2.2 Message Syntax

The following DHCP Failover extensions use the message format for options, as specified in [IETF-DHCPFOP-12] section 6.2.

All option fields and values described in this document are sent in network byte order unless indicated otherwise.

Messages between the failover partners SHOULD be authenticated through the use of a shared secret. If the message-digest is configured to be authenticated, it MUST be included in every message and SHOULD<2> be calculated based on HMAC [RFC2104] in combination with the SHA-256 interactive cryptographic hash function.
