MSDN/TechNet Forums: Known Issues

Please leave known issues below. We'll clean them up, add more info, and categorize them as we go. We are starting with Naomi's list from this thread.

The forums were recently (June 18, 2013) re-designed. Most of the bugs were carried over to the new design. Some are now more severe - say, NNTP bridge is not functioning anymore.

See discussion about bridge in this forum's thread "The Future of the NNTP Bridge on MSDN".

For the suggestions of improving (salvaging) the current forum's interface see this TechNet article New Forums Design: Suggestions, Impressions, Ideas.

My Forums and Forums Home

1. When viewing 'My Forums', I no longer see who and when replied last in that forum. This is a regression as this is how it worked before.

  1. When viewing results from 'Forums Home' the last reply information is often incorrect and sometimes outdated. It seems to show information from deleted and moved threads.

  2. When viewing 'My Forums', if you click on any user name (after "Created by" or "Last reply by") you get your own profile instead of the profile of the named user.

Thread Moderation

1. When the thread is moved, it no longer shows the forum it came from. This a regression since this is how it always worked before.

  • WORKAROUND: Reply with info about which forum it came from.
  • STATUS: Logged as a bug and is a Known Issue.

Threads Displayed on Main Forum Pages

1. When I reply in a thread, my post now shows as unread - few months ago it was not so.

In MSDN, TechNet and Microsoft brand of the forums when I reply to a thread, that thread now shows as 'Unread' (it has italic font). So, it means I would need to re-read my own reply again if I want to make it look as 'Read' (no italic).

  1. Only threads that were never read before are displayed when 'Unread' filter is applied. Threads with newer replies are no longer displayed. This is a behavior change.
It will be nice to turn this current bug into enhancement if two different views will be allowed (or 3 views). Right now there is no simple way to see all the threads that we already read that have newer messages.

Marking & Proposing Answers

1. It is very hard to mark or propose answers of people with many points - the more points, the harder. It could take many attempts.

  • WORKAROUND: One way to improve chances is to vote a reply as Helpful first.
  • STATUS: Logged as a bug and is a Known Issue.

The problem with marking replies as answers seems to be currently fixed (05/24/2013). The opposite problem of unmarking/unproposing seems to remain. Of course, this problem is of less importance and magnitude as the original problem, but it is better to fix anyway.

Displayed Profile Information

1. MigrationUser problem.

  • WORKAROUND: Refresh page.
  • STATUS: Logged as a bug and is a Known Issue.

Text Strings

1. Wrong language problem - it seems to be almost fixed with the occasional 'Already voted' in the wrong language.

  • WORKAROUND: Refresh page.
  • STATUS: Logged as a bug and is a Known Issue.

Forum Layout

Currently MSDN forum has very narrow layout which wastes space and makes code blocks unreadable. This is very inconvenient when the forum is used by desktop users. Please make the layout as it was before - wider.

NNTP bridge users

NNTP users replies do not appear in the forum's view. Someone has to open the thread in order to see the replies. Therefore it is very easy to miss replies from these users.

Note. The NNTP bridge is currently not working (as of July 2nd, 2013).
Status November 12, 2013: The authentication issue for the NNTP bridge has recently been resolved, but this issue still remains.
