Tutorial: Explore dashboards and query data with Genie in Databricks One

This tutorial introduces Databricks One, a simplified Azure Databricks interface for business users.

This tutorial walks you through:

  • Opening the Databricks One interface
  • Discovering and searching for assets shared with you
  • Viewing an AI/BI dashboard
  • Asking natural language questions about dashboard data using Genie

Before you begin

  • You must have the Consumer access entitlement in your workspace. See What is consumer access?.
  • Your workspace administrator must have shared at least one dashboard with you.

Step 1: Open Databricks One

If your only entitlement is Consumer access, you land on the Databricks One home page after signing in.

If you have additional entitlements such as Workspace access or Databricks SQL access, click App icon. in the upper-right corner of the workspace and select Databricks One.

Step 2: Discover your assets

Use the Databricks One home page to find the assets available to you.

  1. In the For you section, browse recently opened assets, favorites, and items trending in your workspace.
  2. Click Dashboards or Genie spaces in the left navigation to see all assets of that type shared with you.
  3. To search for a specific asset by name, type in the search bar at the top of the page.
  4. To filter results, click Environment icon. on the left of the listing page:
    • Type: Show only dashboards or Genie spaces.
    • Status: Show only Certified assets or your Favorites.
    • Owner: Search by the asset owner's user ID.
    • Last modified: Filter by how recently the asset was updated.
  5. To mark an asset as a favorite, click the star icon next to the asset's name.

Step 3: View a dashboard

Dashboards display pre-built charts and metrics prepared by your team.

  1. Click Dashboards to open the dashboards listing page.
  2. Click a dashboard to open it.
  3. Interact with the visualizations by using filters, hovering over data points, and scrolling through the charts.

Step 4: Ask Genie data questions

While viewing a dashboard, you can ask natural language questions about the data using the built-in Ask Genie button.

  1. From an open dashboard, click Ask Genie. A chat window opens on the right side of the dashboard.
  2. In the chat box, type a question about the data, such as "What were the top 5 products by sales last quarter?"
  3. Review the answer. Genie returns a table, chart, or summary based on the dashboard data.
