our outdated IDE's.

As far as I can see there is Standalone License for Visual Studio 2017 Professional (with price $499).

My questions are:

  1. For 15 developers we need 15 Standalone Licenses - right?
  2. Can we use 5 licenses for **Visual Studio 2017 Community **and 10 Standalone Licenses for **Visual Studio 2017 Professional **(our company has less than 250 PCs/users and less than one million U.S. dollars in annual revenues)?
  3. Are there any limitations regarding VS 2017 updates (for example 15.9 -> 15.10)? Or we can update to latest 15.x version at any time we want?
  4. Are there any limitations regarding OS upgrade (for example Windows 8 -> Windows 10) or hardware upgrade (for example switching from Intel to AMD) on developer's PC?
  5. Are there any limitations regarding number of devepoler's devices (can user for example install VS 2017 at work and at home at the same time)?
  6. Does Visual Studio 2017 Enterprise have Standalone license and where can I find information about pricing?

BTW. We are aware of upcoming Visual Studio 2019 release. Is there any info on the same questions as applied to this IDE version?

Thank you in advance.

Hi bairog1,

Welcome to the MSDN forum.

  1. Yes, you need 15 standalone license (All Visual Studio subscriptions and Visual Studio Professional are licensed on a per-user basis. Each licensed user may install and use the software on any number of devices to design, develop, test, and demonstrate their programs.).
  2. Yes, you can. Please refer to: https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/compare/ and actually, For all other usage scenarios: In non-enterprise organizations up to 5 users can use Visual Studio Community. In enterprise organizations (meaning those with >250 PCs or > $1M in annual revenue) no use is permitted for employees as well as contractors beyond the open source, academic research and classroom learning environment scenarios described above.
  3. Currently, VS 2017 version 15.9.10 release yesterday. We have no idea about if 15.10 would be published in the future. There are none any limited about update process and perform it whenever you want to. (note: keep a stable internet connection is necessary.)
  4. For windows update issue, I recommend you redirect to windows update forum for a better support since our forum is mainly related to VS IDE issue. If possible, you can check if following thread is helpful: https://support.microsoft.com/en-sg/help/3044374/update-that-enables-you-to-upgrade-from-windows-8-1-to-windows-10 . any more question, you can click “contact us” in left upper corner of the web page.
  5. The licensed user can install and use the software on any number of devices. The software can be installed and used on your devices at work, at home, at school, and even on devices at a customer’s office or on dedicated hardware hosted by a third party. Most subscriber software can also be run in Microsoft Azure VMs. However, the software is otherwise not licensed for use in production environments.
  6. Here is license price of VS enterprise : https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/pricing/#tab-b8953f16f0b68f60f18
  7. About VS 2019 license term, please refer to: https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/license-terms/ .

Reference: Microsoft Visual Studio Licensing.

Hope it would be helpful and Please let us know if this resolves your issue.

As I can see on this page - for VS 2017 Enterprise the only option is license with subscription, right?

But I was asking about Standalone License for VS 2017 Enterprise (the one for VS 2017 Professional is here - https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/pricing-details/ - Standalone License tab.). So is it possible for VS 2017 Enterprise?

Thank you.
