Ultra Disk is the highest-performance Azure managed disk option available for Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible server. It's designed for mission-critical, input/output (I/O)-intensive workloads that require high IOPS, high throughput, and consistently low latency.
Ultra Disk lets you configure storage capacity, IOPS (input/output operations per second), and throughput independently. This flexibility helps you match storage performance to your workload without provisioning extra capacity only to gain more IOPS or throughput.
Important
Ultra Disk support for Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible server is in preview. Availability depends on the selected region, compute SKU, and preview release. Contact your Microsoft representative to confirm support for your deployment.
Benefits and features
Ultra Disk provides the following capabilities:
- Up to 64-TB storage capacity.
- Up to 400,000 IOPS per disk.
- Up to 10,000-MB/s throughput per disk.
- Submillisecond latency design targets.
- Independent configuration of capacity, IOPS, and throughput.
These capabilities make Ultra Disk suitable for workloads such as high-volume online transaction processing (OLTP), transaction-heavy systems, and other database workloads where storage latency or I/O capacity is the primary performance constraint.
| Capability | Ultra Disk maximum |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 64 TB |
| IOPS | 400,000 |
| Throughput | 10,000 MB/s |
| Latency | Submillisecond design target |
Performance considerations
The effective storage performance of your server is limited by the lowest limit in its configuration. The selected compute SKU might support fewer IOPS or less throughput than the Ultra Disk configuration. Plan compute and storage together to ensure that the server can use the provisioned disk performance.
For example, selecting a disk configuration that supports 400,000 IOPS doesn't guarantee that the server can achieve 400,000 IOPS. The compute SKU, workload I/O pattern, and other resource limits also affect the performance that the server can deliver.
To compare compute storage limits, see Compute options in Azure Database for PostgreSQL. For more guidance, see Plan Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible server deployments for operational performance.
Limitations and considerations
Consider the following limitations before you select Ultra Disk:
- Storage autogrow isn't supported.
- Regional and compute SKU availability is limited during the preview.
Note
You can only scale provisioned storage up, not down.
Monitor storage performance
Monitor your I/O consumption in the Azure portal or by using Azure CLI commands. Relevant metrics include storage limit, storage percentage, storage used, and I/O percentage.
