delete onmicrosoft.com

Question

My global administrator was created from gmail account. Now I created custom domain name and I would like remove onmicrosoft.com. Main reason for and what I don't understand is I use Azure AD domain services with custom external domain. I connected my on-prem domain controller but even establishing custom domain as "main" synchronised users still use *gmailonmicrosoft.com domain. What I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

You cannot remove the onmicrosoft.com domain but you can delegate admin credentials to another account. The onmicrosoft.com account is linked to your subscription and is created when you sign up for the service. It is a secondary domain that you have access to use, but you do not need to use it. You can change the email address manually in your on-premises environment by editing the user profiles, or if they are cloud users you can sign into either your Azure Active Directory or your Exchange Admin Center and change the email addresses there. (There's a good explanation in this thread.)

My example tenant has users both on my custom domain and on my onmicrosoft.com default domain.
