AD integration with Google Drive

Question

Wednesday, November 7, 2018 9:36 AM

We are a higher education institute which includes more than 5,000 students and several hundreds of faculty members. I would like to have your advice on a matter we've discussed on our last staff meeting.

Our user network based on Microsoft Active Directory as the main identity management tool, GPO's, patch management and so on. Our domain is also in Google (whole mail system of students and faculty members there), which provides us with an unlimited workspace in Google Drive because of our academic nature.

Home directories of users reside in our local NAS and we want to revoke this option. All our users have Gmail accounts and our AD is synced with Google. We would like to map users' home directories to Google drives through Active Directory in their Windows accounts as they log on seamlessly.

Is there a way you can help us with this? Or a third-party application that may solve the <g class="gr_ gr_103 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace" data-gr-id="103" id="103">problem ?</g>

Thank you in advance,

Firstly, i am not sure if it is even technically possible... but secondly you are talking about different authentication method. AD is NTLM / Kerbero and Google is i presume using SAML (or similar).

So you would need to have a some sort of federation of authentcation between your on prem AD to the cloud. Traditially it would be something like ADFS as a direct federation, or maybe even use Azure AD or Okta. Then you have to figure out how you are going to automatically configured the google drive application using Group Policy which probably does not even support GPO.

Or... you could use OneDrive for Business and have a full intergrated experience...

OR... you could use Workfolder and have a Google Drive experience without the need for any cloud based infrastructure.

Hi,

Based on my knowledge, there might be something incompatible with Google Drive.

However, you could try a similar application named OneDrive in Microsoft.

For detailed information upon OneDrive: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/what-is-onedrive-for-business-187f90af-056f-47c0-9656-cc0ddca7fdc2

Hope the information above can be helpful.
