Business value

Operational reporting remains a key part of any organization's business intelligence strategy. For many years, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) has met that need for organizations worldwide, but as more customers transition to the Power BI cloud service, paginated reports in Power BI are meeting those needs.

Power BI is evolving the ability to author these reports from locally installed, IT-centric tooling to a modern web-based offering. Now, you can take advantage of the unique capabilities of paginated reports by authoring them in the Power BI service. Whether you're a casual user of Power BI or have used SSRS in the past, these new capabilities set the standard and provide a simple yet powerful way to author paginated reports moving forward.

Feature details

The initial experience of web authoring for paginated reports addresses a top customer request: to be able to create formatted tables based on Power BI datasets while creating a paginated report behind the scenes.

Planned feature highlights include:

  • Selecting fields from a Power BI dataset using the familiar Power BI service interface.
  • Choosing a style to apply to your formatted table.
  • Exporting to Excel, PDF, PPTX, and other supported formats.
  • Saving and subscribing to the report on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.
  • Saving and opening in Report Builder for advanced editing scenarios.
  • Viewing Data Preview in Dataset Details.

Preview underlying data in a dataset, select tables and columns from the dataset and export or customize data to create a new table. In tables view, you can create table previews by selecting desired columns.

The Show query feature allows you to copy to the clipboard the DAX query used to create the table preview. This feature is useful if you want to reuse the DAX query for future actions.

Column resizing allows you to resize the width of the columns through a drag handle. This functionality makes the table preview more readable, especially for long column input values.
