Use Update Repair to identify and remediate Microsoft 365 Apps update issues

Update Repair in the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center helps you find Windows devices with Microsoft 365 Apps that are out of date or reporting update problems. Review each device's status and use the Repair action for eligible devices, or follow the recommended manual steps for devices that need attention.

Note

Update Repair is currently available as a preview. Some devices may require manual remediation and cannot be repaired from the admin center.

How Update Repair works

Update Repair uses device data reported to Inventory, including the installed Microsoft 365 Apps version and build, the target version policy, and Click-to-Run error information. It compares the installed version with the latest version available for the device's configured update channel and assigns a status.

The report shows devices in the Needs repair and Needs attention states. Devices that are Up to date or Outdated aren't shown because they don't currently require remediation.

Status What it means
Up to date The device is on the latest available version for its update channel.
Outdated The device is one or two versions behind and has no reported error.
Needs repair The device is at least one version behind and has an error that doesn't require separate remediation, or it's at least three versions behind and has no reported error.
Needs attention The device has an error that requires separate remediation, or it otherwise qualifies for repair but is running a Microsoft 365 Apps build earlier than 16.0.20326.20000. These devices aren't eligible for the Repair action.

Prerequisites

  • The device runs Windows and has Microsoft 365 Apps installed.
  • The device appears in Inventory and reports current data.
  • To be eligible for the Repair action, the device must run Microsoft 365 Apps build 16.0.20326.20000 or later.

If eligible devices need repair or attention, a notification banner appears on the Home and Inventory pages. Select Review devices in the banner to open Update Repair and see device details and recommended actions.

Review devices that need attention

Devices in the Needs attention state can't be repaired by the Repair action. Select a device name to open its details pane and review the installed version and build, update status, and reported error information. Remediate the underlying issue before retrying the update.

If the device is running a build earlier than 16.0.20326.20000, use Click-to-Run Online Repair to update the installation and restore it to a supported state:

  1. Open Installed apps (or Add or remove programs) in Windows.
  2. Locate Microsoft 365 Apps and select Modify or Change.
  3. Select Online Repair, then Repair, and follow the prompts.

Alternatively, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeClickToRun.exe" scenario=Repair platform=x64 RepairType=FullRepair forceappshutdown=True DisplayLevel=True

The command specifies the x64 platform. Verify that this matches the Microsoft 365 Apps installation on the device before running it.

Click-to-Run errors that require manual remediation

Devices that are three or more versions behind and report one of the following errors appear as Needs attention. Review the error category, resolve the issue, and then try the update again.

Permissions 5, 181 Ensure the device has the permissions required to modify files and registry settings.

Repair eligible devices

Use the Repair action for devices in the Needs repair state:

  1. In the Update Repair table, select one or more devices.
  2. Select Repair and confirm the action.
  3. Allow time for each device to check in with Inventory and receive the action.

The action triggers Click-to-Run Online Repair. It closes any open Microsoft 365 Apps, then reinstalls Microsoft 365 Apps by downloading the latest available build for the device's configured update channel from the Microsoft Content Delivery Network (CDN).

Warning

Repair interrupts users and closes open Microsoft 365 Apps. Notify affected users before you start. Ask them to save their work and close their Office apps, and leave their devices powered on, signed in, and connected so the action can be received.

The action doesn't start immediately. During preview, devices check in with Inventory every 12 hours when they aren't managed by Cloud Update, or every 2 hours when they are managed by Cloud Update. A device receives the action at its next check-in.
