Egnyte MCP Server (Preview)
The Egnyte MCP Server, built on the Model Context Protocol, provides secure access to Egnyte’s AI-powered content intelligence. Search across enterprise files, ask questions about documents in natural language, summarize lengthy content, and extract key insights from many files at once to find answers fast. Every request honors existing Egnyte permissions, roles, and folder-level security controls, so enterprise content stays governed and never leaves Egnyte’s control.

Egnyte MCP Server
The Egnyte MCP Server uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to provide a secure connection to Egnyte's enterprise content platform. Once added to an agent, users can search their Egnyte content, ask questions about documents using Egnyte AI, extract key insights across multiple files, query Knowledge Bases, summarize documents, manage file metadata, and create share links — all with the organization's existing Egnyte permissions, governance, and security policies fully applied.
Publisher: Egnyte, Inc.
Prerequisites
To use the Egnyte MCP Server, you need:
- An active Egnyte domain on a plan with the AI add-on (enabled by default or purchased). Contact your account manager or the Egnyte Sales team for access.
- An Egnyte administrator must allow external LLM access via MCP: in Egnyte, go to Settings → Configuration → AI, enable Allow external LLM clients to connect to Egnyte via MCP, and ensure Microsoft Copilot is selected in the allowed apps list.
- A valid Egnyte user account with permissions for the content you intend to access.
- Network access allowing outbound HTTPS communication to the Egnyte MCP endpoint.

Obtaining Credentials
The Egnyte MCP Server uses OAuth 2.0 authentication. No API key is required. When creating a connection, users sign in with their Egnyte account credentials and authorize access. All subsequent operations are performed on behalf of the signed-in user, and Egnyte's enterprise authorization and auditing apply to every request.
Getting Started
- Ask your Egnyte administrator to enable external LLM access via MCP and allow Microsoft Copilot (Settings → Configuration → AI).
- Add the Egnyte MCP Server to your agent as a tool.
- When prompted, sign in with your Egnyte account to create a connection.
- Start working with your Egnyte content using natural language — for example: "Find the latest signed MSA for Contoso," "Summarize the Q2 board deck," or "Create a share link for the onboarding guide."
For a detailed walkthrough, see the Egnyte MCP Server overview and the developer documentation.
Known Issues and Limitations
- File uploads through the MCP server are restricted to text-based formats (.txt, .csv, .json, .md, .html, and similar). Binary file uploads (such as .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, .pdf) are not supported.
- All operations are limited by the connected user's Egnyte permissions; content the user cannot access in Egnyte is not accessible through the MCP server.
- Availability requires the Egnyte AI add-on on the domain.
- Large documents or result sets may be truncated to fit response limits; use search filters to narrow results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my data secure?
Yes. All access is governed through OAuth 2.0 and follows your organization's existing Egnyte permissions, roles, and folder-level controls. Data stays within Egnyte's security framework — there is no direct database access or credential sharing.
Who can connect?
Any user with a valid Egnyte account on a domain where the AI add-on is active and an administrator has allowed Microsoft Copilot as an MCP client.
