Admin onboarding for Databricks SQL
Before users can query your organizations’s own data in Databricks SQL, a number of administrative onboarding tasks are required before the SQL admin can begin configuring Databricks SQL for user access. A SQL admin is a workspace admin with the Databricks SQL entitlement.
Note
For a brief overview of the analytic capabilities of Databricks SQL for data analysis with no configuration required, see Tutorial: Import sample dashboards to Databricks SQL.
Before you begin
Before a workspace admin can manage Databricks SQL and take advantage of all of its capabilities, the following requirements must be met.
- A data governance solution has been implemented for data access. Solution options are Unity Catalog and Table access control.
- To support the serverless SQL warehouse type, an account admin must enable Enable serverless SQL warehouses by accepting the terms.
Enable the SQL entitlement for users and groups
Grant users and groups access to the Databricks SQL entitlement to enable them to access Databricks SQL using the Admin Console. See Grant users access to Databricks SQL.
Note
To access the Admin Console, switch to the Data Science & Engineering persona, click your username in the upper right of the workspace, and then select Admin Console from the drop down.
Enable warehouse types (Optional)
The pro SQL warehouse type is enabled by default. To support the creation of additional warehouse types, you must enable them in the SQL Admin Console. Additional warehouse types that you can configure are: serverless SQL warehouse and classic SQL warehouse. See What are SQL warehouses?.
Note
To access the SQL Admin Console, switch to the Databricks SQL persona, click your username in the upper right of the workspace, and then select SQL Admin Console from the drop down.
Configure access to cloud storage
You must configure the workspace for access to data objects. See Data access configuration.
Data access configuration
You must configure data access for all warehouses in the workspace. See Data access configuration.
SQL configuration
You can specify SQL configuration parameters for all warehouses in the workspace. See SQL configuration parameters.
Configure general settings
You can configure general settings that control Databricks SQL presentation and behavior applying to all Databricks SQL users in an organization. See General settings.
Configure alert destinations
You can configure alert destinations for all users to send emails, Slack messages, or custom webhooks. See Alert destinations.
