Microsoft Trademarks and Branding Guidelines
All applications must adhere to the Microsoft Trademarks and Branding Guidelines.
Microsoft Trademarks
- Microsoft Office logos. The following Microsoft Office logo may be used in promotional materials and within the Application user interface as described below:
The color logo above is the primary version and is on the preferred light or white background.
You will use the Office trademark asset toolkit for all assets. Always download assets from https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/fluentui#/styles/web/icons to confirm you are using the correct app icon asset..
Microsoft Office logo
The Microsoft Office logo above should be used under the following circumstances: When the functionality of the Office applications is grouped together and need to be represented by one logo and/or using the Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint application icons is not possible.
Microsoft application Icons- general guidance
The Microsoft Office, Word, PowerPoint and Excel application icons should only be used functionally – to access these respective apps. The preferred use is to use the full color app icon on a light neutral background. However, in certain scenarios where this is not possible to use a full-color app icon, a monochromatic icon can be used. Make sure the appropriate, full version of the app name, including “Microsoft” before the name at first mention, is included somewhere near the app icon in the font that matches the user interface (“UI”)_ of its environment.
Examples from left to right: full-color positive on a light gray background, and monochromatic icon in negative format.
Office icon use
For the Office icon specifically, it should only be used:
• When an icon is required to open, link to, or launch the Office app for iOS and Android or an experience representing multiple Office apps
• When an icon is needed to represent the Office app or group of Office apps in a context where icons or logos are being used and Office would be the only one without iconic representation. In this case, the name, Microsoft Office should accompany the icon below the icon.
• In a functional diagram
Give the symbol a minimum clear space equal to the widest part of the Office icon itself (shown to the right in the dashed boxes as “x”). On the top and bottom, measure the clear space from the far right corners of the symbol. The resulting total clear space creates a perfect square. Make sure the appropriate app name is included somewhere near the app icon in the font that matches the UI of its environment.
Microsoft product name guidance
Please use the following product naming conventions:
● Microsoft Office for the web (formerly Office for the web)
● Microsoft 365 applications for iOS (formerly Office for iOS)
● Microsoft 365 applications for Android (formerly Office for Android)
● Microsoft Office for iOS and Android
● Microsoft Word
● Microsoft Excel
● Microsoft PowerPoint
Office product names should no longer include the platform (e.g. “Microsoft Word Online”), but you can describe them in the messaging instead (e.g., “Microsoft Word for the web”). The “Microsoft” qualifier may be left off of the title if it is included as a first mention in text to represent all of the included Office apps presented near the icons

- As logos – defined as the icon with the name locked up horizontally in the same color or the name or icon used in a branded or decorative position like a corner.
- In a sentence
- In any way that is not covered in this document
Segoe font
The Segoe font is a proprietary font of Microsoft. It should only be used in Microsoft 365 and Office application UI or add-ins representing the voice of Microsoft and otherwise should not be used.
General Branding Guidelines
You can only use the Microsoft Trademarks in accordance with these Branding Guidelines and any more detailed brand use specifications that may be provided by Microsoft. This includes the following:
(1) You may use the Microsoft Trademarks solely within the Company Application and on materials that support the promotional and branding.
(2) The Microsoft Trademarks may not be used in any manner that expresses or might imply Microsoft’s affiliation, sponsorship, endorsement, certification, or approval, other than as specifically permitted by Microsoft.
(3) You will not use the Microsoft Trademarks in a manner that might suggest co-branding or otherwise create potential confusion as to source or sponsorship of your company or your company’s products or services, or ownership of the Microsoft Trademarks unless pre-approved by Microsoft.
(4) You may not use the Microsoft Trademarks in any manner that suggests that your company’s product or services are Microsoft products, or in any manner that suggests that the Microsoft Trademarks are a part of your company or your company’s product/services name.
(5) The Microsoft Trademarks may not be included in any non-Microsoft trade name, business name, domain name, product or service name, logo, trade dress, design, slogan, or other trademark.
(6) You may use the Microsoft Trademarks only as provided by Microsoft. Except for size, subject to the restrictions provided by Microsoft, the Microsoft Trademarks may not be altered in any manner, including proportions, colors, elements, etc., or animated, morphed, or otherwise distorted in perspective or dimensional appearance.
(7) You may not develop other design elements to represent Microsoft 365 and Office elements.
(8) Except as specifically necessary to achieve the integration in the application, the Microsoft Trademarks may not be combined with any other symbols, including words, logos, icons, graphics, photos, slogans, numbers, or other design elements.
(9) The Microsoft Trademarks must stand alone. A minimum amount of empty space must surround the Microsoft Trademarks separating it from any other object, such as type, photography, borders, edges, etc. When using the “Microsoft Office” logo, use a minimum clear space surrounding the logo equivalent to the height of the Microsoft symbol. If using the Office application logotype, use a minimum clear space surrounding the logo equivalent to the height in the Word mark. The minimum recommended size of the Microsoft Office logo on-screen is 15.5 pixels tall or in print 0.22 inches (5.5 mm) tall. Otherwise, the required area of empty space around any other Microsoft Trademarks must be X, where X equals ½ the height of the Microsoft Trademark.
(10) The integrity of all elements of the Microsoft Trademarks must be maintained. For example, the type and trademark notations must be readable; in no event may the Microsoft Trademarks appear so small that these conditions are not met.
(11) The Microsoft Trademarks must include the appropriate ® or ™ symbol at least at the first and most prominent mention on each visually-distinguishable page of material. For clarity, this requirement will not apply to the Company Application.
(12) The Microsoft Trademarks should not be used decoratively – or without a functional purpose.
(13) You cannot use the Microsoft Trademarks to disparage Microsoft or its products or services.
