Question

All-
I am working with a Server 2003 domain (native) with XP SP2 clients. I have created a policy to implement My Documents redirection, and have a strange problem: An old policy, one that I only have the GUID for and that doesnt exist any more, is still applying to some of my clients (strangely, not all of them). In fact in some cases, this non-existent policy will apply to a client for a short while, and then suddenly will disappear. The non-existent policy is applying an invalid redirection path to the My Pictures folder, resulting in error logs being generated every 5 minutes on my domain controllers, as well as a few errors applying on my clients. What can I do to stop this non existent policy from applying?
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Hello K !
Have you tried to delete the profile of the user that has the ancient policy applied, and recreate a new one? Is the policy still applied? (It should not be anymore).
Have you checked on the %systemroot%\System32\ or %systemroot% of the computers that have this old GPO still applied, for any folder named GPO or something like that? It should be a hidden folder, so activate the "show hidden folders" and "show hidden system files" before checking. If exists, delete it and restart the computer.
Hope it helps, before going on restoring a GPO who knows from how much time ago. Not a good way to go there.
P.S. And yes, you can always enforce your new GPO and move it up on the "tree" so that the old ones become "obsolete".

Unfortunately I do not have a good means of acquiring a current userenv log file to review this for you. I can tell you this: it seemed that my problem was actually two fold: one being caused by My Documents Redirection through group policy, and the other being caused by Local Group Restriction group policy. I later found that the redirection problems actually stemmed from XP service pack 3: the fdeploy.dll file in service pack two does not verify connectivity to previous redirected paths before redirecting to the new path, while the sp3 dll file does verify connectivity. Thus, the best solution is to leave file paths available, apply a new redirection policy, and once all files have been successfully redirected, remove the old paths. In this way, you will not have to delete any profiles at all.
The second issue, where my domain controllers were logging events every five minutes was not related to my documents redirection policy, even though that did cause it to log events. This particular problem is due to me having local group restriction policies applied at the top of my domain. because they were applied at the top, the 'Domain Controllers' OU inherited the policy. this caused errors every time the domain controller attempted to apply policy to itself simply because domain controllers have no local groups for the policy to manage.
Please let me know if I can be of more assistance.

Hi K.Mortensen,
If the GPO is disabled or deleted but folder redirection is still in effect after a policy refresh, perform the following steps (if the GPO is still available):
1. Open the GPO.
2. Right-click the folder that was redirected, and then click Properties.
3. On the Settings tab, identify whether or not the Redirect the folder back to the local userprofile location when policy is removed option is selected.

Brent-
Thank you for the reply. My trouble at this point is that the GPO is not available anymore. I have been able to locate its directory from our backup system, but cannot find an easy, low risk way of making it available via GPMC so that I can edit it. Any other ideas are greatly appreciated.

Hi Mortensen,
In order to narrow down the issue, please provide the information below:
1. Please check if the deleted GPO is under Group Policy Objects in GPMC, even if Linked GPO has been deleted, you can still see it under Group Policy Objects.
2. Have you tried restoring default target location in the My Document Properties on XP computer?
Meanwhile, please try the following method:
1. In order to avoid directing to invalid path, you can change the Value data of My Pictures from invalid redirection path to correct path on the XP computer, navigate at** HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exploer\Shell Folders**
- One of the parts of the GPO is the GPT, which is responsible for storing the specific settings created within the GPO. The GPT is stored in the Policies subfolder, which is under the SYSVOL folder on each domain controller. To delete the specific GPT at %systemroot%\sysvol\sysvol\domainname\Policies
If the issue persists, please collect the relative error information in %Systemroot%\Debug\UserMode\Userenv.log file on client and paste it in the forum for furhter research.

1. The deleted GPO is not under Group Policy Objects in GPMC
2. I have tried to restore the default target location. I get mixed results. In some cases, I am simply unable to change it (not editable except through reg settings, which I would really like to avoid given that I have several thousand clients machines to work with). In other cases, it allows me to change it, and then policy reapplies, changing it back to the same bad settings.
3. I am confident this solution would work, but it doesnt seem like a good long term solution, and like I said, I would really like to avoid widespread reg editing if it is possible
4. I have reviewed the GPT file. There are two things notable about this file:
- it wasnt on any of the domain controllers when I first noticed the issue (nor was the folder with the corresponding GUID). The only reason that I am able to review it now is because I restored the folder via our backup system.
- the GPT file contains only two settings under [General]: version, and displayName. no actual settings appear to be defined. However, if I go further into the path (..\Policies\GUID\User\Documents & Settings) there is a file called 'fdeploy.ini' that does contain the invalid path. Unfortunately, it wont let me edit and save the file, and I still not sure that it would solve my problem if I could.
It is also interesting to note that when I do group policy modeling for a particular user/computer that I know is having problems, it doesnt show this gpo as applying, while Group Policy Results does.
I will attempt to get some logging from a client and post it later today for further research. Thanks again for all of your help!

Hi Mortensen,
>If I go further into the path (..\Policies\GUID\User\Documents & Settings) there is a file called 'fdeploy.ini' that does contain the invalid path. Unfortunately, it wont let me edit and save the file, and I still not sure that it would solve my problem if I could.
Clients will not be affected by modifing "fdeploy.ini" file on the domain controller.
>It is also interesting to note that when I do group policy modeling for a particular user/computer that I know is having problems, it doesnt show this gpo as applying, while Group Policy Results does.
Have you tried running a RSOP.msc on the client? If there is not Folder Redirection policy in Resultant Set of Policy, it means that the policy is not applied and the deleted GPO settings still reside on the client, if you want to delete them, it should be restored through the GPO, however, the GPO has been deleted on the domain controller.
According my testing, the simplest way is to recreate a GPO as same as before for folder redirection, which could override settings to client machine, however, the only thing you really need to do is redirecting the valid path, then the old folder redirection setting will never impact on clients.

I ran RSOP on one of the clients: There are two folder redirection settings showing up:
My Documents Redirection => is redirecting My Documents to the path that I want it to be redirected to and via the policy that I want to use
My Pictures Redirection => is redirecting My Pictures to an old/invalid location via a policy that no longer exists
I was under the impression that all I would need to do to resolve the My pictures path is to create a new policy that overrides the old setting. This has been done, as illustrated above, but 'My Pictures' does not inherit the new path from the new policy. I have attempted to edit the registry in order to redirect My Pictures, but it only lasts until Group Policy refreshes again. Any other thoughts?

Hi K. Mortensen,
You mentioned that "This has been done, as illustrated above, but 'My Pictures' does not inherit the new path from the new policy. "
Which level container did you link to before? In the same way, you also create a new GPO and link to that container and check if the old setting can be overridden by new GPO.
If not, please try to link to lower level container (such as OU or sub-OU) to test the OU that contain test users who take higher prioritized order and check if the new setting can be applied. Also, please ensure that you are not configuring enforce setting to apply any GPOs.

Voldar-
This was great help! On a test user, I renamed the profile, and immediately after they logged in I got the policy results that I was expecting to see. This seems to be a good resolution for the client side issue. Now, I need to make sure whether or not applying this fix will get rid of the error logs showing up on all of my domain controllers every 5 minutes. I will mark your post as an answer for now, and come back to this post if I am still seeing that issue. Thanks so much for your help!

Brent -
thanks very much for all of the time you put in to helping me get a resolution to this issue. I really appreciate it! As I mentioned to Voldar, I am confident that renaming the user profiles has resolved the issue from a client side perspective, but am not so confident that I will see the event logs stop logging every 5 minutes on my domain controllers. I will monitor the logs for a short while, and if they still persist, I will come back to this post. Again, thanks for all of your help!

Hello K,
Once you solve every profile problems, I don't think you'll see any errors on the DC servers - if there is no trace of the old policy left on the SYSVOL folders of your DCs.
P.S. Thanks for the point, but I am happier to know that I could help !

Kris,
By any chance, did your solution get rid of the "ImpersonateUser: Failed to impersonate user with 5." and "GetUserNameAndDomain Failed to impersonate user" entries in your userenv logs?
I ask because I see those a lot when I troubleshoot various issues in the office and wish I could nail down what exactly the problem is. I'm about to ask the question on this forum, but thought I would check with you first since I saw it in your thread.
