Compare Microsoft 365 Data Residency offerings

Microsoft offers five Data Residency solutions for Microsoft 365 customers. Two are included for eligible Tenants at no additional cost, while three are paid add-on services for organizations with expanded or complex requirements. This article compares all five offerings to help you determine which solution best meets your organization's requirements.

For definitions of italicized terms, see Key terms and definitions.

Included commitments for eligible tenants

These commitments are included for Tenants that meet specific eligibility criteria. No additional purchase is required. Select commercial Tenants can configure whether their in-country Product Terms commitment is active.

These services require separate licensing and provide additional capabilities beyond the included commitments.

  • Advanced Data Residency (ADR): A paid add-on that expands service coverage and provides data migration services for Local Region Geographies.
  • Advanced Data Residency for Education (ADR-E): A paid add-on for eligible Education customers that provides Data Residency and migration services for core workloads in Local Region Geographies.
  • Multi-Geo Capabilities: A paid add-on that enables organizations to store Customer Data across multiple Geographies within a single Tenant.

How Customer Data can move between Geographies

Once a Microsoft 365 service provisions a Tenant into a particular Geography, your Customer Data can move to another Geography in three ways. Understanding these methods helps you select the offering that aligns with your data movement requirements.

Method Trigger What happens
ADR migration Tenant has a Default Geography that is also a Local Region Geography and subscribes to Advanced Data Residency Customer Data for Microsoft 365 Core Services and Microsoft 365 Expanded Services migrates from its Current Geography to the Local Region Geography corresponding to the Tenant's Default Geography.
Multi-Geo assignment Tenant subscribes to Multi-Geo Capabilities The Global Administrator can assign each user's Customer Data for Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft 365 Copilot to Satellite Geographies.
Microsoft-managed (no commitment) Tenant doesn't have a Durable Commitment on Data Location Customer Data isn't committed to reside in any particular datacenter. Microsoft stores data in a location that enables effective service delivery, and that location is subject to change without notice.
