Provisioning Files

Microsoft® Windows® Mobile-based Smartphone and Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC have a provisioning structure, along with a unique new extension that allows for continuous provisioning. You can use continuous provisioning to update or remove configuration settings on Smartphone and Pocket PC. It modifies the device configuration settings when necessary and can be repeated on multiple occasions. Configuration Manager and the Configuration Service Providers process the configuration settings message.

The PROV DTD defined in the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Provisioning Content Specification, WAP-183-PROVCONT, Version 24-July-2001, was used as a guideline for Microsoft® Windows® Mobile-based Smartphone and Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC. This specification is located at https://www.wapforum.org/.

However, the Smartphone and Pocket PC provisioning document, MSPROV DTD, extends the WAP provisioning DTD (PROV DTD) to allow you to update or remove configuration settings. MSPROV DTD is backward compatible with PROV DTD. To enable continuous provisioning, MSPROV DTD introduces new attributes to the parm element defined in the WAP provisioning specification. It also provides additional "query" and "removes" functionality.

MSPROV DTD describes the Provisioning XML File, the document that is passed between the provisioning source and the device. Configuration Manager and the Configuration Service Providers process the configuration settings message.

This section describes how to extend WAP provisioning on your device by using the continuous provisioning message format. You will learn how to encode your configuration settings so that you can update or remove them. The following diagram illustrates the configuration setting message flow for Smartphone.
