Always On Licensing and it's Cost

Question

Tuesday, September 17, 2019 11:53 AM

Hello All,

We are planning to configure Always on, we need your help to let us know the best license which we can use with Optimal Cost. I get to know that we can use it for Enterprise Edition only, can you please confirm same?

We have 4 cores(8 Logical Processors) machine and planning to install SQL Server 2012. Do we need to purchase extra license for the Secondary node though we just need to fetch the reports from it?

We need list of the SQL server and their Edition on which we can configure Always on.

Regards,

Jiten Pansara

Here is a comparison sheet of SQL editions - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sql-server/sql-server-2017-editions

AlwaysON has two different high availability options – AlwaysOn Avalability Groups (or BAG in SQL Standard) and AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances.

For 2 nodes cluster and one database you can use BAG from SQL Standard.

If you need more db then use FCI (still can be SQL Standard) or AG (SQL Enterprise).

Here are some performance tests of both solutions:
