If you are running, developing, or are planning to start development on Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3, you can soon use the latest Visual Studio (VS) IDE to develop for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3.
By moving your Microsoft Dynamics AX development environment to VS 2013, you will no longer need to maintain old versions of Visual Studio, thus saving time and resources.
This notification is for Microsoft Dynamics channel partners and customers who are running or developing on Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 only.*
The upgraded Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 development tools are slated to be released as a part of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 Cumulative Update 8 (CU8), which is currently scheduled to be generally available in November of calendar year 2014. These tools will provide developers with the familiar and enhanced Microsoft Dynamics AX modeling experience within VS 2013. If you already know how to model Reports and Enterprise Portal components using the Microsoft Dynamics AX development tools on VS 2010, no new training is required, the Microsoft Dynamics AX development experience will stay the same.
We recommend you upgrade to CU8 and Visual Studio 2013. To help you make a decision, consider the following:
Visual Studio 2013
In order to install the new Microsoft Dynamics AX development tools, you will need VS 2013 licenses. Visual Studio 2013 Professional is the minimum SKU we support.
If you already have Visual Studio 2013 Professional (or better), you do not need to buy (or upgrade to) a new license. For more information on how to buy, please click here.
You will also need to install Report Viewer 2012.
Visual Studio 2010
Microsoft will not support development on VS 2010 for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 CU8 and later releases.
Mainstream support for Visual Studio 2010 will be ending on July 15th, 2015
Side-by-Side
You will not be able to install Microsoft Dynamics AX development tools for VS 2010 side-by-side with the Microsoft Dynamics AX development tools on VS 2013 on the same machine. You will need to uninstall the VS 2010 version of the development tools in order to install the new VS 2013 version.
If you are running on earlier versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, Microsoft Dynamics AX development tools are still available and supported, but only on VS 2010. Microsoft Dynamics AX development tools for VS 2013 will only be available for users of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3.
