Quick-Start Guide and Checklist

The following quick-start guide provides an overview of the process for using BDD 2007 to create computer images. The Computer Imaging System feature team uses this guide to help identify the steps for which they need additional information and to skip the steps with which they are already familiar.

Table 1 and Table 2 are checklists of the high-level steps for the Planning and Development Phases, correspondingly.

	High-level steps in the Planning Phase
	Install Deployment Workbench. Most of the Computer Imaging System feature team’s work is in Deployment Workbench, part of BDD 2007. The Getting Started Guide describes the prerequisites and instructions for installing BDD 2007.
	Add sources to the distribution share. After installing BDD 2007, which creates a local distribution share, populate the distribution share with sources. Sources include the operating system, security updates, language packs, device driver, and other source files.
	Choose an image strategy. An important decision the Computer Imaging System feature team must make during the Planning Phase is what type of images to create. The team must choose between thick, thin, and hybrid image strategies.

	High-level steps in the Developing Phase
	Add applications to the distribution share. Many of the Computer Imaging System feature team’s customizations are applications the team adds to the distribution share. Using Deployment Workbench, the team can add applications, including hardware-specific applications, and specify dependencies between applications.
	Configure builds. Builds are operating system configurations that include an unattended setup answer file and a task sequence. Builds associate an operating system with a configuration, and the Computer Imaging System feature team uses Deployment Workbench to configure a build’s settings and task sequence.
	Configure deployment points. Deployment points contain a subset of the distribution share’s source files and builds and also specify how to install the builds they contain. Updating a deployment point generates the Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) images necessary to connect to the deployment point and begin installation.
	Capture operating system images. The process of capturing an image is a Lite Touch Installation (LTI) deployment that ends with the Windows Deployment Wizard capturing an image of the destination computer. The team specifies whether to prompt for image capturing when it creates a build in Deployment Workbench. Then, the Windows Deployment Wizard asks whether to capture an image of the destination computer during the initial interview.
