Power BI introduces enhanced cataloging and governance capabilities by integrating with Azure Purview.
Feature details
By integrating with Azure Purview, the following enhanced cataloging and governance capabilities will be available in Power BI:
- Full and incremental scan of your organizations' Power BI assets and metadata into the catalog
- Ability to view end-to-end data journeys and lineage, all the way from the original data stores (including SQL DB, ADLS, and more) and down to your Power BI reports and dashboards
- Advanced search of Power BI assets by various metadata properties such as glossary terms and contacts, and the ability to view asset information and open assets for further exploration in the Power BI portal
- Ability to discover data sources in the catalog and open and connect to them in Power BI Desktop
- Ability to discover datasets and reports in the catalog and open them directly in the Power BI service for further exploration
- Viewing of endorsement and sensitivity labels for Power BI assets in the catalog
We have also invested in scanner APIs that will become generally available this year. These scanner APIs will make it possible for professionals and admins or partners to understand the relationships between artifacts and more easily manage Power BI projects in their organization. Such capabilities include the following:
Admin APIs to efficiently scan Power BI artifact metadata and lineage
A new set of APIs enable partners and Power BI admins to scan and retrieve information and lineage for all Power BI artifacts in the organization. The APIs support the use case of a large tenant with many artifacts and workspaces. With the metadata returned from the APIs, any customer or third-party tool can generate a catalog of Power BI artifacts with rich metadata and lineage cross tenant from the data source to the dataflow and dataset, then to the report and dashboard. Metadata returned includes some properties that were not accessible with the existing APIs, for example: description, sensitivity label-id, and endorsement label.
To make it more scalable and efficient, we also provide an API that returns the list of workspaces that were changed since the last API call. With this API, customers can do incremental scans and save time and COGS for Premium workspaces.
Service principal authentication for Power BI read-only Admin APIs
This enhancement allows the performance of read operations using Power BI admin APIs without the need for a user to sign in. Service principal can replace master user and help customers build a more robust and secure solution when going to production.
