DefaultUser0 after sysprep

Question

Monday, May 20, 2019 4:01 PM

Hello,
I created Windows 10 build 1809 template for virtual environment (VMware 6.0). After deployed new VM from template (sysprep), I get Windows login prompt with DefaultUser0. Maybe something got wrong during sysprep operation.

These are steps I performed for preparing template:

1. Installed Windows 10 build 1809
2. Rebooted in Audit Mode (OOBE => CTRL + SHIFT + F3)
3. Windows Update
4. Customized user profile (desktop icons, layout; nothing else)
5. Run cmd:

C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm /unattend:D:\CopyProfile.xml

Where D:\CopyProfile.xml is a unattend file contained in *.ISO mounted.
This is XML file content:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<unattend xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:unattend">
    <settings pass="specialize">
        <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
            <CopyProfile>true</CopyProfile>
        </component>
    </settings>
</unattend>
  1. Converted VM into template
  2. Deployed new VM from template
  3. After while I get Windows 10 login prompt with DefaultUser0; then I cannot do anything else because the password is unknown, and Safe Mode is unusable because only one active user (DefaultUser0).

Then I mounted the disk of new VM into another machine for reading sysprep logs (%windir%\System32\Sysprep\Panther).
I post here rows containing "Error" and "Warning" words only.

I thought this issue was fixed....

Try these:

Hello Joe,

I tried the AutoElevationAllowed way, but the behavior doesn't change.
Basically between point 5 and 6:

...
5a. Switched off VM
5b. Mounted its disk into another machine, loaded the hive and performed the steps listed in articles you suggested
5c. Unloaded the hive and dismounted disk
...

New VM created from template now contains the key, but the DefaultUser0 is still there.
setuperr.log contains the same entries, but setupact.log is little different:

**
Notes:** Windows Server 2016 created at same manner works without any issue. Both Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 build 1809 comes from VLC ISOs.

Any other suggestion ?

Thank you,
Luca

Hi,

Please try the following method to fix it:

Windows 10 Defaultuser0 password Issue (SOLVED!)

Besides, check the symptom in clean environment:

  1. Clean install

  2. Created a user account + enabled

  3. Sysprepped & Imaged

  4. Created provisioning package with "HideOOBE = True"

  5. Applied provisioning package to the WIM

  6. Downloaded the updated image

  7. After imaging + 1st boot logon screen displays both DefaultUser0 and the additional user account.
