What is Azure Active Directory?

Windows Azure Active Directory is a service that provides identity and access management capabilities in the cloud. In much the same way that Active Directory is a service made available to customers through the Windows Server operating system for on-premises identity management, Windows Azure Active Directory (Windows Azure AD) is a service that is made available through Windows Azure for cloud-based identity management.

Before you activate Azure Active Directory Sync. You might want ensure all your on-premises site to site Active directory is being setup properly before initiate the synchronization. 

9 steps to Azure Directory Sync.

  1. -- login with your dedicated Global Admin Azure account. https://manage.windowsazure.com/ and click on active directory --> "directory integration tab"
  2. Before you begin, ensure that the domain which you are trying to establish a directory synchronization is being initiated in the domain tab once is confirm --> click on "activate tab
  3. A confirmation notification will prompt you for verification. Click "yes"
  4. At the same page you will see the highlighted "here" link. click on the "here" link. Doing so it will download a copy of the Directory Sync tools. Save a copy of the tools.
  5. Once the directory Sync tool is downloaded - You can execute the directory sync tool at any of the computer which is residing in the domain.
  6. Launch the "Directory Sync tool" and accept the terms and condition.
  7. Click "next" to initialize the Synchronization.
  8.  You will then be prompted to enter the Azure Global administrator **username **and password. Please do so.
  9. Once the password has been input successfully. Synchronization will take effect for the next few minutes. Once the Synchronization is complete. You will be prompted that the directory synchronization is now complete.
  10. Step 10) Now Go back to https://manage.windowsazure.com/ and click on active directory --> Click on "Users" You should now see a list of users being updated into the Azure Active directory.
