The media type of the message MIME entity is the value of the last Content-Type header field, as specified in [RFC2045] section 5. If the message MIME entity's media type is "application/pkcs7-mime" or "application/x-pkcs7-mime", the message SHOULD be treated as an opaque-signed message or an encrypted message. Also, if the message MIME entity's media type is "application/octet-stream", and a file extension specified by the name parameter of a Content-Type header field or the filename parameter of a Content-Disposition header field, as specified in [RFC2183], ends with ".p7m" (case-insensitive), the message SHOULD be treated as an opaque-signed message or an encrypted message. Additional verification steps can be performed. For example, a client or server could choose to verify that MIME body content has valid syntax, as specified in [RFC5751].
