Software applications that were originally written for the Pocket PC 2000 environment require some modification before they can run successfully in newer Pocket PC environments.
From a network connectivity standpoint, the most significant change in Windows Mobile 2002 software and later versions is the functionality added by the Connection Manager API, which eliminates the need to use the remote access API directly.
Applications written for earlier Windows Mobile versions should be modified to use the Connection Manager Helper.
Within the Connection Manager Helper, there is a placeholder function named DoConnected. To get or send data, it is recommended that you override the contents of this function with your own code. The purpose of this function is to signify the requested connection has been established and socket calls are now possible.
Connection Manager enables users to experience a seamless network connection process because they do not have to select a connection type. The network settings have already been set in one central location, and Connection Manager determines the most appropriate connection to make based on the preconfigured connection types.
For Windows Mobile 2002 software and later versions, the connection paradigm has changed from prompting users for connection information to a simpler principle: If Pocket Internet Explorer can establish a connection to the Internet, any third-party application can also establish a connection, both simplifying and enhancing the customer experience.
