Changed Windows Password, SSMS login problems

Question

Wednesday, September 11, 2019 12:31 PM

SSMS 2012

Problem:  I changed my windows password today, now I am trying to login to SSMS with Windows Authentication. It gives me error message: Cannot Connect to the xxxxx server.  Additional Information: The target name is incorrect. Cannot generate SSPI context (Microsoft Sql Server).

How do I enter my new windows password into SSMS login window?

Thanks for your help.

Windows auth to SQL Server don't require a Password in SSMS.

After changing Windows password, have you Log-out and re-login on the Windows machine, so that you get a new Windows auth token?

Yes, I did.

Thanks.

The error "The target name is incorrect." is not related to your password change.

My two cents: Try to clear the cache and make sure you enter the new credentials in here, and also try restarting the machine once, and give it a shot. Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Credential Manager Hope this might solve the issue.

All,

Thanks for your kind replies and your help.  I changed my windows login password back to my old password.  I had to run some queries in SSMS.  I will change the password again on Friday, Sept 13, and give you an update.

After reading everyone's replies, my understanding is that I don't need to do anything on the SSMS side after my windows password is changed to new password? It picks up the new credentials ?

Thanks.

Exactly,

No change is required. You change the windows user password and login to Sql Server normally without problems.

Hi AIM28256,

>>Cannot Connect to the xxxxx server.  Additional Information: The target name is incorrect. Cannot generate SSPI context (Microsoft Sql Server).

I have test it in my machine. I can connect to the sql server without problems. It seems to be a issue of spn. Have you change the service account of sql server?
