These release notes provide information about new features and nonsecurity updates that are included in the Microsoft Edge Stable Channel.

Feature updates

  • Discover, collect, and protect data shared to Generative AI apps in Microsoft Edge with Microsoft Purview. Microsoft Edge for Business now supports inline enforcement of Purview DLP policies for unmanaged Generative AI applications. When a policy is configured in Purview to monitor or block interactions with unmanaged GenAI apps, Edge automatically applies the required settings to enforce those protections in the browser. This capability helps prevent sensitive data from being shared in prompts to AI services. Learn more on how to get started here.

    With this update, automatic activation of Microsoft Purview DLP inline protections for unmanaged GenAI apps in Edge for Business takes only one click. Learn more here. Administrators can create Purview policies to collect and analyze text prompts submitted to unmanaged GenAI apps in Edge to surface sensitive data exposure risks. Administrators can also block prompt submissions for users with elevated insider risk, enforcing adaptive protection directly in the browser.

Announcements

  • Important update regarding the rollout of the Auto-Open feature. We’ve identified an issue with the initial implementation of the Auto-Open feature—it didn’t fully respect user preferences, and some settings weren’t honored as intended.

    To address this, the changes are being rolled back in phases during the next month to ensure all user preferences are correctly honored. As a result, users may temporarily notice a return to previous behavior where the sidepane opens even if the sidebar visibility is set to Off.

    Here are a few ways to manage the auto-open experience:

    • Manually Turn Off Auto-Open Pane: Users can manually disable the Auto-Open experience by navigating to the settings page if they prefer not to see the sidepane open for Outlook and Teams links.
    • Automatic Engagement-Based Logic: If a user doesn't engage with the Auto-Open experience and quickly closes it three times in a row, the feature is automatically turned off.
    • Turn off Auto-Open Pane using admin policies: Admins can control the Auto-Open experience by using either of these policies.
      1. HubsSidebarEnabled: Set as "False" to turn off
      2. ExtensionSettings: Set the sidebar_auto_open_blocked flag as "True" to turn off

Fixes

  • Fixed an issue in headless mode, which caused features like Print to PDF and Screenshot to not work as expected.

Feature updates

  • Configuration update for MIP Enforcement. Starting in Microsoft Edge 142, new configuration step introduced to maintain MIP protections via Microsoft Edge management service. Existing settings remain active until admins choose to update. For more information, see Protect Office documents with Microsoft Purview Information Protection labeling.

  • SmartScreen and Scareware blocker. In organizations where both Scareware blocker and SmartScreen are enabled, users will now have the option to send signals to SmartScreen. The new setting “Share detected scam sites with Microsoft Defender SmartScreen” is available under edge://settings/privacy/security. If enabled, Scareware blocker reports its verdict to Microsoft Defender SmartScreen to enhance protection. Admins can control availability to this feature using the ScarewareBlockerSendDetectedSitesToSmartScreenEnabled policy.

  • New Scareware blocker policies. Introducing two new policies for admins to configure Scareware blocker. The first, ScarewareBlockerAllowListDomains, configures a list of trusted domains for Microsoft Edge Scareware blocker. When a website's source URL matches any domain in this list, Microsoft Edge Scareware blocker doesn't analyze that site. The second, ScarewareBlockerBlocksDetectedSitesEnabled, blocks sites that are detected as potential tech scams. For both of these new policies, they'll only take effect if the ScarewareBlockerProtectionEnabled policy is enabled.

  • Drag to group tabs. Tab groupings can be made by dragging a tab over another. This feature can now be controlled by the "Drag to group tabs" toggle in Microsoft Edge Settings edge://settings/appearance/tabs.

  • Open external links in another profile when recommended by external applications. When Microsoft Edge is set as the default browser to open external links from applications, Microsoft Edge must determine which profile to open the links. Users can control which profile to use through the “Default profile for external links” setting. Applications such as Microsoft Teams or Outlook can also recommend a profile for the links. Currently, the user setting is prioritized over application recommendations. With this feature, the application recommended profile is given priority, instead of the profile selected in the setting. Admins can control the availability of the feature using the EdgeOpenExternalLinksWithAppSpecifiedProfile policy.

  • Improved Autofill experience in Microsoft Edge. When users fill in an Address on a form, they'll be prompted to choose whether to save it for future Autofill suggestions. This enhancement ensures Autofill data is saved intentionally by users and reduces unwanted entries as part of their Autofill suggestion. Note: This is a controlled feature rollout. If you don't see this feature, check back as we continue our rollout.

  • Changes to IE mode in Microsoft Edge. The entry points to reload a site manually in IE mode have been removed from consumer devices by default. This includes the option to reload in IE mode in the hamburger/ellipsis menu (a.k.a. AppMenu). Also, users will no longer see the option to add the toolbar button, and the toolbar button for IE mode will be removed. This change has completed with the release of Microsoft Edge 142 Stable.

    This change doesn't impact enterprise customers when their devices are configured via group policy InternetExplorerIntegrationLevel. For more information, see Securing the Future: Changes to Internet Explorer Mode in Microsoft Edge.

  • A Refreshed Profile Flyout Experience for Better Clarity and Actionability. The Microsoft Edge profile flyout is updated to deliver a cleaner, more intuitive experience. The refreshed design makes it easier to distinguish between work and personal profiles, manage credentials, and quickly access key settings—all within a polished interface that supports modern browsing needs. With streamlined sign-in, clearer profile types, and organization branding preserved, this update enables a more efficient and trustworthy experience for customers. Announcements

  • New PDF Viewer Enabled by Default in Microsoft Edge. In Microsoft Edge Stable version 141, the Adobe-powered PDF viewer is now the default experience for enterprise users on Windows. Migration occurs on a phased rollout and will continue over the next few months. This change enhances performance, accessibility, and compatibility, and introduces exclusive enterprise features. Admins can manage the experience using the NewPDFReaderEnabled policy, which controls the default viewer in Edge for Windows or the NewPDFReaderWebView2List policy, which controls viewer behavior in WebView2 apps. For more information, see the FAQ page. Also, tenant admins can find additional details in the Message Center section of the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under MC1154300.

  • Local Network Access. Local Network Access in Microsoft Edge is a security feature that restricts a website’s ability to send requests to servers on your local network. When a website tries to connect, Microsoft Edge shows a prompt asking you to grant or deny permission. This protects privacy and security while maintaining compatibility with modern web standards. The ability of a website to request this permission from users is restricted to secure contexts. This feature is currently disabled by default in Microsoft Edge, but the default state will change starting in Edge 143. Enterprise administrators can configure Local Network Access policies.   • Fixed an issue where a UIA (UI Automation) element recursively referenced itself as a child, causing timeouts and memory issues.

Feature Updates

  • Media control center. With media control center in Microsoft Edge, Windows users can easily manage and control multiple media sources from any website, all in one place. Quickly access videos in picture-in-picture mode, cast media to other devices, and control music, video, or any other sounds playing in Edge. Simply click on the media control center icon, depicted as a music note icon, found to the right of the address bar when media with sounds are playing to get started.

  • Real-time video translation. Real-time video translation. If you're learning a new language, or just like to watch foreign videos with subtitles in your preferred language, Microsoft Edge can help. With real-time video translation in Edge, you can watch videos in a different language with translated audio dub. Feature availability and functionality may vary by device type, hardware configuration (minimum 12-GB RAM and 4-core CPU), region, and platform. Availability is limited to select markets. For more information, see Real-time video translation | Microsoft Edge. Admins can control availability to this feature using the LiveVideoTranslationEnabled policy.

  • Policy to enable/disable Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat in Edge for Business from showing in the toolbar. Edge for Business now has a dedicated policy, Microsoft365CopilotChatIconEnabled, to enable and disable Copilot in Edge from showing in the Edge toolbar. This policy is the sole control for managing Copilot's visibility in the toolbar and the HubsSidebarEnabledd policy will no longer control the visibility of the Copilot toolbar button.

  • Tab preview on hover policy. The ShowTabPreviewEnabled policy lets administrators control whether Microsoft Edge displays a preview of the tab content when the user hovers over a tab. If the policy is enabled or not configured, Microsoft Edge shows a tab preview when the user hovers over a tab.

  • Update to "Clear Browsing Data on Close" behavior. The "Clear browsing data on close" setting (edge://settings/privacy/clearBrowsingData/clearOnClose) no longer supports automatic deletion of Passwords and Autofill data. The Passwords and Autofill form data toggles have been removed from the Settings page. Manual deletion of Passwords and Autofill remains possible via the "Delete browsing data" settings. The other data types (Browsing history, Download history, Cookies, Cached images, and Site permissions) are unaffected and can still be cleared on exit. This update doesn't impact enterprise policies, which continue to function as expected.

Announcement

  • The Microsoft Edge Browser Policy Documentation has been updated to include mobile-specific policies. This update is intended to consolidate the desktop and mobile policies into a single location. There are no changes to the policies themselves; this is a documentation update only.

Feature updates

  • Connected Feature Control (CFC). Admins now have centralized, granular control over cloud-powered and AI-driven services in Microsoft Edge such as Translate, Compose, and Auto Tab Grouping through ​Connected Feature Control (CFC). This new policy allows organizations to align Edge with their compliance and data protection standards by enabling or disabling specific connected experiences from a single location in the Edge Management Service portal.

    Note

    This experience is starting public preview rollout and can be accessed by opting in to targeted release in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

  • Extensions in Edge Settings. Enabling users to find extensions in Browser Settings (edge://settings) through addition of "Extensions" navigation menu and search functionalities across installed extensions.

  • Recommendation for DiskCacheSize policy. It's recommended not to configure a custom value for the DiskCacheSize policy as Microsoft Edge automatically manages the cache size for optimal performance. Setting a small value can degrade performance and increase network usage.

  • Scareware blocker. Scareware blocker in Microsoft Edge is your local AI powered shield designed to protect you and your users from scareware attacks. Feature availability and functionality may vary by device type, hardware configuration, region, and platform. Scareware blocker is enabled by default only on devices with more than 2GB of RAM and at least five processor cores. Devices that don't meet these minimum system requirements may require manual activation or may not support this feature. Admins can control availability to this feature using the ScarewareBlockerProtectionEnabled policy. For more information, see Scareware blocker.

  • Tab Groups – Auto-Save and Easy Revisit. Microsoft Edge now automatically saves tab groups, making it easier than ever for users to pick up where they left off. Organized tab groups are preserved and ready to revisit anytime, whether a user is switching tasks or restarting the browser. Admins can control the availability of the feature using the SyncTypesListDisabled policy with the “openTabs” data type.

  • HTTPS-first mode. HTTPS-first mode in Microsoft Edge automatically upgrades HTTP connections to HTTPS when possible. If a site doesn’t support HTTPS, Microsoft Edge shows a warning to highlight the security risk. This appears only for public sites—not private ones or manually entered HTTP URLs. Users can enable the warning in edge://settings and admins can control availability to this feature using the HttpsOnlyMode policy.   • Third-party storage partitioning policy updates. The ThirdPartyStoragePartitioningBlockedForOrigins and DefaultThirdPartyStoragePartitioningSetting policies are deprecated in Microsoft Edge version 140 and they're planned to be obsoleted in Microsoft Edge version 145. Replacement for these policies is usage of the requestStorageAccess method. For more information, see Document: requestStorageAccess() method - Web APIs.

  • Enhancement to Edge updates. Microsoft is introducing an improvement to the Settings and more menu (“…” on the menu bar) which makes it easier for users to discover when a browser update is available.

  • Updated Collected Cookies dialog to improve performance. The Collected Cookies dialog is rewritten to improve page responsiveness. Customer-facing functionality and UX from previous releases remain the same.

  • Reset Microsoft Edge enterprise sync. For users having problems syncing browsing data across other signed-in devices, they can reset sync data from the Microsoft servers via Edge Settings edge://settings/profiles/sync/reset. This option should only be used if the sync data is available on one of the user's devices or if they want to delete all sync data from the servers.

    Note

    In Microsoft Edge 139, reset sync is enabled for users encountering a "No permissions" MIP error and in Microsoft Edge 140, reset sync is enabled for users encountering a "Service disabled" MIP error.

  • Update to Microsoft AutoUpdate policy. The MAUEnabled policy allowed admins to continue using Microsoft AutoUpdate on macOS. Since Microsoft Edge now uses EdgeUpdate, the MAUEnabled policy is obsoleted in Microsoft Edge version 140.

  • Create AI generated videos with Bing. Bing Video Creator empowers users to generate AI-driven videos using text prompts, using Sora technology to bring ideas to life with ease and creativity. Available exclusively to personal Microsoft Account holders, it offers both free and fast creation modes—enhanced by Microsoft Rewards points—for producing high-quality, short-form videos directly within Bing.   • Boost productivity and learning. With AI-driven recognition, Bing Visual Search, Edge users can get access to contextual insights and actionable information without leaving the browsing flow. You can access Visual Search by right clicking on images and selecting "Visual Search" from the drop-down menu.

  • Auto-discarding Sleeping Tabs. Tabs that have been sleeping for a long time will be discarded to save memory. When a user navigates back to a discarded tab, the tab needs to be reloaded. This can be managed through the AutoDiscardSleepingTabsEnabled policy. This policy is enabled if the SleepingTabsEnabled policy is enabled.

  • Reduce IP Address Change Notification policy updates. The ReduceIPAddressChangeNotificationEnabled policy allows admins to control the reduced IP address change notification behavior in Microsoft Edge on macOS. For issues related to connectivity with VPN connections and proxy server usage, disabling this policy setting may help to address them.

  • Changes to Wallet in Microsoft Edge. Wallet is being phased out to support a streamlined experience within Microsoft Edge. This affects the Wallet feature in Settings and the Mini Wallet found by clicking the profile icon in the top banner. For more information, see Changes to Wallet in Microsoft Edge.

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat Summarization in Microsoft Edge Context Menu. Microsoft Edge now includes a Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat summarization menu item to the context menu. This feature helps users quickly unpack and ask questions about their open page.

Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where MIP-protected PDF files from different sovereign cloud environments (including GCCH) failed to open and instead displayed the error message: “Need permissions. Contact the owner of the file to give you permissions.”

  • Fixed an issue, which affected IE mode, including errors when displaying PDF files, running Java applets, and showing the Information Bar in IE mode.

Improved reliability

  • Fixed a browser crash that occurred on first launch when the BrowserSignin policy was enabled and configured to "Force (2) = Force users to sign-in to use the browser (all profiles)."

  • Changes to Wallet in Microsoft Edge. Wallet is being phased out to support a streamlined experience within Microsoft Edge. This affects the Wallet feature in Settings and the Mini Wallet found by clicking the profile icon in the top banner. Users are directed to the new Passwords, Payment, and Personal Information management experience in Settings. Also, a new Password management experience is available in Settings.   • Introducing a new policy that can enable/disable Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat in Edge for Business from showing in the toolbar. Edge for Business now has a dedicated policy, Microsoft365CopilotChatIconEnabled, to enable and disable Copilot in Edge from showing in the Edge toolbar. When both this policy and HubsSidebarEnabled are configured, this policy takes precedence in determining whether Copilot appears in the toolbar. If this policy isn't configured and HubsSidebarEnabled is disabled, Copilot will remain hidden. In a future release, this policy is the sole control for managing Copilot's visibility in the toolbar.

  • Real-time notifications for compromised passwords. Microsoft Edge is integrating an in-context password breach notification system. This feature proactively informs users if their saved login credentials have been compromised in known data breaches, enabling them to take immediate action to secure their accounts. Admins can control availability to this feature using the PasswordMonitorAllowed policy.

  • Edge Settings Improvements. Edge Settings is migrating to WebUI2 to boost page responsiveness and introducing a series of minor visual and content upgrades to improve overall usability and utility. This includes optimizing for concise wording of individual settings, simplifying the number of pages and reorganizing content, and creating a cohesive user interface.

  • New Autofill Personal Information Settings Configuration. A web form field collection consent toggle will be available in Autofill settings (edge://settings/autofill/personalInfo). This allows users to consent to Microsoft Edge collecting web form field labels (e.g., "First Name," "Email") to improve Autofill suggestion accuracy. Only field labels are collected and not user-entered data. The web field labels are stored securely per Microsoft's privacy standards.

    This new setting is manageable via existing policies in Autofill (for example, AutofillAddressEnabled), EdgeAutofillMlEnabled. AutofillAddressEnabledis the parent setting forEdgeAutofillMlEnabled. The EdgeAutofillMlEnabled policy is the parent of this new setting, thus turning off the EdgeAutofillMlEnabled policy turns off this setting.

  • Web AI APIs for prompt and writing assistance. Microsoft Edge now implements the Writing Assistance APIs and the Prompt API (for Edge extensions) with a local language model, Phi-4-mini, that is built into the browser. These easy-to-use JavaScript APIs are made available via Edge flags (set to Enabled, by default only for the Summarizer and Prompt API for extensions) so that sites and extensions can apply AI capabilities on the web. The small language model is downloaded as the first time any of these APIs is used and later shared across all domains, serving local AI use-cases with reduced cost, network independence, and increased privacy (since data input to the model doesn't leave the user’s device). Admins can control the availability of these APIs via the GenAILocalFoundationalModelSettings policy. These APIs are currently not implemented in China.   • Enhancements to Performance and Secure network. Browser essentials is now separated into two distinct experiences (Performance and Secure Network) - both available from the Settings and more menu (“…” on the menu bar).

  • Reset Microsoft Edge enterprise sync. For users having problems syncing browsing data across other signed-in devices, they can reset sync data from the Microsoft servers via Edge Settings edge://settings/profiles/sync/reset. This option should only be used if the sync data is available on one of the user's devices or if they want to delete all sync data from the servers.
