Glossary

The glossary explains the terminology that is used in the Microsoft® MapPoint® Location Server SDK.

active

An attribute of a contact relationship that means that a provisioned user is able to find the location of his or her contact
If a contact relationship is inactive, the provisioned users cannot locate each other.

accuracy

Accuracy of a location is expressed in terms of distance and can be defined as the radius of a circle within which a locatable end point (such as a provisioned phone) can be located.

contact

A provisioned user who belongs to the same enterprise as another user, and whose location the other user can potentially find. Provisioned users cannot find their contacts until the contacts grant them permission to do so.

culture

An attribute that defines the language for a Find Nearby category, based on user preference. A culture can be either neutral or specific. For example, the culture for U.S. English is "en-US", while the neutral culture for English is “en.”

Culture in MapPoint Location Server follows the Request for Comment (RFC) 1766 standard in the format "languagecode2-regioncode2", where languagecode2 is a lowercase two-letter code derived from International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 639-1 and regioncode2 is an uppercase two-letter code derived from ISO 3166. The format for a culture is "languagecode2".

locatable contact

A provisioned user who can be contacted by another provisioned user using the notification end point of the user with the help of a notification service provider.

locatable phone number

The phone number of a provisions user that is registered with MapPoint Location Server. Location service providers use this number to locate the user's geographic location. This is also known as a locatable end point.

locatable user

A provisioned user who can be located by his or her locatable phone number with the help of a location service provider.

location service provider

A mobile operator (company) that provides services such as identifying the geographical location of a user through his or her mobile phone number.

Find Nearby category

A group of points of interest that are of the same type, such banks or restaurants. You can use the MapPoint Web Service Find service to find members of a particular Find Nearby category within a specified proximity and render them on a map

notification

A Short Message Service (SMS) or e-mail message that informs a provisioned user that another user (a contact) has located him or her.

notification end point

The phone number or e-mail address of a provisioned user that is registered with MapPoint Location Server. This phone number or e-mail address is used by notification service providers as the address to which notifications are sent.

notification service provider

A mobile operator (company) that provides services such as sending SMS and e-mail messages to users on their mobile devices.

notify on contact

A notification that informs a user that he or she was added to another user's contact list.

notify on locate

A notification that informs a user that a contact has tried to locate him or her.

provisioning

The process of registering an enterprise user with MapPoint Location Server.
A user who is registered with MapPoint Location Server is also known as a provisioned user."

visible

An attribute that defined whether a provisioned user can be located by his or her contacts.
If the status of a user is visible, contacts can locate him or her if the contact relationship is active.
If the status of a user is invisible, the user cannot be located even if the contact relationship is active.
