Purchase an Azure Application in the Azure portal

This article explains the different options and requirements for searching, trying, and buying an Azure Application product from the Marketplace experience of the Microsoft Azure portal.

Requirements

  • An Azure user account with access to an appropriate Azure subscription. This subscription will be used for billing and for compartmentalization of your purchased Azure Application. If you don't have an Azure subscription, create a free account before you begin. To learn more about Azure subscriptions, see Create an additional Azure subscription.
  • Permission to purchase from Azure Marketplace.

Types of plans

There are two kinds of Azure application plans: solution template and managed application. Both plan types support automating the deployment and configuration of a solution beyond a single virtual machine (VM). This automates the process of acquiring multiple resources, including VMs, networking, and storage resources to provide complex solutions, such as internet as a service (IaaS) solutions. Both plan types can employ many different kinds of Azure resources, including but not limited to VMs.

  • Solution template plans are one of the main ways that partners publish a solution in the commercial marketplace. Paid VM offers that are deployed by a solution template are billed through another plan. For more information about solution templates, see What is Azure Resource Manager?
  • Managed application plans enable you to buy an Azure based solution via Marketplace. They have the same capabilities as solution template plans, with some key differences:
    • The resources are deployed to an Azure resource group that can be managed by the publisher of the app or by yourself. When managed by the publisher, the resource group is present in the consumer's subscription, but an identity in the publisher's tenant has access to manage the resource group.
    • A publisher specifies the monthly and metered billing pricing of the solution and transaction billing is supported through the commercial marketplace. For more information about managed applications, see Managed Application Overview
