3.1.2.1 Safe Period Timer

The Safe Period timer is a configurable timer that is used to automatically transition from the COMMUNICATION-INTERRUPTED to PARTNER-DOWN state. If configured, this timer is initialized when a new failover relationship is created or when the Safe Period timer is enabled for an existing failover relationship by using the R_DhcpV4FailoverCreateRelationship method ([MS-DHCPM] section 3.2.4.90) and the R_DhcpV4FailoverSetRelationship method ([MS-DHCPM] section 3.2.4.91). This timer is reset whenever the failover relationship transitions to COMMUNICATION-INTERRUPTED as specified in the failover state diagram in section 3.1.1. This is a one-time timer with a default value of 60 minutes<3>; that is, unless the timer is stopped, it will expire once at the end of the specified timer interval. This timer value SHOULD be set appropriately, factoring in the time required for administrator intervention. This timer SHOULD be stopped when the communication has been restored between the failover partners or when the administrator has manually set the failover relationship state to the PARTNER-DOWN state by calling the R_DhcpV4FailoverSetRelationship method ([MS-DHCPM] section 3.2.4.91).
