EseDiskFlushConsistency - win10 1709

Question

Tuesday, December 12, 2017 10:19 AM | 23 votes

after recent win10 update to 1709, i started to c these weird stuffs on my pc:

event log:

Log Name:      Application
Source:        ESENT
Event ID:      916
Task Category: General
Level:         Information
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Description:
DllHost (11700,G,0) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency is enabled in ESENT due to the beta site mode settings 0x800000.

this log shown in the event log quite frequently

and i getting a prompt i never saw b4, about my disk is running out of space, but it's not true.

is this a new "feature" from win10 1709 update?

whatever it is doing, its is showing negative effect

update:

the logs still persist, thought the prompt/popup i getting about "running out of space", it's from google drive

after the last time the popup happened, by the timing, then i realized the cause (for the out of space popup), is due to i scheduled a auto-trimming over my SSD .

in short, for my issue, it's started by the "running out of space" popup, then i gathering logs to pinpointing the cause, drilling at the event log.

whether these logs has any significant impact or hint, no idea, but at least now I realize the popup is due to the ssd auto-trimming process (which will used all drive diskspace for its process, as by design (afaik) ).

Hi Kelmen,

I see some people encountering this problem, this event seems to being "harmless".
For this event, there is an explanation, please check the link below.

Hope it could be helpful to you

harmless?

reading through the whole posting, 1 post about harmless, the other at least 3 talking about crash, lag.

<shake head>

Thursday, January 4, 2018 10:19 PM | 17 votes

The problem maybe harmless to the system, but for gamers it crashes the games being played every time a flush occurs. This is demonstrated in the event logs. We pay for Windows and we pay for our games, and then Windows throws a new beta feature in that destroys our ability to play the games we own on systems we own. That is not harmless.

Same issue playing PUBG brand new laptop, all drivers up to date all windows updates installed. I see this each and everytime I get lag for 3-5 secs in game. Everytime:

svchost (3576,G,0) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency is enabled in ESENT due to the beta site mode settings 0x800000.

or

svchost (4424,G,0) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency is enabled in ESENT due to the beta site mode settings 0x800000.

The no. in brackets changes each time I also get:

SettingSyncHost (8992,G,0) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency is enabled in ESENT due to the beta site mode settings 0x800000.

again no. changes in brackets each time.

There can be 5 minutes or 10 minutes between it occurring. The error shows in the event log wethere I'm playing a game or the PC is idle.

So first question is why is something BETA running

2nd question how do I fix or disable it.

Am being significantly impacted by PC activity that is throwing this message.  There is some sort of problem that is throwing this message, but I have no idea if some aspect of EseDiskFlushConsistency or ESENT (whatever THEY are) is the culprit or if that is just a message that is a symptom of some other issue, such as malware (I run Norton).

I have two accounts on a ASROCK motherboard running an AMD processor with 8GB.  The normal (non-admin) MS account that I normally use seems to be working without difficulty. The local admin account (that I rarely use) is crippled by problems that has thrown thousands of "Information events" (62,506 [the max it will hold?]) in one 4 hour period this evening, but I have been fooling with this for most of the afternoon, so I suspect there were thousands more that were discarded..

I wanted to track down a problem with MS Outlook (Office 365) "restarting" arbitrarily several times a day (especially when editing a draft).  Following a suggestion, I signed out and logged into the admin local account.

It was unusable.  Slow as Christmas.

  • Wanted to start sysconfig, but help box took 10 seconds to type each letter.
  • Minutes to load a page in Edge.
  • Task manager showed "Host Process for Windows Tasks", an independent process running taskhostw.exe, driving disk activity at 25-30%.  Went on and on, almost without pause.
  • Used Task Manager, the standalone Windows executable "Process Explorer", Event Viewer, and Resource Monitor to gather local performance data about the process, including vast numbers of these EseDiskFlushConsistency messages.  Logged out and looked the message up on browser. Tried rebooting, shutting down non-Windows services I don't need ("clean boot"), switching back and forth between the admin and non-admin accounts.
  • Finally, in Process Explorer, I killed the svchost.exe process tree that included taskhostw and UMont64.exe.  Momentary relief.
  • Then, after a little while, dllhost.exe ("COM Surrogate") started doing almost the same thing (high disk activity, same message except that it cites dllhost.exe). It would occasionally pause for a while (15-20 seconds or so) then start again. I killed the first one I found using Process Explorer, but another one jumped in.  I killed that one too.
  • Meanwhile, the Edge browser was running extremely slowly.
  • Logged out and back in again. taskhostw started acting up again and I killed it with PE again, this time only killing taskhostw, not the UMont64.exe process that was in the same tree.  Momentary relief. I ended up killing UMont64.exe, too. Momentary relief.
  • Starting Edge or Settings kicked off COM Surrogate/dllhost.exe with high disk activity.
  • Closed both Edge & Settings, but COM Surrogate just keep running at high disk activity.  I ran out of patience; it might have settled down on its own.
  • I checked for system file errors with DISM and sfc. Found nothing.
  • Once the taskhostw and dllhost tasks are killed the disk activity settles down, but the browser on the admin account is still too slow to be usable. I have seen taskhostw jump back in but not start driving the disk activity like before. I have also seen EseDiskFlushConsistency event messages that cite svchost and RuntimeBroker.
  • I am confident that going back into the admin account will just start taskhostw on a tear again.
  • I note that in the normal (non-admin) account COM Surrogate fires briefly when doing browser and settings activity but it then settles down quickly; and it never gets to the 25-30% of disk that it showed in the admin account.

I hope this (excessively long) narrative will offer a clue to someone who can fix this kind of thing.

Update the next day: After I posted this, I noticed last night, while logged into in the normal (non-admin) account, that I was still getting these notices, but not nearly as frequently; Task manager did not show anything unusual and performance did not seem excessive.  This morning, after waking up the PC in the normal account, in about 30 minutes I received another 25 of these messages, citing svchost a couple of times, mostly RuntimeBroker, and once by SettingSyncHost (right as the computer woke up). Now, 10 minutes later, they seem to have stopped being thrown (of course, all I have done in those 10 minutes is edit this post and look at Event viewer). I'm going to

  1. Run a deep scan by Norton
  2. If that still leaves the admin account crippled, then call MS Assure and ask how I can delete/recreate the admin account to see if that will fix the problem.

well, I'm waiting for your answer. it's been 23 hours and 5 minutes.

Same problem.

Done a total windows reinstall, once with Synback, then with a CD-rom because it didn't solve my problems.

I updated up to windows 10; 1709, and it seems here was the error because this version is corrupted 100%

Twice every minute i get the "Info" about EseDiskFlushConsistency, but i have also the AUDIODG.EXE crash alert.... Crashing and crashing and crashing.

I searched after problems and errors after Fortnite sound crashed each time i went into the lobby, and then even the game crashed.

I'm still searching for solutions, and i hope Windows is hard working on that.....

I am having the exact same issue as described. Overwatch crashes at seemingly random times.

Initially thought it was overheating, checking temp on cpu & gpu, no issues. Fresh install of Windows 10 Professional on a new SSD, same issue occurring. Tested DDR4 RAM, no errors. Crashes do appear to be consistent with the EseDiskFlushConsistency error.

Running Intel i7-6770k, 16gb DDR3, m.2 nvme ssd, asus mobo

Sunday, January 21, 2018 1:05 PM

I have this exact same issue with Overwatch, similar specs. Any fixes?

Monday, January 22, 2018 7:52 PM

Same problem here. No games installed, just viewing youtube.

Every X minutes sound drops, and every time there is a EseDiskFlushConsistency entry in the log files.

Really annoying, if it doesn't get fixed I will have to say goodbye to Windows 10.

Monday, January 22, 2018 9:44 PM

Hi there,

I have a similar issue. It always says in the protocol =

svchost (or taskhostw, or DllHost, etc.) (3068,G,50) Das Beta-Feature "EseDiskFlushConsistency" ist in ESENT aufgrund der Einstellungen 0x800000 für den Beta-Modus aktiviert.

Each time, it happened when I was playing TW3 (donot play currently other game), but until now it was only the game which had crashed.

Tonight, for the first time, it crashes the whole PC.

And yes I run a german 2 years old PC with W10 x64 1709 build.

Tuesday, January 23, 2018 6:34 AM

I get the same issue, but it manifests itself when I try to BitLocker my C drive. It started off by BitLocker being suspended on C, which I then completely decrypted, but now it won’t let me BiLocker the drive at all now https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-security/windows-10-bitlocker-cannot-be-enabledstarted/5cc6f789-e2d3-484c-9219-d65f05d601ae

Friday, January 26, 2018 5:51 PM

same issue here, unable to play any games without crashes - new wininstall

Asrock x370 Gaming K4

AMD Ryzen 1600

Glfares X 3200 MHZ DDR4

now windows error reports after game crashes

i get alot of these and dcom errors in the event viewer

You damn tootin'!

Monday, February 5, 2018 12:27 AM

I have this same issue in Windows 10 Pro v1709. Keeps crashing Elder Scrolls Online. Checked event viewer and it is the source of the crashes. Why in the world is Microsoft pushing beta features on users that are not even insiders? I sure hope I don't go to work on Monday and get reports of users' applications crashing on Windows 10 Enterprise due to this.

Having same problem.

If you people visit Device Manager > Disk Drives then Properties > Policies of each drive there is a thick box.

"Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing on this device"

However it is not recommended to turn off and not sure if related will test with them disabled and see the result.

Friday, February 9, 2018 10:30 PM

Didn't work for me. Still get several of these errors a second.

Saturday, February 10, 2018 11:17 PM | 1 vote

Me too. Anyone have any updates on these ESENT errors? I'm getting dozens and dozens of them daily, and they often correspond with programs glitching. I do audio/video work and 99% of the time when there's a glitch in playback, I have an ESENT message at the EXACT time it happened. Been watching for it for the last few weeks. Did not have this problem on Win7Pro.

Monday, February 12, 2018 3:26 AM

I'm having the issue as well. I discovered it after (finally) picking out a pattern of my game controller seemingly randomly freezing.

I use a DS4 (PS4 controller) to play Rocket League. Ever since a recent windows update (possibly 1709, possibly a subsequent update), my DS4 would consistently turn off (hangs/freezes actually) at what seemed random, but somewhat consistent intervals. After this happened enough times I finally realized it was always happening at exactly 41 minutes after any given hour.

When I trolled through the Event Viewer, I didn't see any correlation in the System logs, but in the Application logs I found this ESENT (916) error happening consistently at 41 minutes and 37 seconds after the hour. It actually happens a lot more frequently than that, but there's always a corresponding event for when my controller dies.

So... what the heck is this ESENT and how do we stop it?

Sunday, February 18, 2018 2:20 AM

Came to add a me too. Its only been a few days but every few mins my PC locks for about half a second before carrying on. Looking at the Event viewer this is the one that pops up when it happens. I am running a ryzen 1800x processor with 16gb of ram and SSD for windows with 100gb of space on there.

This can happen when I am just listening to youtube but I also have it happen when playing fallout 4 from a separate ssd drive that I keep for games. I have task manager open on a separate monitor and nothing spikes or drops on there.

svchost (2936,G,0) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency is enabled in ESENT due to the beta site mode settings 0x800000

I have 2x adata ssd drives 256gb and 2x seagate 2tb drives, none of them are in raid mode.

Tuesday, February 20, 2018 12:34 AM | 1 vote

I'm still reading through these replies. Is there a definitive solution yet?

Tuesday, February 20, 2018 5:16 PM | 1 vote

Same issue for me as well:

svchost (3968,G,0) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency is enabled in ESENT due to the beta site mode settings 0x800000

And no clue about what is it.

This message with "information" level is flooding my event viewer.

Saturday, February 24, 2018 9:59 PM | 1 vote

Came to say me too. Happens on average of 8 times a minute and all video games have been randomly crashing also since the update. This is horrible.

Sunday, February 25, 2018 5:04 PM | 1 vote

Exactly the same problem, point by point.

It's shameful, and terrible. It makes my admin account unusable.

I hope that Microsoft fixes this really soon, as it is a major issue.

Monday, February 26, 2018 6:26 PM

Log Name:      Application

Source:        ESENT

DllHost (11700,G,0) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency is enabled in ESENT due to the beta site mode settings 0x800000.

ESENT- The Extensible Storage Engine. It Is a Windows component:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg269259%28v=exchg.10%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

Some software installed on your PC uses ESENT API as a data storage. Probably the 1709 update forced ESENT logging.

Monday, March 5, 2018 8:38 PM

I think I might be onto something.

I used to have the issue frequently but, I had McAfee and Norton installed.

When I uninstalled McAfee the issue became less frequent.

My theory is that two virus protection softwares vying for control as the primary service could have played a part in the issue.

Or it could be specifically related to MacAfee

Hi Kelmen,

20180311 18:00 Time of note
Win 10 Pro 1709 16299.248
Device is up to date last checked 01:25
Gigabyte Ultra Motherboard and two 930Gb drives C: & D:
SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 128Gb memory stick /flash drive
My working files & folders are on the 128Gb Memory stick/flash drive 01-Jan-2018 to date
Pre 31-Dec-2017 working files & folders were on HP USB 2.0 64Gb memory stick /flash drive

I have been having random reboots for some time last year I was using a HP 64Gb USB 2.0 memory stick / flash drive

The "random re-boots" are without warning. I have used Recovery on several occassions to "Reset This PC"

I again started to do something end February 2018. I had various errors using Update & Security > Recovery
The error was - Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4041994) - Error 0x80070643
01-Mar-2018 I obtained a Win ISO.
PC was re-built from a Win-ISO image 01-Mar-2018 - my data was NOT kept so "clean install"

Prior to 10-Mar-2018 Reboots At least once once per day .. I have not noted the times

10-Mar-2018 PC Rebooted three times without warning - Using 128Gb memory stick

ESENT 916 errors prior to reboots ...

11-Mar-2018 PC Running 11 hours NO reboots - No memory sticks inserted

As an "oh by the way" I have been unable in Restart Options to "Schedule  A Time" as it is greyed out.
"Show More Notifications"  ... If you want to see more notifications about restarting, turn this on
It is "ON"

From reading the other comments to me the issue may be with any solid state drives be they the "main drive(s)" or USB ones.

I have a Win 10 Home (Up to Date 20180311 17:05) HP Pavilion 11-n083sa x360 PC "laptop" I may try using it for a day or so to see if it reboots when using a USB memory stick / flash drive.

Random re-boots for NO reason with warning are a MAJOR issue. I am considering abandoning Windows and moving LMDE Linux Mint Debian Edition

Is everyone in this thread using any / all of the following:

SSD Drives (Standard or NVMe) - If so, what brand?

DDR4 RAM

NVidia Video Card (if so, what model?)

Qualcomm Wireless Adapter (or Killer Networking Adapter)

USB Drive (Flash / External HDD or SSD) (if so, what brand)

Intel Processors - i7? i9? i5? Otherwise?

Just trying to find common links between all of us so maybe we can troubleshoot. It may be something only MS can fix in an update, or perhaps if it's something we could take up with the offending driver source. Maybe it's Samsung for all we know.....doubtful....haha.

My specs:

Intel i9 10 Core 3.3GHz
Samsung NVMe System Drive
Samsung 850 Pro Data Drives
Nvidia 1060 3GB
Qualcomm Wireless Adapter
DDR4 RAM
WD External USB 3.0 Drive

Wednesday, March 14, 2018 12:17 AM

I'm on a 1 week old fresh install of Windows 10 Pro on a new 500Gb SATA HDD. I've been having these "freezes" constantly  for the last few months and assumed it was a hard drive beginning to fail hence the new drive and fresh install of Win10. Still having the issue though. In the last 3 hours I've had about 20 or so with this same "svchost (3632,G,0) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency is enabled in ESENT due to the beta site mode settings 0x800000." as I see so many others complaining about when I did a Google search on it.

This event screws things up every time it happens while playing games or watching movies/videos.

Thursday, March 15, 2018 4:37 AM | 1 vote

I've been having this problem since late November. It has taken me a huge amount of time to land on ESENT as the problem. Right away I thought it was the video card. Upgraded and I continued to crash. I then reinstalled my drivers and continued to crash. Used the Windows restore tool, continued to crash. Completed a fresh install of windows and still continuing to crash. I've been all over the web trying to find a solution but I can't find anything anywhere. At this point, I figure if enough of us keep this alive it will become harder to ignore. At the very least Microsoft could acknowledged the problem and let us know they are looking into it.

Thursday, March 15, 2018 4:37 AM

im not exprt in any real sense, but from the my extensive reading of the reports both here and elsewhere (elsewhere including the "other problems"; which actually seem to be the same problem with wildly different symptoms, from simple periodic "harmless" freezing/extended stuttering, lag in edge browsers particularly during starting the app, to complete system crashes), it seem to me that AMD hardware (AMD chips of various architecture and also AMD video cards) and SSD drives of various brands, are the common denominators. all starting from the 1709 update, to today.
in fact, my problems were sorted until the march 13 cumulative update, when my system went back  to daily hard crashes with no error log other than the entirely unhelpful "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first" error log

Thursday, March 15, 2018 4:58 PM

I've got a possible solution for this that worked for me and may work for others.  I'm on a Surface Pro 4 but Windows v10 and had this exact same problem start to pop up in the event viewer just prior to my entire system slowly locking up and requiring a hard reset.  Ending up having to do a hard restart several times a day and that got old...fast.

Around the same time I was seeing the ESENT warning, I was also seeing a list of Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) errors like:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error creating the Shadow Copy Provider COM class with CLSID {3e02620c-e180-44f3-b154-2473646e4cb8}

Not always, but often.  So I researched the VSS errors and this lead me to this solution:
http://backupchain.com/How-to-fix-volume-shadow-copy-service-error-creating-the-shadow-copy-provider.html
Specifically deleting whatever second key exists here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VSS\Providers
in addition to the one named "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0".  Just click on the keys in the \Providers\ folder to view their names.  Again keep the "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0" key and trash the others (I had a Hyper-V one in there for example).  Then restart your computer.

That's it.  The Esent warnings stopped.  The VSS errors stopped.  My computer stopped crashing several times a day.  Hopefully this can help others banging their heads against the wall as I did.

Saturday, March 17, 2018 4:55 PM

"Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0"  is all I have in the provider folder. For me I get the error when trying to open/save in Photoshop also, brand new Logitech keyboard is playing up.

Yes using a 1 TB  SSD and an external Seagate USB drive on Dell XPS laptop Win 10.  Just tried disconnecting the external Seagate drive to see if this helps, with the problem. If it helps will respond back.

Not work for me bro. I'm afraid if there will be no fix, should i downgrade the os ?

Wednesday, March 21, 2018 6:10 PM

I have a Dell OptiPlex 9020 with two external hard drives and an external DVD. My older Western Digital external drive stopped functioning after the Windows 10 Build 1709 Windows OS Update. To recover files from it I had to use Recuva.

That being stated, I had left the drive attached to the USB. When I unplugged the drive from the system the "EseDiskFlushConsistency" messages were reduced by 50%.

This tells us the error is coming from the USB driver or controller for external hard drives.

Thursday, March 22, 2018 11:19 AM

I was getting these ESENT log entries also, and blue sceens about every 10 minutes.  Turn it off on all my drives and the messages have not gone away, but so far no blue screen.

Thursday, March 22, 2018 11:24 AM

Have the ESENT issue and blue screens, but no providers other than the MS one.

Saturday, March 24, 2018 7:53 AM

Let's go back to some previous suggestions.  When I dig into this ESENT issue I find Qualcom  at the base of the issue.  I'm tempted to disable it (I don't use or need WIFI) but you know how Windows is.  Wiggle one part and wall comes down. I'll let you know how that works.

The other thing I will agree on is AMD hardware, and now lately software.  I just changed to AMD processor - Ryzen 7 with a RX 580 graphics card.  Thoroughly underwhelmed.  In fact , this may not of been my brightest move, I purchased this setup/computer before.  Went to the Event log and there were so many Errors I  said no way.  Some errors had to do with AMD and Microsoft not handing off requests or fulfilling them.  The second time I went back and looked at another computer same specs and Event Viewer didn't have an error.  Of course I took that as a sign things were fixed.

So what do I think (not ready to say I know until I"m sure)?  Qualcomm seems most certain, AMD has a whole bunch of problems, the least of which is this ESENT issue. Sending an email off to AMD and one to Best Buy.

More will be revealed.

i have an I7-7700 Cpu, with 16 Gb Corsair DDR4, an H270 asrock motherboard, which has TWO intel network adaptater (not qualcomm), my Cpu is intel not AMD, and i have the same issues as all of you guys.

i use my computer for Pro Audio/Video purpose and it's a nightmare.

my computer freeze all the time with one of my video software (at least, it doesn't crash the computer), i have freeze during files transfer between my NAS and internal hard-drive. i have freeze sometimes while acceding my onedrive account (local) or one of my SSD. Freeze in my video software, Random Cpu Picks in my Music software (cubase) etc etc... the most anoying is the freeze or crash of the software during video editing. it drive me nuts, and each time when it's happen, there is this error at the same time which appears in the log. i'm very very tired !

The same here: mass EseDiskFlushConsistency entries in EventLog, with some directly preceding Win10 crashes / BSODs that mostly refer to NTOSKRNL.EXE only (so very little to analyse using WinDBG).

My PC: HP Omen 870-095na, CPU i5 6400, 2 x 8GB RAM (DDR4), AMD RadeOn R9 380, SATA SSD Samsung Pro 850,  WD 1 TB & 2 TB, Windows 10 1709 fully up to date. I'm fairly confident that hardware is fine - run MemTests in the past.

I have just checked my Event Viewer as I have been experiencing strange behaviour from my PC. Some of my games have began stuttering. The FPS seems to drop down to around 57fps randomly. I thought it was my gpu drivers so I have been trying different drivers but they do not make a difference. However,  when I quit my game immediately after getting a stutter and switch to Event Viewer, the following error can be seem within the same time frame as the game stutter (just for reference for anyone out there this happens in Watch Dogs, Watch Dogs 2, FFXV so its not just one game. I seem to be getting these quite regularly as well:

Same here, I get huge FPS drops, im usually around 120 and then I drop to like 20 on a GTX 980 8gb / i7 6700 @ 4.2 in league or in diablo3.

When we received the same ESENT errors, we noticed the local network latency was slow.  So we disabled the onboard network card, and installed a server grade Intel network card.  The latency is gone, and MOST of the ESENT errors have disappeared.

So far it is looking good.

Wednesday, March 28, 2018 3:34 PM

Hmmmm, I wonder If you disable the network card will the errors go away

have to test I guess

thanks

Thursday, March 29, 2018 1:58 PM

I wonder if this new feature has anything to do with the Spectre or Meltdown issues.

Perhaps its flushing out disk cache at random times?

Thoughts?

I have Microsoft Word freeze on me for a while now. Makes this darn thing basically useless. Am now switching to Google Docs.

Researching this I noticed this ESENT EseDiskFlushConsistency  and reached here.

FWIIW I'm on a virtual machine, VMWare Workstation 14 Pro.

I have the messages but not the lag but my logs are nearly empty because I clear them for work.

Maybe clear your logs?

I may have some good news. Looking everywhere for hints on to what is causing this issue, along with a solution to the crashes I noticed my disk usage in the task manager hitting 99%. Of course I became very curious about this as a lot of the problem with this ESENT situation seems linked to hard drives...at least that is where my investigation has taken me. Anyway, to the point, it seems a process called Superfetch was causing the problem. A bit of research on that and I found it is a feature of Windows that attempts to look for patterns in your computer use and then pre-loads programs. As such, I loaded the list of services in windows and shutdown Superfetch and disabled its auto run status. Two evenings of heavy gaming on ESO and I've yet to have any crashes. I'm still seeing the ESENT in the log, but my computer seems to be much happier. Likely this has reduced strain on my comp which may be helping to prevent crashing when the ESENT error runs. Anyway, give it a shot. I hope it helps. I'll keep you all updated if my comp continues to perform well.

Sunday, April 1, 2018 12:41 PM

doesnt work for me, tried everything in this post. every tip!
Got the ESENT Failure 3 months now. No Solution yet.

- Reset Windows

  • All new Drivers

- Fortnite

  • PUBG
  • Counter Strike
  • Metin2
  • FIFA 18
  • CABAL

  • Kingdom Come
    ... and many more.

Thanks Microsoft!
Paying shit for nothing, paying for games that dont work cause of your awesome work.

Well I had a good run. Just crashed again after 2 1/2 days of no crashes. This tip may help, but as I feared it doesn't stop the problem. I'll keep looking.

Good day!

In the organization of the only monoblocks Acer Z1-623 windows 10.

They have installed an SSD Samsung 850 Evo Sata III MZ-75E250BW.

There is no problem on other computers with Windows 10.

I see that several people wrote that they installed this SSD.

Desktop crash several times a day. Only rebooting the button helps.

I'll try to update the firmware of the SSD.

Monday, April 2, 2018 8:18 AM

Good call re: SSD - mine's also SAMSUNG 850, but Pro.

This chaps has also SAMSUNG SSD (and generates very same BSOD, referring to ntoskrnl.exe+175510):

Tuesday, April 3, 2018 4:19 PM

Just started getting this EseDiskFlushConsistency since Friday March 30th 2018 in the windows logs, and it is around the time of video card blackouts watching YouTube videos and steam gaming.

What changed since the time the system was fine? Last week, I had some write errors, so I installed IntelSSD Toolbox to check the drive's health. I also clicked the "optimize" button in the IntelSSD Toolbox, which enables Trim + Trim scheduling.

I removed the IntellSSD Toolbox software and still eventually got the black screen problem and EseDiskFlushConsistency in the logs.

fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify responds with DisableDeleteNotify = 0, so Trim is still enabled.

I did some more reading elsewhere and saw some notes that this is caused by a network service "SmartByte Network Service" for Killer Network adapter. (I don't have that though) [You can find that info here https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/96786-esediskflushconsistency.html\]

Hrmmm....

So I loaded up 24 hour Nyan cat (giggle) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EErY75MXYXI and let it run fullscreen for about 30 minutes. No problem.

I yanked the network plug. Instant black screen.

Fantastic.
So is this some combined problem of Trim and Network?

Edit: Forgot to mention
I have an Intel NIC, Intel SSD and Radeon card.

CNA3 Certified :)

Friday, April 6, 2018 3:58 PM

Same SSD installed on my custom built rig. I've gone into disk optimization and disabled auto trim on both the SSD system drive and the HDD data/game drive. I don't know if this will help, but I am going to clear my event logs, reboot and kick off Sea of Thieves. So far, there seems to be about 10 minutes between the ESENT messages and the game freeze and subsequent display driver crash/recovery.

I'll report back with what I find. Hopefully we're digging the right hole.

Saturday, April 7, 2018 9:28 PM

My audio has been ruined since November....I keep rolling back my system image, I try to disable things, I think I fix it, then Windows does an update and the problem returns....

Here is my log of temp fixes that have worked until MS updates and screws it up again.

Sorry, it's kind of cheesy, but I am a desperate amateur with a computer system that does not work.   (I wish I could disable Windows updates forever)

Go into "services"

--Disable everything from Dell

--Put Oculus settings to manual, since that is that is the only thing I installed.

--Windows recently updated, look at “event viewer” to see what is going on.

--Noticed that Realtek driver was set to 24bit 48khz, where all other audio was 16bit 48hz.  Keep them all in sync.

--Disabled all audio drivers except Focusrite and Realtek

--Turned off Bluetooth

--Turned off wifi

--Update flash ( this fixed the browser youtube audio playback until the next update)

--Google Chrome was using the Rocksmith cable as the microphone, undo this (go into advanced/privacy/content settings)

I think I've admitted defeat on this issue.

I've seen people have this issue with SSDs, HDDs, new custom builds, old Dells, AMD Graphics or NVidia Graphics, Intel and AMD Processors, Qualcomm wireless adapters and NON-Qualcomm wireless adapters...really any combination you can imagine.

So what's the ONE common thread that ALL of us have? Build 1709. .

That's really it. If you're here it means you've been searching all over the internet for this issue and probably have seen what I've seen - a million different hotfixes that end up to be cold, and people with every type of computer configuration imaginable. I really just think it's an issue with Windows.

Thursday, April 12, 2018 6:44 PM

Agreed, cannot really figure this out myself.

Another observation I have is this: I do notice that some apps (Task Manager, Explorer, Garmin Background service etc.) randomly crash - but also recover. With each of these occurrences however there's preceding EseDiskFlushConsistency entry in EventLog.

What the heck is EseDiskFlushConsistency?

I have a feeling - and that's just my theory, of course - that my OS crashes happen when the same occurs for services associated with OS Kernel.

Friday, April 13, 2018 2:18 PM

We are seeing this too.  Just updated to Fall Creators on two machines and after some updates, we see lockups and these logged just before lockups.

Saturday, April 14, 2018 12:04 PM

Hello,

I'm seeing this too right after a fresh install of windows10. The system freezes for a few seconds with the ESENT entry in the logs. Sometimes happens every few minutes and sometimes once an hour.. driving me crazy!

Already tried disabling VSS and a fresh reinstall.

Thursday, April 26, 2018 6:13 AM

Anyone having any luck on this problem? I created a post on the Windows 10 site and the best I've gotten so far is to reinstall Windows. I of course proceeded only to find that the problem perisisted through a clean reinstall of windows. If you want to track my progress on the other side you can view it at:

I can confirm reinstall doesnt fix the issue. Newest update didnt fix it either.

Any help MS?!

I can't say that this will eliminate your EseDiskFlushConsistency problem, however my Surface Pro 3 was logging hundreds of the Windows Logs, Application, Information, ESENT 916 events per hour, and I was able to reduce that number to one or two events an hour.  I hope someone more knowledgeable of the system is able to understand why this helps and provide a more complete solution.  To mitigate the problem, I cleaned up a couple of old and invalid index locations and then used the Troubleshooting Search and Index tool to automatically correct errors in the index database.  (Note: The Index is a necessary function and one should consider the maxim "first, do no harm" when contemplating changes).

To access indexing options...

Right-click the Windows Icon to access the pop-up menu

Click [Settings] in the menu which opens Windows Settings

In the [Find a setting] search box, type (without quotes) "control panel" and click [Control Panel] in the results.

In the Control Panel change the [View By:] from [Category] to either [Icon] option and open the indexing options panel by clicking the [Indexing Options] icon.

To review and modify the index (following the above steps)...

In the Indexing Options panel, click the [Modify] button at the bottom to open the Index Locations panel

Click [Show all locations] to show hidden locations in the upper box.

(Note: On my computer, I had two invalid or incorrect locations, one listed started "CSC:// ... " and I believe I knew it was invalid by hovering the cursor over the location and reading the popup).

To eliminate an indexed location, uncheck the box next to it.  (Note, that like nested folders, if you uncheck a parent folder, you also uncheck all children folders.  Similarly, checking a parent folder selects the folder and all children folders as well.

After reviewing and possibly modifying the indexed locations, click [OK] to close the dialog box and complete the changes (select [Cancel] to exit without making changes).  This will return you to the parent Indexing Options dialog box.

To launch the Troubleshoot Search and Index  troubleshooter (following the above steps)...

In the Indexing Options dialog box, click [Advanced] to open the Advanced Options dialog box.

In the Troubleshooting section, click the underlined "Troubleshoot search and indexing" to open the troubleshooter.

When the troubleshooter form asks "What problems do you notice" appears and prompts you to "Select all that apply," click to select only the one that indicates that search or index is slowing down the computer and then click [Next] to troubleshoot for any problems.

(Note: the troubleshooter may prompt you to accept repairs or simply indicate that the corrupted index data has been repaired.)

When complete, close the troubleshooter and click the [Rebuild] button to rebuild the index.  This process will take some time, but runs in the background, so you can close the Advanced dialog box and use the computer as normal until the index has been rebuilt.  Once rebuilt, reboot your computer.

After rebooting my Surface no longer appears to be bogged down, or freeze, and the number of events per hour dropped from approximately 150 to one or two per hour.  Hopefully this will be successful for you too.

Same question as you.
I really want to know how to fix this.

Tuesday, May 8, 2018 11:15 AM

I have had this problem also. The desktop would pause randomly for a second and then catch up, the same when streaming or watching video. Also gaming was affected, fps dropping from the high 100's down to 50 and backup again for no apparent reason causing the game to momentarily lag.

Having narrowed it down to this issue I thought it must have something to do with the disc caching. The one and only thing I have done on my SSD's is disable "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" for C:\ only (and any other SSD's). That's it, I was going to do Superfetch as well, but (fingers crossed) for 4 days now I have had no stutters or lags relating to EseDiskFlushConsistency (even though it's still flagged in event viewer). This may not be the ultimate fix for everyone, but it certainly did the trick (so far) for me.

Friday, May 11, 2018 6:17 AM

I hate to say it but this solution didn't fix it for me. Any other ideas?

Monday, May 14, 2018 8:27 PM

Same problem here.  Happens on Fallout 4 startup...

Im using windows version 1803 (OS build 17134.48)

Nvidia GTX960 OC

i5-4690

Im running the game on my second drive (HDD). My main drive is a Samsung SSD.

My first question is for everyone experiencing this issue. It hasn't been asked by Microsoft that I can see so here goes.

how many of us experiencing this problem have an "Insider Preview" installed on the system having this ongoing and recurring problem? Does everybody get that the previews are beta versions? That they have new features and processes that are being developed and tested?

I apologize if my reply sounds rude but... We all do have to acknowledge that we are knowingly installing beta pre-release software that has the "Potential" to damage our system... Etc...

Every instance I have of this begins with the process or the application being referred to...

CCleaner64 (10268,G,98) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency
taskhostw (6424,G,98) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency
DllHost (7164,G,98) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency
svchost (1400,G,98) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency
SettingSyncHost (9452,G,98) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency
RemindersServer (1496,G,98) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency

The first number is the PID (Process Identifier) and I haven't figure out what the "G" or the "98" refer too.

Don't get me wrong... I experience the brief hangs an stalls as well. But that is the price you pay when you run pre-release software... Especially when it's as complex an operating system as Windows.

I am also quite sure that Microsoft appreciates all the investigating and troubleshooting and "Figuring Outing" that we do for them :)

Tuesday, May 15, 2018 10:45 PM

I doubt any of the above users are using beta versions of windows.

I'm certainly not and still have my PC crashing and freezing twice a day, even when im not using it and it's sitting idle.

Thursday, May 17, 2018 4:32 PM

Don't know if this will help anyone else, but I too had been plagued by random lock-ups with the "EseDiskFlushConsistency" entry in Event Viewer at right around the same time.  By chance, one time when it happened, I had the Task Manager up and saw a huge spike with "dell supportassist".  I've deleted and uninstalled all traces of "dell supportassist" and have since not had any lock-ups.  Still getting the "EseDiskFlushConsistency" logs, but who cares . . . no more lockups! :)

Friday, May 25, 2018 6:43 AM

So I've noticed a behavior that may lead to some troubleshooting. It seems that when my computer locks up that I can insert a USB drive and it will break whatever process is causing the lockup. This works about 70% of the time for me. It has made my computer a bit more usable, all be it very annoying to use. That said, I'm hoping to see if this "solution" works for others and if we can find a common pattern perhaps it will help with troubleshooting. Let me know what you all find.

Thursday, May 31, 2018 6:17 PM

I don't think there are any consistent patterns to this from what I've read and compared to my situation.  I JUST started having this issue yesterday and my situation doesn't seem to match anyone else's who has posted in this thread.

Core i7-3700k CPU, 16 GB DDR3 RAM, NOT an SSD.

I've been running 1709 fine on many computers since it came out with no issues.  Several of my PC's, including the one now exhibiting this issue, are now even on 1803 and have been running fine with that up to now.  My main PC JUST started having this issue YESTERDAY.

I don't get lock ups or random reboots or anything like that.  My PC performance just slowed to a crawl. My hard drive now spins constantly.  Looking at the Disk usage in Task Manager, the disk is ALWAYS running with at least a few % of activity (sometimes it spikes to 100% for a couple minutes too, but that's not constant, but there is ALWAYS some level of disk activity).  Looking at Event Viewer, I am flooded with a constant stream these EseDiskFlushConsistency "info" messages, like several EVERY SECOND.

Friday, June 8, 2018 3:54 PM

I'm getting this with Premiere Pro CC 2018 V12. The ESENT issue seems to crash Pr without warning.

New PC build : Ryzen 7 8 core, Geforce GTX 1070TI, 32GB RAM, Samsung SSD on windows 10.

Anyone got a solution?

Thursday, June 14, 2018 12:57 AM

I too am getting this error, several times an hour - first noticed it when my PC seems to have restarted itself.

I am using w10 v1803

Thursday, June 14, 2018 7:35 PM

Windows 10 Pro 1803 getting this error all the time.  I guess still no solution?

Friday, June 29, 2018 4:01 PM

Hello,

I dont know that much of this issue ass u guys, but i have the same stupid problem "DllHost (7448,G,98) La característica beta EseDiskFlushConsistency está habilitada en ESENT debido a la configuración de modo del sitio beta 0x800000 "  ( Is in spanish i know but the same ), but in my case the program doesn't open at all, just trows me that error, the program i've installed was a software to scan vehicules... i dont know if these will help you guys but i installed on a notebook HP Windows 10 with no updates at all, i diseble them long time ago.. i hope u guys can find a fix !

Sunday, July 8, 2018 6:37 PM

Hey Guys, just to give a few more infos.

I have a win10 without updates, some semi-freezes (blackscreen) that can be solved by pressing the on/off button to go into hibernate. most times.

- no win updates

- ESENT error occuring from time to time, but not sure if connected to the freezes

- SSD (samsung evo 850)

Saturday, July 28, 2018 12:10 PM

FOUND A SOLUTION for me.

opened procmon.exe and saw, what happened: CTFMON.EXE was spamming my system with useless calls.

The oldfashioned exe is relicted and is part of TableInputService

Deaktivation, closing, and restart (order) is my personal solution of that.

Otherwise, try to diagnose with procmon.exe and the timestamp the service, which is causing the errors on your system, too.

Since deaktivation of that crap, no more freezes, drops and lags of my whole system. Was close to despair.

Sunday, July 29, 2018 9:42 PM | 1 vote

new solution (for my case)

found out, that I deinstalled several win10 systeme apps by win10privcy.

reinstallation with Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

and my system do not lag anymore while trying to access several erased registry keys by ctfmon.exe and taskhostw.exe (inputapp in my case).

System is not lagging anymore. My fault

edit: COMING BACK WITH ERRORS

MICROSOFT FIX THIS BUG!

64000 events in 0.1 Seconds for registry calls

look in my zip, see and feel the error you will fix, soon, after the summer break!!

Hey Mate

I finally think I found the answer to this.

I tried updating all drivers, reinstalling Windows, nothing helped.

It's the current OS version that matters.
You need to reinstall windows to a earlier OS version than 1709. It seems like 1709 or newer version is having a lot of bugs.

I rolled back to 1703, and I have been on for more than 1h without Freezes (new record).

This worked for me too until microsoft decided to force update me every 2 weeks onto 1803

Wednesday, August 8, 2018 7:40 PM

Having the same issue. Games are unplayable, crashing all the time. On windows 10 version 1803.

As mentioned before, this might be an issue with auto-trimming SSD. I recently upgraded to a M.2 SSD (very high speed), but does not support TRIM.

Is windows trying to TRIM an SSD that does not support the feature causing a crash on applications??

Add me to the list of people having issues with this.

Same story as the others. Games/menus lagging with sound. It's now 30 seconds or so with nothing. Then if I alt-tab away and go back sometimes they start back up. Sometimes they don't.

Sunday, August 12, 2018 8:46 AM

The ESENT recorded the following event over 800 times in 7 minutes earlier this evening. Almost 700 times in just 2 minutes.

Event ID 916

"svchost (2292,G,98) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency is enabled in ESENT due to the beta site mode settings 0x800000."

In all the event has been logged over 1800 times in the last 45 days. None of the links provided or the posts listed as "answers" provide anything resembling a fix. Not even a fart in the direction of a fix. Please try to help us out. This error has turned my girlfriends laptop into a useless paperweight.

Thank you

Me too (TM).

I am chasing an "outlook stops receiving mail and needs to be restarted" bug and found this error when i am looking through the logs at the exact same time. The machine is 1709.

However in my case I think its a red herring, because many machines on site here all have the esent error message in the event log and not all have the outlook failing to receive mail problem (most machines are running fine with this error).

On the reddit thread, people are all saying they get the error like clockwork, once an hour. In that case I would check all the scheduled tasks, including and especially the microsoft ones.

Just posting here to get replies and see if anyone does figure it out. I get the feeling that this error is somewhat harmless and being blamed for a lot of stuff. For instance my computer 1803 has this error a few times an hour and I have no problems with the computer (Besides normal windows 10 annoyances)

I am just concerned because it says "beta features" of which we shouldn't have any in production. Someone from microsoft should explain what the heck this is and what the error means specifically. Some programmer programmed it, so someone should be able parse it!

This problem is NOT "harmless".  Take a look at the hundreds if NOT thousands of Application "Information" warnings about this event.  Once the warnings are issued over and over again you will see "Session "Circular Kernel Context Logger" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188".

Upon this particular error the entire system stalls (Edge, File Explorer, others...).

This is one of the saddest fielding's of problems to the public for resolution I have ever seen from MS.

I am NOT a gamer so tolerance is easy.  However, this type of support and product life-cycle support is indicative of the H1-B employee base (low wage workers) MS has chosen for their staff.  If it can't be done on the "cloud" by scripting it is NOT worth approaching a fix.

Microsoft simply has to admit fault and get this fixed.

Also experiencing "The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency is enabled in ESENT due to the beta site mode settings 0x800000".

OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
Version 10.0.17134 Build 17134
System Model HP EliteBook 840 G1

SSD

Initially noticed the problem after a recent Windows Reset and Skype for Business was re-connecting every 15-30 minutes. After checking Event Viewer, I notice that the issue in Skype for Business is happening exactly when the "EseDiskFlushConsistency" occurs in Event Viewer.

Has there been any response from MS on this issue???

Wednesday, August 29, 2018 3:42 PM

Another one to add to the list on a new build
WD SDD
ASRock H370 Mobo
I5 8500
New Install on Win10 (1803)
Latest drivers and FW updates applied.

Hourly it seems the judder in games/streams/audio/video for 10-15 seconds, when esent events occur
Irregular restarts even when device under low load (overnight left on) or high load (gaming), can be 3 hours/5 hours between, but it happens.
ESENT events each hour.

Hey all, also adding my specs related to this error. I have been running into many blue screens for all sorts of reasons even after updating my BIOS and a fresh installation of Windows. Have now installed Windows 10 Pro, dropped automatic updates and the system is more stable, although I'm now getting plenty of this error and it generally happens when a Google Chrome page crashes (Aw Snap popping up very frequently).

Been on live chat to a Microsoft support representative for four hours who essentially looked at my dumps and then remote controlled my PC and just downloaded the ISO and told me to reinstall. (I could have done that in an eighth of the time if they had just tole me to lol??)

Upgraded within the past month or so to:

Mobo: Asus Z370 PRIME A

i7 8700k

16GB Vengeance Pro RGB 3200Mhz RAM

Samsung 970 M.2 SSD (although I was encountering many blue screens before the addition of this)

Been running Nvidia 970 GPU the whole time

All components stress tested and diagnosed with various tools for errors, and absolutely nothing pops up.

Truly poor from Microsoft here. I have my suspicions with the Spectre/Meltdown patches related to these builds.

Cheers

**UPDATE: After resinalling Windows once again and encountering WHEA Error 19 over and over and over again alongside the error found in this thread, I found that my CPU was becoming unstable and inducing Blue Screens because of Windows power settings forcing the clock speed and voltage of the CPU down when the system is not under load, essentially undervolting the CPU to instability (as low as 0.8Ghz). SOLUTION FOR ME was to manually set my CPU voltage and clock speed to either close to its max turbo boost or above (I didn't try the standard clock), DISABLE Intel SpeedStep in the BIOS and finally set my Windows Power Plan to High Performance. Anything to force the clock speed to be reasonably high and static has fixed my problem.

I am also bothered with this problem.
Sometimes my PC stops working for a couple of seconds - everything halts, and yes it is 1:1 related to the ESENT EseDiskFlushConsistency event!
I have no overclocking, don't play games, I use Internet and Excel most of the time (hey, it is my work computer!).
It may be "harmless" but it utterly annoying! Sometimes the keyboard is sill quickly repeating the last letter I entered. And when someone comes into my office and I want to hide a sensitive screen (yah, it happens) then I had it a few times that the screen froze for a couple of seconds! Oh no!

Utterly annoying and the most annoying it the total lack of decent response from MS! MS should be able to tell us how disable the beta software and stop our problems - complaints are all over the Internet and apparently it is not an isolated problem.

Please Microsoft, HELP US!!!!!!

And Microsoft does nothing.  Nothing.   Always nothing.  Months of nothing.

Hello

Has anybody opened a support case on this issue? If so let me know the number of the support case.

have you tried the RS5 Preview releases to see if the issue still happens?

I have a case number 1441905473.  Despite over 12,000 people liking your post in under 24 hours, the rep told me Microsoft has no record that this is an "emerging issue" and wants me to start trouble shooting by deactivating services in msconfig.

Sunday, September 23, 2018 3:36 PM

Hey again...

For me it helped, after finding out, that my OS was installed under old standards (MBR-standards),

to change my OS (Windows 10) into GPT-standarizated format.

Therefore I used the (pretty cool) tool "mbr2gpt" offline under the prompt.

I also checked out, if the BIOS and motherboard is set to provide UEFI/GPT.

(my Asrock uses CSM as option: disabled allows UEFI stuff)

But for first, you should check out, if it is already the case.

Go to the diskproperties of your windows 10 installation-disk or partition, and go to the tab hardware and klick the Windows 10-installation-disk twice. After opening the properties-window, go to volumes and refresh. The list shows also partition styles.. If there is MBR, it may be outdated.

Therefore the new tool mbr2gpt helps out, its already in your system32 folder and runs offline.

After doing this, I haven't seen any problems after restarting the system completetly again. Before, I had no issues when I waked up from suspend to ram, but after full restarting, the error (also esent error) came back. The esent error was not the problem btw (in my case) , because it still appears. I found out that there was the ctfmon.exe and taskhostw.exe, which caused errors by calling hundreds of registry folders in between parts of seconds. I updated my SSD firmware, but I think, Windows 10 runs more safely under GPT standard and the problem was the not existing uefi support for my bios and hardware stuff.

Tell me, if you, who have these problems with HW-freezes, have a Win10 installation under MBR, or if I am an individual case.

Another one here, I have build 1803 and I have issues with games just shutting down, no blue screens, nothing, just drops back to Windows.  I can't believe (well, I guess I really can...) that this hasn't been addressed by Microsoft yet.  What is the point of these forums if you can't even get someone from MS to reply???

Saturday, November 3, 2018 9:24 PM

same here. i cannot play prepar3d no more.

i hope there is a way to go back to 1703

Saturday, November 10, 2018 12:16 PM

Just passing by to add a "me too".

Sunday, November 11, 2018 7:06 AM

me too :-(

every few months i check if this isssue is solved. nope

in my case with ASUS K550VKX penttium i7 7700 with 1GB SSD 16GB RAM

version is windows home 1803 build 17134.376

my laptop just freeze for a while (and in the registry ESENT events are reported)

closing the lid and reopen and login gives me the control again

the ESENT errors reported are the mentioned ones

the sad thing is about Microsoft not suggesting something like : "remove this registry entry" or similar

thanks folks

Friday, November 16, 2018 7:26 PM

HEY FOLKS!

try to disconnect the bigger HDMI devices like TV or something elses,

and report soon!

Sunday, November 18, 2018 1:53 PM

Gregor13187, have you found something?

I have seen behavior pointing in that same direction: When i'm at work connected via a HP docking station having 2 HDMI monitors connected to the station, i get no "ESSENT" lockups what so ever.

When i'm at home,  and have the same laptop connected with one HDMI and VGA monitor directly to the laptop, I get them all the time.

I have no clue why that is and i'm not any closer to having a resolution...

Howdy, First time poster here!

Just started having issues with this, I'll start off by saying I'm not a pro. I have some programming experience, from years ago, I am generally a pretty good toubleshooter. But not a professional. Just a pissed off layman.

Check to see if you are having issues with any Coms or DistributedComs in the Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System log. I noticed several CLSID and APPID Registry keys were having issues repeatedly with permissions, usually occuring no more than 120 seconds before freezing up my pc entirely. The freezing coincides with the esediskflushconsistency ESSENT event, but it really is only the victim of the real errors caused by these coms errors. There also seems to be some 'sub-class' user that I cannot select as a user to allow permissions; SID S-1-5-19 and others.

My solution? Hack and slash. I know what I need. What I need is less than what Microsoft wants to give as a baseline. I fully deleted the Registry Keys associated with the Coms failures. Issues all gone. New issues yes. But minor. I am on that pc right now.

New VSS error, it seemed to be the thing triggering the old registry keys. It has only triggered once in the 8 hrs since my hack job. No freezing. Excellent performance. But Windows OS is cuckolded. No windows buttons work, or start button. I ctrl+alt+del to access to network, power options, etc.

All games, apps, browsers, and antivirus programs seem to be working. Right click on Start button works for those options.

There was some graphical aspect of this I was not able to pin down. Lots of flickering before of icons, etc. Browsers, too. PC usually froze while streaming or playing video. All gone now.

Definitely should be better fixes out there. I still have ESSENT esediskflushconsistency events, but only about 1-2 an hour and no freezing. I don't even notice it anymore. It may not be a well optimized service, but may only have reacted to the real fark up. Look for a 10016 event in the Systems, followed by a 916 event in the Applications. Both in Windows logs, obviously.

I'll keep you posted if she all goes south from here. But to me a slightly ramshackle barebones OS is better than my PC always freezing within 20 minutes of me turning it on.

All stemmed from messed up permissions, an issue I noticed years ago on an older PC I upped from Win 7 to Win 10. Then it wouldn't let me access any of the files on my computer and I had to manually assert myself, the admin, as owner of the programs. Now with the addition of these sub-user classes they seemed to have even fudged it up further. Because I have found no way to grant permissions to these 'lower entities' or get the registry editor to acknowledge their existence.

I'm thinking the VSS service is used by S-1-5-19 and others, and the registry keys simply will not allow this mystery user access.

Friday, November 30, 2018 9:56 AM

Same error on my PC since 3 days, it was OK before that and I didn't installed anything new. I'm on W10 1803, and my comptuer use i5 2500k @4,5Ghz (stable since years), 16 Gb DDR3 and RX480 8Gb graphic card, with 2 SSD and a HDD.

I discovered the errors in the logs after having lots of high ping or disconnect playing ESO, at random intervals.

I've tried to disable my network card (I play ESO with wired connection to my modem) and use my mobile as an access point in USB and didn't get any disconnection. So the problem for me is tied to my realtek network card. I've updated the card drivers but it doesn't helped.

I don't know what changed in my computer, perhaps a windows software update ? I've got some updates on MS Store preinstalled apps.

Not a real solution, but you can see which process causes the Disk Flushes by looking at the numbers after the process. I didn't have as big of an issue than some guys here, but games usually froze for 50ish ms whenever DllHost caused a disk flush.

I'm pretty sure the first number after the process name (like DllHost (3900,G,98) The beta feature EseDiskFlushConsistency is enabled in ESENT due to the beta site mode settings 0x800000.) is the process id PID (3900 in this case) for the process that caused the flush. I just looked up the process with that PID in Task Manager under Details tab and just straight up killed it. You can even see the service tied to the process by right clicking the process -> go to service and find the highlighted service. For me though, it appeared the particular DllHost process was tied to no service so I just killed it. Looking at the svchost events I have in my log, seems like some of them are caused UsoSvc Update Orchestrator Service with most of them caused by DPS Diagnostics Policy Service.

You guys could try killing the process/stopping the service that's causing issues and see if that helps.

Another one joining the flock of this ESE issue.

I have a question about the actual event log wording "due to the beta site mode settings" now what does that mean? I would think it means that you have allowed beta testing to happen on your device although I cannot find the settings for this Beta Site Mode.

Does anyone know if there is a place in windows to access these settings?

Sunday, December 16, 2018 9:32 PM

Note that ESE is nearly certainly Window's Extensible Storage Engine as described in Extensible Storage Engine. Note that ESE exists in the esent.dll library and that is probably why ESE is sometimes called ESENT, as in Extensible Storage Engine Managed Reference - Windows applications. Unless you are a programmer you won't understand most of that reference page but that should explain what ESENT is. That documentation says "To create an application with ESENT, you use the esent.dll DLL that is part of the Windows operating system".

ESE is a database program that has been a part of Windows for a long time. The Edge browser uses it to store a lot of data, and I do mean a lot and as far as I know Microsoft does not document any of that data.

If you search your AppData/Local subdirectories for files called "spartan.edb" then you should find some. Spartan is what Microsoft called Edge before it was released and edb is the extension typically used for ESE databases.

EseDiskFlushConsistency implies to me it is a performance improvement of some type but I agree that beta versions of software should not be released as a production version. I assume the setting is in the registry but I can't find it.

hi all.

it's now months i google around to check if any solution is found for this ESENT errors which freeze my asus k550v intel i7 7th gen geforce 950M and with 1 TB crucial SSD . nope. i'm pretty annoyed about this microsoft company which, apparently, ignore all these complains.

please Bill Gates give us a registry key to set to 0 (disable) or 1 (enable) this feature . Merry Xmas and a Happy EseDiskFlushConsistency year :-)

i really have enough. i keep freezing for this esent error

cant we have a class action for this ?

Monday, January 21, 2019 3:58 AM | 1 vote

January 20, 2018, the bug is still here. I can reproduce it within one minute.
Only solution that worked for me (and I tried everything!): revert to 1703, and prevent Windows from updating. This fixed the constant freezing.
Microsoft, you introduced this bug in 1709, time to fix it.
My HW: Z370, I7, 1070TI, SSD (no HDD)

Same problem here !

No information to resolve it for months. Why ?

Tuesday, February 26, 2019 6:14 PM | 1 vote

I had a weird issue with Farcry New Dawn that was causing some textures to not load, as well as crashing to desktop with this error.

The issue was fixed for me by stopping & setting superfecth to manual (via services.msc) and unticking "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" from the SSD drive (Samsung 850 EVO) and rebooting.

Monday, May 13, 2019 2:30 PM | 1 vote

It's been 2019. I came here to confirm problem persistence and microsoft ignorance. My games still crash while dozens of os' services work fine. Good job, ms, keep up.

Thursday, May 23, 2019 10:30 AM

Anyone else getting this issue coinciding with DOCKER crashing?

Sunday, July 21, 2019 2:59 AM

I'm not saying this is the solution to the problem, but I've been gaming for about an hour now without any crashes whereas before it was crashing about 5-10 minutes into the game.

If nothing else, this Superfetch thing definitely wasn't helping the problem, so I would recommend trying this for anybody that's having this problem.
