ESG data model

Microsoft Cloud for Sustainability Tech Summit November 2024.

Build a comprehensive environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data estate using this extensible analytical data model that enables you to effectively manage and process data for advanced analytics and reporting. The model includes over 400 tables under the following areas to support next-level business analytics and sustainability insights:

  • Carbon
  • Energy
  • Water
  • Waste
  • Biodiversity
  • Social
  • Governance

This data model also helps you to track your organization's key goals and metrics associated with different sustainability regulatory reporting directives and standards. As an IT administrator or data engineer, you can pick and choose tables from the model based on your sustainability use cases. Then you can transform your source ESG data from disparate source systems into the tables to establish a standardized ESG data estate.

Data model resources

The following resources can help you with data model exploration and understanding. You can get the data dictionary and PDF files in Sustainability data solutions in Microsoft Fabric and the sustainability data model template on Azure Synapse.

  • Data dictionary Excel file: Contains data definitions and examples for all the tables and columns to help you understand how you can use each table for your sustainability use cases.

  • Data model PDF files: These PDFs contain a subset of tables across each business area to help you understand how you can combine the tables to address your regulatory reporting needs across carbon emissions, water, waste, social, and governance areas.

  • Synapse database template: A database template built for our data model on Azure Synapse that can help you explore and visualize all the tables and relationships in the model.

To access the Synapse database template, follow these steps:

  1. In the Azure portal, go to Azure Synapse Analytics, and then go to Synapse Studio.

  2. On the Gallery page, select the Sustainability tile, and then select Continue.

  3. If prompted, select OK on the Azure Synapse Database Template Terms of Use popup.

  4. Search for the tables and select them to visualize and explore. You can also select entire business area tables by filtering tables.

  5. Select Back to stop exploring the model.
