Authentication error when trying to connecto to Hyper-V VM

Question

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 7:45 PM

I get the following error when I try to connect to any VM running on a Hyper-V Host.

An authentication error has occurred (code:0x8009030e).

I am running SCVMM 2008 Beta and Hyper-V RTM.

SCVMM connects fine to any VM running on Virtual Server 2005 R2.  Hyper-V MMC can connect fine to the VMs on the Hyper-V box so I know the VM's are functioning ok.  It does not matter if I use the SCVMM Console from the SCVMM Server or from my Vista machine.  The same error occurs.

Shutting down the windows 2008 internal firewall on both the SCVMM Server and the Hyper-V servers does not matter.  Same error.

Any one have any ideas?

Thanks

Jeff

OK, I figured this out.

It is a permissions issue.  Not on the Hyper-V hosts nor on the SCVMM server but on my Vista machine.  With UAC turned on I do not have the permissions to connect via SCVMM Console to the VM's.  By doing a runas on the SCVMM Console I can connect successfully to the VM's. This just started happening as before I didn't have to do a runas.  Only thing I can think of is one of the recent windows updates on the SCVMM server and on Vista has caused this to start happening.

Thanks

Jeff

I had the same issue today, this is what I did to get it working

Hyper-V settings->User Credentials->Uncheck "Use default credentials automatically (no prompt)".

Connect to the VM again, it will prompt to enter username and password. Enter credentials, check the box  "Remember my credentials".

RDP connection will be succeeded now.

Hyper-V settings->User Credentials->Check "Use default credentials automatically (no prompt)".

I found that I get this error when logged into my desktop via smartcard. If I log in with regular password then the error never occurs.

Perfect Fix, thank you :-)
