Feature updates

Excel

  • Add table data from an image with Data from Picture: Transcribing data from paper into Excel can be a slow and frustrating process. Wouldn’t it be easier just to take a picture of the information and import it into your worksheet? Now you can, with the Data from Picture feature! To take advantage of this powerful feature, simply go to the Data tab and select From Picture, then choose the source; you can also review and correct the data, if necessary, before inserting it into your worksheet. • Optimizing loading fonts stored on the printer: This feature optimizes font-related operations by detecting whether the default printer supports fonts stored on the printer, and if it does not, skipping the step of reaching out to the printer to load them. Users can turn off this behavior by accessing File > Options > Advanced > Print and switching off "Include fonts that are stored on the printer".

Office Suite

  • Ability to insert live camera feed in all slides with one click: Now, one can insert a PowerPoint Cameo in all slides using the Insert > Cameo > All Slides command on the PowerPoint ribbon. Access

  • Enable the ability to code sign your Microsoft Access database and VBA code: This update enables the Tools/Digital Signature command within the VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) IDE (Integrated Development Environment) for current Microsoft Access database formats. Signing a database allows VBA code in the database to be run even if Trust Center settings specify that only digitally signed code should be enabled.

Excel

  • Touch Improvements to Ribbon: We’ve improved the spacing of buttons in the Ribbon when the device is being used in Tablet posture.

  • Protect your PDFs: Sensitivity labels are now available to protect your PDFs from unauthorized access. Applies to files created in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. See details in blog post

  • Supercharge your worksheets with fourteen new text and array functions: Use fourteen powerful new functions to easily split your text and rearrange your data. Try using TEXTSPLIT to split your text or VSTACK to combine multiple arrays. See details in blog post

  • Improvements to Power BI Request Access: We’ve upgraded the experience for users who create PivotTables connected to Power BI datasets. Prior to the improved experience, when a user tried to refresh a PivotTable connected to a dataset that they do not have access to, they would see a generic error message. Now, a specific error dialog appears that informs the user that they do not have access to the dataset and allows them to click a link to request access from the owner. Once access is granted, the user can go back to the PivotTable and refresh to continue their analysis. See details in blog post

  • Reducing unwanted fragmenting of conditional formatting rules: Check out the improved performance and faster calculations when applying conditional formatting rules to cells. We've done so by reducing fragmentation of data when pasting copied cells into that a cell range.

  • Speed-up filtering when workbook contains lots of conditional formatting rules: When your workbook contains lots of conditional formatting rules, it can slow down applying a filter such as a color filter. No longer! By optimizing the underlying data structure we’ve sped up filtering.

  • Speeding up Formula Entry: Excel sped up entering a formula in a cell noticeably by reducing memory usage, making more efficient use of allocated memory, and optimizing redrawing. These optimizations are more noticeable on devices with slower Memory or slower CPU-Memory throughput and for larger cell ranges.

  • Copy Paste is more efficient: Copy/paste now uses an index-based search, rather than a linear scan, for more optimal merging. The optimizations are especially noticeable on low-end devices with constrained hardware.

  • PivotTable overlap improvements: We have improved the experience when PivotTables overlap other content in your workbook.

  • Enjoy an improved scrolling experience: Scrolling through your sheet just got smoother when navigating large or wide cells. Learn more

Resolved issues

Excel

  • We fixed an issue where a small amount of random formulas were stuck in a state where they were not recalculated as they should be.

  • The old version of the custom autofilter dialog in Excel was not using the Windows settings for decimal separators and other custom number format options, but was instead using the defaults for the system region, even if the user overrode those defaults in Windows with their own options. This means that, for example, for a user using the Germany locale who then set their decimal separator in Windows to a dot (.), overriding the default of a comma (,), Excel would still think the normal decimal separator was a comma and that a number with a dot in the middle would correspond to a date, and the autofilter would assume a number like 1.23 was a date (January 1, 2023) and filter according to the numerical value of that date.

The new version of the custom autofilter dialog does not have these issues, and this fix activates the new version of the dialog so that it uses the correct decimal and digit grouping symbols from Windows when parsing numbers.

Project

  • We fixed an issue where Project was unable to connect to Project Server when forms-based authentication was used.
