Question

After running a Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 7 Pro, all of my network adapters (my onboard wired network plus several VPN adapters) give a code (56): Windows is still setting up the class configuration for this device.
Windows does not show any networks present. I have attempted to update the LAN driver. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall. I have rebooted. There is another computer in the office with identical specs that has already been updated to Windows 10, using the same network card, although the problem computer now has a newer driver.
I do not see this error, or even an acknowledgement that code 56 is a valid error, anywhere online. Can anyone offer any advice on this issue?

Hi,
First, you could run the network troubleshooter tool to check.
Then you could use network reset to reinstall network devices.
- Select the Start button, then select Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset.
- On the Network reset screen, select Reset now > Yes to confirm.
Wait for your PC to restart and see if that fixes the problem.
If two machines have same network driver, I consider that your system files could be damaged when you upgrade. You could perform an In-Place Upgrade to fix the system files.

Hope it will be helpful to you

Hi,
i also had the same issues when i was updating my wireless driver.
LAN was still working so i tried to reset my network.
After rebooting no network components were working anymore.
Ethernet controller is not recognizing the cable pluged in and there is no ethernet adapter but the device manager says its working.
My wireless adapter is still giving code 56 and i can not remove nor deinstall them. :(
Also tried to start in safe mode and remove them. Didn't work.
The weirdest thing is this Code 56, because there is no documentation about it.
Next step will be to do an in-place upgrade to repair it.
Any other ideas?
Update:
Did the In-Place Upgrade and it's still not working.

Hi,
Is there any further advice on this problem? I now have the same issue, it started yesterday with the Ethernet adaptor on my Lenova laptop. I read this article and tried the Network reset option but that disabled my WiFi adaptor as well! Both adaptors are showing the same message 'windows is still setting up the class configuration for this device (code 56)' (same as above). There is no information about this code. The Microsoft device adaptor error code list only goes to code 54.
Restarting the machine made no difference. There does not appear to have been a recent Windows update which could have destabilised the machine and I have not installed any new devices, apps or programs recently.
Thanks,

same here in place windows 10 upgrade, nic not working , rebooted, changed drivers, uninstalled, nothing works, any ideas?
oh tried troubleshooter as well
...
update, tried a 4g dongle and a Usb Ethernet, all the same error. so its deffo a windows issue. and not a drivers issue.
found the problem. if you have Cisco VPn Client on your machine when you are 8 or 8.1, then you upgrade you get this issue, you need to go to restore, revert back to windows 8 or 8.1, remove the cisco vpn client, and upgrade to windows 10 again, network will be back. :)

It's great that reverting back to Windows 8 and upgrading fixed the problem for you but my machine came factory installed with Windows 10 and other users here have reported that the Update in Place did not correct their problem. I also do not have a Cisco VPN client installed on my machine.
So it seems like there are different machine configurations all with the same problem but with potentially different resolutions.
To start with, can anyone explain what the Code 56 error 'Windows is still setting up the class configuration for this device' really means??? The Ethernet adaptor should not require new class setup because it clearly belongs to the Network Adaptor class. What is Windows 10 looking for to complete the adaptor installation?
There's no documentation anywhere for the code 56 error.

I had a similar problem but it happened after a windows upgrade feature was installed. In my case, uninstalling my Checkpoint VPN client and restarting immediately restored all my network adapters and they functioned normally. Maybe you can check if you have any similar application. I should also point out that when I had that error, only the checkpoint adapter was visible under the network adapter window all others were missing there but visible under device manager with the code 56 alert.

I had this issue with version 1709 initial release and I could not solve it till now. I uninstalled every piece of Checkpoint related software and all network adapters started to work.

I can confirm this was the fix for me as well.
You need to update your checkpoint client to the latest as older versions do not work with 1709.

Hi, Got the same issue on a Dell Latitude E5570 after an update to W10 1709. All my nework adapters including VPN clients virtual hosts and BT stopped working after restart, with the yellow triangle in device manager and the error code 56. Reinstalling adapter drivers or Network Reset did not help. Removing the Check Point VPN Client (v.98.60.810) solved the problem. Thanks a lot.

Restart and works!!!
I reinstall my VPN software and I´m working without any problem.

Thanks for hochrami.
I have exactly the same issue. After upgrading Windows 10 from ver 1703 to 1709 (OS Build 16299.125). All network adaptor showed "Yellow Exclamation mark", even Wireless adaptor has no "Yellow Exclamation mark". There is no network available.
At that moment, my CheckPoint VPN client version was 98.60.452.
