Replatforming has the potential to modernize mission-critical SAP workloads. Microsoft has expanded its long-standing partnership with SAP, and now you can get full support for running SAP applications across development and test and production scenarios.
The following best practices can help you get started laying the foundation for SAP modernization.
Capacity planning
- Start by evaluating your current environment, including all your existing SAP applications and infrastructure, paying special attention to capacity planning.
- Select the Azure services that best meet your requirements.
Architecture design
- Set up Azure Virtual Network (VNet) and configure connectivity using VPN or ExpressRoute.
- Use Azure availability zones and Azure Site Recovery for high availability and disaster recovery.
- Implement security best practices, including encryption and access control.
Modernization strategy
- For data modernization, use SAP Database Migration Option (DMO), Azure Database Migration Service, or other tools.
- To minimize downtime and disruption, gradually migrate application tiers to Azure.
Testing and validation
- Perform functional testing to verify application functionality in the new environment.
- Ensure performance meets or exceeds on-premises benchmarks.
- Validate that security measures are effective.
Cutover and optimization
- Switch production workloads to Azure during the final cutover.
- Continuously monitor and optimize performance, cost, and security.
- Ensure that you have the appropriate SAP licenses for Azure.
