Migrate your HPC Pack 2016

HPC Pack 2016 will be retired on January 12, 2027. You must opt in to stop the Azure deployment and create new ones with HPC Pack 2019 after the retirement date.

Feature end of support

HPC Pack 2016 follows the Fixed Lifecycle Policy and will reach the end of support. On January 12, 2027, we’ll retire HPC Pack 2016. The existing experience that HPC Pack 2016 offers will no longer be supported starting 12 January 2027. Microsoft will stop providing updates and supports for HPC Pack 2016 after the date, but you can continue to use it if you want.

Alternative: Use HPC Pack 2019

The alternative to using HPC Pack 2016 requires using HPC Pack 2019. HPC Pack 2019 was released on June 10, 2020, under Modern Lifecycle Policy. This document lists the new features and updates that are available in Microsoft HPC Pack 2019.

Migrate your HPC Pack 2016 to HPC Pack 2019

When the HPC Pack 2016 retires on January 12, 2027, you may uninstall HPC Pack 2016 clusters with all existing jobs and nodes data purged. Learn how to migrate HPC Pack 2016 to HPC Pack 2019:

  1. Uninstall HPC Pack 2016

    Follow the steps in the link to remove HPC Pack by using Programs in Control Panel. Uninstalling the software will erase the current workload data. Customers could export the cluster configurations before proceeding with the uninstallation.

  2. Install HPC Pack 2019

    This guide for HPC Pack 2019 on-premises Getting started provides basic conceptual information and general procedures for installing an HPC cluster by using HPC Pack 2019. Customers may import the saved cluster configurations for the new 2019 installation.

  • Is there an in-place upgrade from HPC Pack 2016 to HPC Pack 2019?

    No, there is no in-place upgrade between two major versions of HPC Pack. To install the new version, you need to remove the old one. This will erase your previous jobs and nodes data. The new installation will have a new cluster. Customers should export these data with the built-in commands or APIs before proceeding with the uninstallation. For cluster configurations, there are PowerShell scripts available here to help export before uninstallation and import after the new installation.
