Enable Download Only in Document Library

Question

Thursday, April 16, 2020 5:29 PM

Case- The Requester want for all users to click on a few documents in a folder so that they download to their desktop instead of being able to view them in the browser.

Question- How can I disable the View In Browser Option for that library? Can it be applied to only one folder? Or will I need to create a new library so it does not affect the other documents?

Notes- We are using SharePoint Online in O365

Hi Rose,

To Disable the browser option for a Library, Go to Library Settings -> Advanced Settings -> Open Documents in the Browser -> check for Open in the Client Application.

Make sure you activate the Open Documents in Client Applications by Default site collection feature in Site settings. To do this, follow these steps:

Go to Site Settings -> Click Site Collection Features -> and Locate the Open Documents in Client Applications by Default feature in the list, and then click Activate.

**Note: **This setting will affect the behavior of the SharePoint Online site collection.

Below article for reference:

No you can't do it at folder level it has to be at library level only.

That should be the best option for not affecting the other documents.

Hi Alyssa Rose,

SharePoint online can make open documents in the client application instead of open documents in the browser as the default opening method. But the behavior that open documents in the browser cannot be disabled. Here’re steps.

1. Enable the Open In Client feature for site collections.

(1)In the SharePoint site collection, choose the Settings icon -> Site Settings.

(2)On the Site Settings page, under Site Collection Administration, choose Site Collection Features.

(3)On the Features page, for the “Open Documents in Client Applications by Default” feature, choose Activate to enable the Open In Client feature, documents will open in the client application.

2. Set the default open behavior for a document library by using the document library settings page.

(1)On the document library page, choose the Library tab.

(2)In the Settings group, choose Library Settings.

(3)On the Document Library Settings page, choose Advanced settings.

(4)On the Advanced Settings page, in Opening Document in the Browser, select the option “Open in the client application”. Then in this library, the document will open in the corresponding client application if it's available.

The behavior will affect the entire library, cannot just apply to one folder. You could create a new library to store the folder.

Best regards,

Emily Du
