Summarize emails with Finance agents in Microsoft 365 Outlook (preview)

[This article is prerelease documentation and is subject to change.]

This article describes how Finance agents in Microsoft 365 Outlook summarize emails.

Finance agents in Microsoft 365 Outlook use AI to summarize email conversations. When summary information is available, it's shown only for external emails, and only when the content complies with responsible AI guidelines. Currently, the summary feature returns results only in English.

The following components are part of the email summary.

  • Email summary – Finance agents in Microsoft 365 Outlook provide three to four bulleted points that summarize the main points of the email. The bulleted points are labeled with understandable references that indicate where the summarized information can be found in the body of the email. In addition, to summarize the contents of the email thread, Finance agents in Microsoft 365 Outlook take advantage of the integration with your enterprise resource planning (ERP) system to retrieve the customer's outstanding balance, the invoice date, and the amounts for any invoice number that can be retrieved from the back-end ERP system.
  • Regenerate reply – You can regenerate the summary. Generative AI isn't deterministic, and the expectation is that the regenerated summary might vary slightly from any previous summaries of the same email.
  • Suggest a reply – When an email is in draft mode, you can suggest a reply, based on the body of the original email.
  • User feedback – You can provide feedback about the accuracy of an email summary. This feedback helps improve the quality of the service.
