Why Azure?

Azure is Microsoft’s global cloud platform for building and running workloads. It supports organizations of any size, industry, or stage of cloud adoption.

This article provides a high-level view of why organizations choose Azure. It outlines the core strengths of the platform and the value it enables so decision makers can evaluate whether Azure fits their cloud strategy.

Azure for every organization

Whatever you run today and whatever your cloud strategy, Azure supports your starting point. It operates at global scale and gives developers the flexibility they expect from a modern cloud.

The following section highlights key reasons organizations adopt Azure and the strengths that make it a flexible and reliable foundation for cloud adoption.

  • Flexibility. Azure runs your stack the way you already run it. It supports both Linux and Windows, and it works with popular open-source tools such as Kubernetes and Terraform. You can rent raw infrastructure or use managed services that run the underlying servers for you, so your teams spend less time on maintenance. For data, Azure offers fully managed databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL, and it provides options compatible with MongoDB and Cassandra. You move to the cloud without giving up the technologies your teams already know.

  • Developer experience. Azure integrates with the tools and workflows that development teams already use. This integration includes GitHub, Visual Studio, and Visual Studio Code. It provides SDKs and APIs for major programming languages such as Java, Python, JavaScript, Go, C++, Rust, and .NET. Teams can build, test, and deploy using familiar workflows.

  • Service and partner ecosystem. Azure provides a broad catalog of cloud services across compute, storage, networking, data, AI, and integration. These services are designed to work together as a consistent platform. In addition, the Microsoft Marketplace includes thousands of validated partner solutions. These solutions extend the platform with third-party software and services. Organizations can assemble solutions quickly without building every component themselves.

  • Global scale and resilience. Azure operates a large global infrastructure composed of many regions worldwide. This footprint supports high availability, disaster recovery, and low-latency access. Deploy workloads close to your users and meet regional data residency requirements. Built-in platform capabilities support resilience through region pairs, availability zones, and service-level agreements.

  • Hybrid and multicloud support. Most organizations don't run everything in one place. Their systems span their own datacenters, remote edge locations, and more than one cloud provider. Azure Arc extends Azure management, governance, and security to all of these environments, so you operate them in one consistent way.   • AI platform and capabilities. Azure gives you a complete platform for building AI, anchored by Microsoft Foundry. Foundry puts more than 11,000 models at your fingertips, including models from Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and others, so you pick the right one for each job and switch as your needs change. Microsoft Entra controls who and what can use these AI workloads, and built-in responsible AI features help you set policy and manage risk. You adopt AI quickly and stay in control.   • Governance and security. Security and governance come built into Azure rather than bolted on afterward. Azure Policy enforces your organization's standards automatically across every resource. Microsoft Defender for Cloud watches your workloads for threats, and Microsoft Purview helps you govern your data and meet compliance rules. Microsoft Entra ID makes identity the foundation of access, so every request to reach a resource gets verified. This is the heart of zero trust, which verifies each request rather than trusting it by default. Together these capabilities help you manage risk and meet regulations even as you grow.

  • Proven guidance. You don't have to figure Azure out alone. Microsoft provides extensive, field-tested guidance to support cloud adoption and architecture decisions. This guidance includes the Cloud Adoption Framework, Well-Architected Framework, and Azure Architecture Center. These resources define proven approaches for governance, security, operations, and design. Use these frameworks to reduce risk and accelerate adoption with confidence.

Azure for Microsoft customers

Azure delivers strong value on its own. For organizations that already use Microsoft services, that value expands further. Azure integrates with Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft Entra, Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Intune, and others to provide a consistent approach to identity, governance, data, and operations across the organization.

  • Governance and security: You get one identity-first security model across everything. A person signs in with a single identity that follows them from their desktop to Microsoft 365 to Azure. That same identity controls what they can reach, from their devices and productivity apps to your business applications and cloud resources. Microsoft Defender protects that same boundary, detecting and responding to threats across your endpoints, Microsoft 365, and Azure workloads.

  • Data: Your data becomes one connected estate. You bring together information from your Microsoft 365 apps, Microsoft Fabric, and your Azure databases, then feed it into AI and analytics to get more from it. Microsoft Purview governs this whole estate. It helps you classify your data, apply your policies, and meet compliance requirements across your own datacenters, Azure, and Microsoft 365.

  • AI: Microsoft gives you one AI platform that reaches across Azure and your business applications, through Microsoft Foundry, Microsoft Copilot Studio, and Microsoft Copilot. As your organization starts using AI agents, Microsoft Agent 365 gives you one place to manage and secure every agent, much the way you manage your people. These agents work from real context about your business. Microsoft IQ supplies that context: Foundry IQ draws on your policies and trusted documents, Fabric IQ understands your business data, Work IQ reflects how your people work, and Web IQ brings in information from the web.

What does Azure cost?

Azure uses consumption-based pricing, so you pay only for what you use. Spend scales with demand across services such as compute, storage, and networking. This model provides flexibility, but it requires active governance to keep costs predictable.

Azure includes built-in capabilities that help you control spending, plan ahead, and make informed financial decisions.

  • Cost control and FinOps. Microsoft Cost Management gives you budgets, alerts, and reporting across all your subscriptions, so your finance and engineering teams see the same numbers. When spending starts to drift, you catch it early and act before it becomes a surprise. This approach is the foundation of FinOps, a practice that brings finance and engineering together to manage cloud cost as a team rather than reacting after the bill arrives.   • Commitment-based discounts. When your usage is steady and predictable, you can lower the price you pay. Azure savings plans and Azure reservations reduce the unit cost of computing and other services in exchange for a commitment to consistent use over one or three years. For workloads you know you will keep running, this is one of the simplest ways to cut your bill. See Azure savings plans and Azure reservations.

  • License reuse. Azure Hybrid Benefit allows organizations to apply existing Windows Server and SQL Server licenses with Software Assurance to Azure workloads.   • Free usage. Many Azure services include free tiers or limited free usage. These support experimentation, prototyping, and small workloads without upfront cost. This allows teams to validate solutions before committing to production scale.

How to adopt Azure

After you decide to adopt Azure, you need a structured approach to move forward. The Cloud Adoption Framework provides a proven path and organizes adoption into clear phases that align business and technical decisions.

1. Azure foundation. These phases set the direction and prepare your platform. They define why you're adopting Azure and how your platform is designed.

  • Strategy: Define business objectives and expected outcomes.
  • Plan: Prepare the organization for the cloud.
  • Ready: Deploy the Azure landing zone.

2. Operational standards. These phases define the operational standards for your Azure environment. You establish them before onboarding workloads so governance, security, and management are applied from the start. They then run continuously to keep the entire estate controlled, secure, and reliable as it grows. The focus is on the environment as a whole rather than individual workloads.

  • Govern: Enforce organizational standards across Azure.
  • Secure: Apply security controls across Azure.
  • Manage: Maintain the health of your Azure environment.

3. Workload onboarding. These phases bring your workloads onto Azure. Together they make up the framework's Adopt phase, and they build on the foundation you set up.

  • Migrate: Move existing workloads to Azure from on-premises or other clouds.
  • Modernize: Improve existing workloads to better meet business needs.
  • Build cloud native: Build new workloads or enhance existing ones with cloud-native capabilities.
